The article entitled “He’s Guilty: Investigator Bias in Judgments of Truth and Deception” by Christian Meissner and Saul Kassin’s aims at establishing the effect of “investigator bias” in influencing investigation outcomes. The research question posed by the article is “do cognitive and behavioral biases ascertain investigator’s performance in making judgments of truth and Deception?” The article adopts unique methodology through incorporating forty-four participants from North American law enforcement (Meissner & Kassin, 2002). It also incorporates the discussions covering research from related articles, review of the literature and resource ...

The deliberate hostile activity to cause physical harm or mass killing of a targeted population in places like schools, workplaces, places of worship, public gathering is a Hybrid Targeted Violence (HTV). The places of gathering where people have least option to shield themselves are the preferred locations for an HTV action. The weapons used in this kind of violence may be the conventional firearms or other explosive devices. These incidents of atrocity have multi-threat, and often go against the conventional procedural strategies of the relevant agencies of public safety to initiate a rescue or counter the violence. The $9.9 million reduction in budget allocation makes one of the things that caught me by surprise. A closer analysis of the budget reveals that security/counter-terrorism grants have reduced dramatically from the 2013 values. The other most surprising thing is that the budget for communication was also reduced in 2014. Common knowledge would suggest an increased funding in communications and counter-terrorism programs. The capital program also surprised me since the department seems to have an elaborate ten-year plan that underfunded. Further, I was surprised to note that administration of the police department increased in budget allocation. The budget shows a ...
During holocaust, many innocent people were killed. These killings were done by people who were under the instruction of the government. It is due to these killings that Stanly Milgram decided to conduct experiments known as obedience to the authority to find out it was possible to conduct such massive killing of the ordinary people in the society. The finding from these experiments is very useful in explaining the reason for the massive killings.
Obedience is a common thing especially in society where we have very powerful leaders. When people are very powerful, the others tend to obey their commands ...

According to Karen (2013), Police Officers normally train often with guns but less so for the circumstances they get themselves in most of the times. OC spray, teasers and batons are usually on the duty belt of the officer but these may not all the time be viable choices. Other times some good old fashioned hand-to-hand combative is inevitable. Hence, when that time approaches, it is vital to one to have acquired the skills that will finish any violence as fast as possible
There are several excellent hand-to-hand combative systems carried out, for example, Wing Chun Kung Fu ( ...
This article is about the artistic efflorescence in the Ottoman Empire. The Sultan’s court was considered a ‘court studio’, the center of art production. The Ottoman Emperors encouraged the architectures, calligraphers, goldsmiths and other related artists to work through rewarding them with gold and other precious items, in return. Road system was designed, and other architectural decisions were taken to improve the systems of the state.

In the article entitled Revisiting the Oil Curse, Samuel R. Schubert the author present facts regarding economic and political scenarios relating to oil, he essentially perceives these scenarios as an expression of the oil curse. The author in this article brings forth some of the initiative that have since been adopted by some governments. In Alaska for instance, citizens are compensated through shares ...

Immigration in the US has for long been a controversial debate, having both its pros and cons. On the one hand of attaining cheap and valued labour, it also poses an imminent threat to the Native Americans on the grounds of employment. One of the main reasons of the conflict also resides in the diversity of the ethnicities. Often there are clashes on the basis of colour, creed or any other discrimination the human conscience has crop up. Unsurprisingly, the US Government in various states is now coming up with stronger laws and stricter punishments to drive these illegal citizens ...
The article: Juvenile Drug Court Program Admission, Demeanor and Cherry-picking: A Research Note by J.C Barnes among other authors examines how demeanor of either a parent or a juvenile influences the admission of the juvenile into the Drug Court program for purposes of treatment. It does a critical analysis of 76 case files so as to get a picture of the case whether demeanor indeed influences the admission of juveniles into the program. The second concern of the article is to explore whether the source of such demeanor whether parent or the child is determinant of whether a juvenile is so admitted. The article ...
White collar crimes are financially motivated and non-violent crimes majorly committed by people of high social status. The term “white collar crime” was coined in 1939 by Edwin Sutherland in his speech to the American Sociological Society.White collar crimes are difficult to detect and prosecute. Punishment for these crimes involve: incarceration, restitution, community service, probation, criminal forfeiture, fines or disgorgement.

