If you are a high-school student or a parent of a teen, you may find that there is a dearth of special offers aimed at you. No longer eligible for children’s deals, not yet eligible for the college ones. Tough. Yet understandable. After all, most high school students don’t have an independent income and get a free ride from their parents anyway.
However, some companies make no distinction between secondary and post-secondary students. You can get a reduced price from them simply by showing your student ID or verifying your status in some other way. In this post, we will dive into the sea of offers for some pearls of discounts for high school students.
High-School Student ID Discounts on Laptops and Ed Tech
There might be precious little places with specific high school ID discounts. Still, many tech companies offer educational promotions that include either high-school students or their parents under the umbrella of beneficiaries. Here are some examples.
Microsoft
Microsoft is famous for supporting education. For example, they offer full access to their Microsoft Office 365 Education suit free for students and teachers. To get it, submit your school email on the Microsoft website. Moreover, they give a 10% discount for students and parents on Surface laptops and accessories and special offers on apps and education tools.
Apple
Apple offers “education pricing” for students and their parents, faculty, staff, and homeschool teachers. Their back-to-school offers occur each summer and are available until supplies last, but there are no regular discounts. Each year it’s a different selection of price cuts and freebies. For example, free Air Pods with every Mac or iPad, one year of Apple TV+, or three months of Apple Music free with 50% off for students after the promotional period ends.
Samsung
Students and faculty members with a valid school, college, or university .edu email are eligible for a 10% education discount, which can be added to most offers. As a result, students can save up to 30% off Galaxy Phones, Laptops, Tablets, and other items.
Best Buy
Best Buy offers a special Student Deals program for education technology and supplies: from laptops and tablets to printers and ink. They also have smartphones, smartwatches, wireless accessories, and even home appliances like mini-fridges and coffee makers at reduced student prices.
To access all the discounts, you need to register My Best Buy account and sign up for Student Deals. You are eligible if you are currently enrolled in at least one course at a post-secondary educational institution. This means if you are taking a class at your local college while still at high school as dual enrollment, you are in! However, even if you are just a school kid, your parent or legal guardian can access Student Deals instead.
New York Times
New Your Times and Verizon have partnered to help high-school students stay connected and well-informed during difficult times. Currently, they say the offer will be valid through September 1, 2021. It gives free access to all The New York Times journalism online to all high-school students who are 13 years or older, teachers, and administrators.
Do High School Students Get Student Discounts on Entertainment?
The answer is yes. Definitely. Here are the places where you can have fun on a budget.
Green Man Gaming
Some entertainment can be accessed in the comfort of your home – for example, videogames. Green Man Gaming gives 15% off the full price PC and Mac games to high-school students over 16 years old. Unfortunately, this offer cannot be combined with other discounts. To access it, verify your status with Student Beans.
Spotify
Can high school students get Spotify discount? Unfortunately, no. Spotify is one of those cases where “student” means strictly college student discounts. The service states it clearly in their policy. You must be at least 18 years old and enrolled in the accredited degree-granting school to access the offer. However, high school students living with their parents may benefit from a Family subscription that allows up to six devices under one roof. Quite a bargain! Suggest this idea to your parents. If it fails to impress them, there is always a free account with some ads and limited mobile app skips.
Madame Tussauds
Both high school and college students get 15% off the entry fee if they show their valid student ID. Organized school trips with booking in advance are even cheaper. The museum offers lesson plans on history, media and fake news, art and design, technology, and business studies.
Carnegie Hall
Did you know that you could get a ticket to select Carnegie Hall concerts for as little as $10? With a valid student ID, you may buy two discounted tickets at the box office and take your high school sweetheart on a sophisticated date. Alternatively, verify your student status online and get more special offers as a Student Insider.
Movie Theatres
You get a special student price for movie tickets if you show your student ID at the box office at AMC, Cinemark, Regal Cinemas, and others. In fact, it’s often the case with all kinds of theaters and shows, albeit some of them reserve discounts for less popular times and dates.
Brick-and-Mortar Stores that Offer High-School Student Discount
Some retailers limit their online discounts to college students because online status verification is a complicated process. Third-party apps access data from participating schools and for legal reasons cannot access data on the underage. However, these same retailers often give discounts to high-school students if they show a valid student ID. Here is the list of brick-and-mortar stores with high school student discounts.
Banana Republic
This apparel retailer has a Style With Class discount that grants anyone with a valid school ID 15% off the in-store purchase. If you have to shop online (nowadays most of us do), there is always some promotion or other, including significant family discounts.
Club Monaco
Get 15% off your in-store purchase by showing your valid student ID at checkout. An online discount is also available, but you will have to submit a .edu email if you have one.
Eddie Bauer
Famous for its clothes and gear for outdoorsy people, Eddie Bauer gives 10 to 15% off to high school and college students ready to venture outside their cozy home and come into the store. All you need is to show your valid school ID at the cash desk.
Goodwill Southern New England
If you are a responsible consumer who cares for the planet and wants to reduce personal fashion footprint, you can save twice! Students with a valid ID get 20% off their entire purchase every Tuesday in America’s biggest thrift store chain.
24 Hour Fitness
24 Hour Fitness occasionally offers special student pricing as a promotion. At select locations, memberships can be available at a discount, but you will have to check with your local gym. Alternatively, follow 24 Hour Fitness on social media. They often release special deals to their Facebook followers.
There is always a chance of buying a used item in good condition on eBay, in case you are interested in 24 Hour Fitness items rather than membership.
Travel Discounts for High-School Students
Whether you are looking to save on your daily commute or need a good price for an entertaining tour, there is always a chance to find a nice discount.
Viator
Viator gives 10% discounts for high school student over 16 years old on many tours and attractions. To use the coupon, you must sign up and verify your status with Student Beans. The nice thing is that this price cut can be combined with other promotions on viator.com.
Lufthansa
The famous German airline company has a unique GenerationFly discount program for US students traveling internationally. You can access over 470 destinations at reduced fares if you register with the program via your official school email. Unlike many similar offers, GenerationFly does include high school students.
Car Insurance
As a rule, car insurance rates are higher for students, since being young and inexperienced, they are seen as high-risk drivers. However, there are several ways to get a discount. The first is a “good student discount” that is usually about 10 to 15% off. You can prove that you are responsible and careful by demonstrating good school grades (usually an average B or a GPA of 3.0) or high SAT, ACT, or PSAT scores. Also, being in the top 20% of your class or submitting an administrator-signed letter that testifies to your high achievements can help.
The second option is a driver’s training program discount. Check with your high-school whether you can sign up for driver’s education classes or additional courses like defensive driving. Completing them can reduce insurance fees for teenage drivers.
Fox Rent a Car
For those of you who don’t have a car to ensure, Fox Rent a Car offers a 20% discount off vehicle rentals. Student discount code is available if you are at least 16 years old and have verified your high school student status with Student Beans. You can use it at all Fox US Corporate Stores on all cars, vans, and SUVs available at the time of your order.
NJ Transit
NJ Transit allows New Jersey students to save on regular commute. If you reside and attend a public or accredited private school in New Jersey, you save 33% off the regular price bus ticket and 25% off the light rail ticket. There’s also a 25% discount on student monthly passes. To use the monthly pass, you must first approve your application with your school.
Please note that you cannot benefit from the reduced bus fare price if you are buying your ticket aboard the bus! You must purchase the ticket before boarding the bus or obtain it from your school. Light rail tickets must only be obtained from your school before the ride. You cannot buy them at a reduced price from the Ticket Vending Machines.
Where to look for more discounts?
Your .edu email
New schools can currently apply for .edu domains only if they are post-secondary institutions, aka colleges or universities. However, many high schools do have .edu domains already and issue .edu emails to their students. Such an address can unlock many student deals in online stores!
There is a hurdle, however. Many sites use third-party services (like SheerID) to verify your eligibility. They make sure you are at least 18 years old and enrolled in one of the participating higher education institutions. So, close but no cigar. Still, you might be lucky. For some online stores and services .edu email at the registration is enough, so go ahead and try it.
ISIC
As a rule, secondary schools issue student IDs with photos, if only for book checkouts and free lunches. However, some schools don’t bother. What can you do if your school is one of them? There is one solution.
International Student Identity Card costs $20 a year. It is recognized in most countries, so on top of the cheaper commute, you will get much cheaper flight tickets. Plus, you will access all student benefits while traveling abroad with your family.
StudentRate
StudentRate.com is a great place to look for exclusive discounts on apparel, home goods, laptops, jewelry, video games – you name it. Use a valid .edu email address to register and browse deals you are eligible for in many categories – from makeup to consumer electronics. Some partners offer cashback or coupons instead. You can also judge how useful a deal is by the deal score rating – and vote yourself.
ID.me
This service verifies your identity and gives you access to discounts you are eligible for, based on what they know about you. Moreover, some online retailers use ID.me as a third-party verification service. Therefore, by creating an ID.me account, you can access many deals without unnecessarily exposing your personal details left, right, and center. Students can submit their name, school, year of graduation and upload images of their IDs, transcripts, or class schedules to verify their current enrollment.
WowEssays
We also like to give away discounts and coupons. For example, you get a guaranteed coupon for your first 'write my essay' order! We offer bulk discounts, special holiday discounts, and a referral program as well. Besides, we have a loyalty program that allows you to earn credits and use them to pay for the next order.