Youngstrom and Busch (2000) examine the ramifications of the Supreme Court decision in Kumho Tire Co. Ltd v. Carmichael on expert testimonies in court and then analyze the implications on psychologists deposing as experts. The authors note the recent Supreme Court decision that current legal standards for admission of scientific evidence also apply to other expert testimony based on ‘training, experience and other sources of expertise besides empirical support ‘ (Youngstrom & Busch, 2000). The authors trace the evolution of acceptance of expert opinion in court. Earlier, techniques generally accepted in the scientific community were acceptable. In Carmichael’s case, the ...

The paper delineates and evaluates Eric Garner and Michael Brown Cases as well as unwarranted and excessive use of force. Garner was killed due to selling untaxed cigarettes while Michael Brown was a suspected robber. In both cases, the targeted were unarmed, and I think a re-evaluation of the use by the police force. Two different viewpoints persist in each of the cases. In the Garner case, he had been unable to breathe and choked to death. I think that the officers had no right to punish him with death because a man drinking and driving has no intention to kill others, ...

This article talks about the relationships that exist between “dating activity, social competency, and type of information provided with the dependents variables of date rape related protection behavior (intent), belief, and knowledge” (Singh ...

According to research, racism is not a thing of the past, but is rampant even now, in today’s society. It is a widespread problem that seemingly stems from the belief that black or African-American males are more aggressive than their white counterparts. The article “Is everyone a little bit racist,” by Michael Kristoff, delves into the intricacies of racial biases by citing a few examples and outlining a few studies that were conducted into the issue. It shows empirical evidence by way of researches and tests that were done, by a wide cross-section that determined that racism is still alive and well.

Analysis of “On Terror,” by Philip E. Devine and Robert J. Rafalko
Introduction
There have been several views on terrorism. However, research on terrorism differs from the standard social science research. As one is dealing with underground organizations, often there is little or incomplete data. Terrorism is like a war in the shadows that creates massive publicity. For the majority of researchers, it can be dangerous to do investigative research in danger zones, and therefore, majority of the research is carried out on the basis of reports released by the government and media news stories. Research on terrorism has more often ...

Braga, A. A. (2001). The effects of hot spots policing on crime. The ANNALS of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, 578(1), 104-125.
The major concept involved in the study is directed patrolling for crime reduction. Directed patrolling is operationalized by increasing police patrolling in areas where crime rate is higher, otherwise known as hot spots or high crime zones. Thus, it analyzes the effects of hot spots policing on crime rate and crime displacement. That makes crime rate and crime displacement as the two dependent variables in the study for two questions while hot ...
On November, 6, 2014 “The New York Times” published an article with the title “Court Upholds Marriage Bans in Four States”. This article appeared in the electronic version of the newspaper and presented the news about the situation of banning the same-sex marriages in four states (Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee and Kentucky). The problem arose this summer, when federal judges have recognized the prohibition of same-sex marriages in a number of states as unconstitutional actions. Thereby, the cases were referred to the federal appeal court (United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit) that “upheld the right of four states ...

Article Review: “Prisons, Privatization, Patronage”
Summary: The article, “Prisons, Privatization, Patronage,” by Paul Krugman aimed to expose the indecency and lies growing within the prison system, beginning with halfway houses in New Jersey . Typically, halfway homes are advertised as a place for prisoners in rehabilitation to find sanctuary as they adjust to the outside world. They are shown as refuges that offer resources for individuals. The New York Times’ investigation however exposed halfway homes in New Jersey to be riddled with underpaid, overwhelmed staff, as well as dangerous inhabitants that did no service for one another. If anything, the ...

Typical Photo IDs might be a Texas Driver’s license or Concealed Carry Permit, a US Military ID or a US Passport. Before ...
“Living Dolls”: François Ier Dresses His Women
In the 16th century, fashion dolls were used as an international exchange of fashion trends. When François Ier asked Isabella d’Este to send him a doll dressed in her favorite fashions, he intended to copy them for his court and give it to the women in France. Fashion dolls practically played a role of the mannequins.
Whether given as a gift to a child or an adult, the fashion doll always performed the same educational function – the acquaintance with foreign dress styles. The appearance of the doll was not very ...
Victims and the Media/ Harold and Kumar/ Article Review
In today’s media crazed world, it can sometimes be difficult to identify the victim in a crisis. Through images on television, the internet, and even or cell phones, we are exposed to too many ideas that appeal to our inner ideals of who the victim may be. The greatest example, of course, is the September 11 attacks. The media scrutinized Muslims, Indians, and anybody else who fit the ideation of the terrorists who launched planes into the WTC towers. That was until the American public and many around the world were sure that the entire Middle Eastern population at ...

The passage from Murasaki Shikibu’s Diary, detailed in Haruo Shirane’s book Traditional Japanese Literature: An Anthology, is about her trials and tribulations as a court lady-in-waiting to the Empress Shoshi. In her diary, Lady Murasaki reflects on how her behaviour is governed by what others think of her, and her growing disenchantment with and detachment from the world around her. With vivid examples from her daily life, the lady talks about how others perceive her and vice versa, about her internal struggles and melancholy and about salvation. For instance, by quoting words of other ladies in court, she ...

Judicial independence has been argued to be an abstract that can never be achieved. Legal jurists claim that the judiciary can never be independent of control of the executive, or the legislature provided that the justices are appointed by the politicians. The view is held across the judicial and political spectrum. As a consequence, twenty-one states in the United States of America have opted to elected justices of the Supreme Court. The election of the justices of the Supreme Court is can be contracted to the appointive system where the judges were appointed by the governor in the individual states. ...
In the article, State Actors in an International Definition of Terrorism from a Human Rights Perspective, Bruce Broomhall suggests that the way terrorism is defined currently may be insufficient to fully encapsulate the intricate aspects of the activities that occur under the title of “terrorism.” The article highlights the principles of international humanitarian law as it pertains to terrorism on an international level, rather than domestic. According to Broomhall, terrorism consists of acts such as hostage taking, genocide, war crimes, and the indiscriminate targeting of civilian individuals in an attempt to make a large impact or bring attention to the cause ...

Joe Nocera argues in his New York Times op-ed column “Guns and Mental Illness” that it should be more difficult for people, rather than the mentally-ill, to attain a firearm due to a recent mass shooting in California. Last month, 22 year old Elliot Rodger went on a shooting spree in Isla Vista, California after emailing a 140-page manifesto to his parents. Nocera recapitulates the terrifying tale of two parents racing to California only to have their worst fears confirmed: Elliot had killed six people before committing suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Elliot had a long history with depression and had never been ...

According to Joan Scott, gender is defined as “a constitutive element of social relationships based on perceived differences between the sexes and a primary way of signifying relationships of power.” On the other hand, Goffman claims that, “If gender be defined as the culturally established correlates of sex (whether in consequence of biology or learning), then gender display refers to conventionalized portrayals of these correlates. “In Scott context, biology is excluded the explanation of gender and the perception of individuals put into consideration. One is perceived a woman when she tends to behave and speak in an ...

Tort Law Article Review
The article was written by Becca Aaronson and was published at the New York Times in January 2013. It was about the case of Connie Spears who later suffered from legs amputation after an initial alleged misdiagnosis of her medical condition at Christus Santa Rosa hospital. It aims to show how the Tort Law’s provision could affect an individual’s case proceedings right after it ...
Their intention was to depict the role played by personal morals and emotions in encouraging or discouraging the vice of illegal downloading. According to Wang et al (2011, p.155), the authors hypothesised that a downloader who has previously engaged in illegal downloading may experience anticipated guilt because of their undesirable behaviour, and therefore will be less likely to engage in the same in future, unlike those who have had no illegal downloading experience. However, if the act of illegal downloading results in a positive experience for the downloader, in future this positive experience will override the anticipated guilt and thus will ...
The concern for poverty is always present in every society. Since a few decades ago, it is studied that the rise of poverty rates, particularly in the United States of America, can be traced to the socioeconomic status of female-headed families with children. Results of studies show that the risk of poverty for female-headed households is higher compared to male-headed household. Thus, the matter concerning female-headed homes continues to become a major concern to policymakers (Gabe, 2011). There are various elements associated with this issue: inequality, discrimination, family structure, labor force participation, welfare programs and so on. This will be the ...
Martin Amis's Other People and London Fields
As Brian Finney points out in Narrative and Narrated Homicide in Martin Amis's Other People and London Fields although he is not classified as a crime writer Martin Amis’s stories are filled with crime and focus upon death and murder. . Finney’s critique of Amis’s stories revolves around the continuing themes of women, death, murder and victimization along with their relationship with the enigmatic narrator.
In his analysis Finney looks into the author and the zeitgeist of his era as well. He notes that Amis himself describes his work as “"playful literature" (Neustatter 71) and describes himself ...

The Coming Insurrection is a product of the failure of the earlier models. As depicted from the article, the earlier models offered a way of resolving the social conflict, experienced in the society, between the working class and the owners of the means of production. Like explained by Marx in his theory of Capitalism; the owners of production, who consist of the upper class in the social strata, use their economic power to oppress the working class. Consequently, the working class comes together and organizes strikes and other forms of resistance to the exploitation. Eventually, the strike becomes a ...

Arguably one of the most important documents in the entirety of the criminal justice system, the Presentencing Investigation Report (PSI) remains a vital source of information that guides judges who have to pass sentences. It has been in use since the 1920s. As a legal term, PSI report is a purposeful investigation into the history of a convict before a sentence is passed to establish if there are grounds that could extenuate, so that the judge has the discretion to vary the sentence.
The evolution of the PSI has led to the development of at least three approaches. These shall inform the ensuing discussion. ...
That there was genocide in Rwanda culminating to the death of close to 1 million people is no secret. It has been 19 years since the world watched in disbelief as a nation descended upon itself in a move to exterminate one another. In order to bring justice to the victims, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) was formed to prosecute the core perpetrators. This court was established in November 1994 by the United Nation Security Council to try those responsible for the genocide and other violation of international law in Rwanda. These crimes ranged from planned exterminations of the ...
Proactive management in criminal justice refers to prevention of crime by showcasing the presence of police in a particular crime-prone area. Criminal minded persons with an intention of creating havoc to the public become aware of police presence and avoid engaging in criminal activities for fear of negative consequences. At times referred to as proactive policing, proactive management of crime is the opposite of reactive management that responds to complaints after a crime is committed. The goal of proactive management in criminal justice is to avoid problems rather than to solve it. Avoiding crime provides the best solution to the criminal ...

As a matter of fact, the US has more number of privately owned guns than ...
The police department suffices for general purposes of law enforcement. However, the organization and staff levels often depend on various activities. For instance, New York Police service oversees more activities in comparison to City of Cumberland Police department which oversees lesser activities. In York, the staff level surpasses five hundred while Cumberland only has fifty officers with four personnel officers.
New York police are organized functionally with internal departments including neighborhood association, York County gang prevention, police alert network, and police community service. On the other hand, in Cumberland the staff is organized in three broad categories which ...
Is this patient competent to stand trial? How to evaluate mentally ill criminal court defendants
– Article review
In 8-15 % of felony cases involving patients with a history of depression, defense counsels raise the question of whether their clients are competent to stand trial. This arises from issues such as previous history mental illness or difficulties in cooperating with the client. When such situations arise, the judge may request for an independent evaluation of the client.
Assessing competency to stand trial may involve the use of a number of assessment tools. For example, the MacArthur Competency Assessment Tool is one of the instruments used to determine the ability to understand issues around the trial. In ...
In comparison, both models call for the enforcement of laws during the administering of criminal justice, maintenance and control of order in the society, and protect people from injustice practices. On the other hand, the due process model and the crime control model differ in the following manner. In general, the model aims at controlling the criminal behavior of people with an assumption that it is the most essential aspect of criminal justice. On contrary, the due process ...

It is observable in the aspect of what is seen or heard. For instance, if a subject is speaking, yelling, writing or even dancing. The behavior is more about how a certain feeling is expressed for instance by making faces, yelling, or even portraying various body postures. Up-to-date technologies, which are used in forensic biology and medicine, allow identifying people by DNA, which is extracted from such biological materials as blood, saliva and seminal fluid. However, in 1964 biologists were unable to conduct such kind of analysis, so nobody knew for sure, who had strangled and raped young Mary Sullivan ...

My stand is that citizens should never be executed. Executing a citizen amount to a gross violation of ethics and it brings more harm than correction. In the emotional perspective, execution of a citizen leaves a mark that cannot be erased on hearts of persons close to the executed person, it can never heal. Rather than being a corrective means, it turns out as a traumatizing experience to the family members of the executed; it can take a very long time for them to recover and come into terms with the reality. Capital punishment can very effectively be replaced by life imprisonment, which though separates the ...
Jonathan Turley in the article ‘Polygamy laws expose our own hypocrisy’ outlines the controversy of polygamy laws in the United States. Although he also detests polygamy, he finds the laws covering the concept a bit contradictory to some religious beliefs as well as the initial statues like the first amendment which was passed to protect the American citizens. It is because of such reasons that the author thinks these laws only expose the hypocrisy of the American people. Most importantly, Turley makes a keen use of examples in his article to persuade the readers that his thoughts are in fact valid. ...
