However, the above-stated assumption is majorly limited to the visible elements of communication like images (cartoons) and the texts in spite of the fact that there are many other significant elements of visual communication used in the comics which jointly craft the desired impact. ‘Understanding comics, the invisible art’ is a book which encompasses the conceptual application of various such elements ...
When getting deeper to the real nature of crime and punishment connected to the case of Adolf Eichmann, the author underlines two main challenges that the readers witnesses. The first one is connected with the legal judgment that is closely connected with legal intention. The main issue here is whether the courts had to present the reliable proof of the fact that Eichmann had an intention of the genocide commitment in order to convict him of this terrifying crime (Ardent 19).
Here the main interest represents the fact that Eichmann had a serious lack of real intentions as he ...

In her book, Literature as Exploration, Louise M. Rosenblatt takes us through a comprehensive review of literature work and how it should be perceived. It is a challenging piece of literature that encourages both the readers and the teachers of English to look beyond the style and wording of the work and reflect it more on their lifestyles. In most cases, literature has been used mainly for teaching grammar and ignoring other aspects of the book which mainly inspired the author to come up with the literature. She emphasizes on the importance of drawing an emotional connection between the reader and ...
The book by Michael Byram “From Foreign Language Education to Education for Intercultural Citizenship: Essays and Reflections” is devoted to learning foreign languages in terms of culture at primary school. Language learning without cultural dimension is believed to cause danger, since children would use it to encode their own world, with no experience of “otherness”. Teaching is determined by social, political, and economic position of the society. According to the author, internationalization and globalization leave an impact on the educational sphere, and language teaching methodology requires revision, with consideration of intercultural competence. On the other hand, language learning is ...

Book Review
The book discusses the impact of centralization and decentralization of organizations. The authors show that while the lack of a leader may represent chaos, the lack of a traditional leader may be a good way for the organization to survive since there is no specific leader that the rivals can target in order to destroy the organization. The story of the Apache community is used to demonstrate the strength that exists in a decentralized organization. The Apache community was able to defeat the Spanish army because it did not have a centralized leadership. In the same manner, when MGM, a giant in the production industry, ...

Humans could not live without drinking. Apart from breathing, drinking is one activity humans must do in order to sustain themselves naturally. In fact, not even eating could satiate the feeling of thirst – if a person becomes thirsty, he must get a drink or else he could perish earlier than another person deprived of food does. Water stood as a natural resource humans consume for drinking. Yet, innovation led humans to use water to develop various kinds of drinks. Therefore, Tom Standage bases his book A History of the World in 6 Glasses on the unfolding of ...

It was a nice surprise for me when I did not find any over-applied solutions in the book. I found the book very useful ...
Book Review: Beyond the Founders: New Approaches to the Political History of the Early American Republic
Paisley et al.'s book Beyond the Founders: New Approaches to the Political History of the Early American Republic charts the development of both the upper and lower class people who settled in America during its infancy. According to the authors, the politics of America as it developed were constructed and determined by the actions and activities, as well as principles, of everyone in America, not just the elite. No matter what their background, individual Americans of all shapes and sizes and economic statuses determined the politics of this infant country. Accommodation and contestation were the primary weapons by which ...

It is, therefore, important to have an open mind and think in a connective manner.

1. How did the Cold War emerge after W.W.II? How did the U.S.S.R. and the U.S. view actions such as the Berlin Blockade and a policy stance such as the Truman Doctrine differently?
First off, after WW2, the U.S emerged as the sole superpower, mostly because of its nuclear bomb capacity. In addition, the Soviet Union had millions of citizens and was in no position to engage in any new militaristic operations. At that time, the US and the Soviet Union were uneasy allies, because of their mutual fear of the Nazi influence. Their partnership was “born of a ...

Fashion has raised a great deal of contention, resistance and criticism over the years. The media provides the society with a display of images that range from the real to the perceived. Large mass marketing clothing companies and influential fashion houses determine the direction of fashion, influence the opinion of the public and put up production and distribution structures worldwide. Fashion continues to exist in the public domain amid feelings of strong links with pride, misuse and craziness. This situation can be conveniently attributed to a myriad of factors ranging from psychological problems to feeling of spite on reality television. However, it can ...

Aristotle’s notion of happiness is quite different from our understanding of happiness. He called happiness an “activity” while the contemporary interpretation of happiness is a placid state of human mind. Thus, happiness now is seen as an emotional state rather than the result of certain action. Greek word eudaimonia can be rendered as “success”. People who are successful according to this notion are not in a particular state, but they live successfully. Aristotle considered happiness as an ongoing state caused by actions, rather than temporary euphoria. He stated that virtuous people can be happy when they exercise their virtues. A ...

‘Winter has settled down over the Divide again; the season in which Nature recuperates, in which she sinks to sleep between the fruitfulness of autumn and the passion of spring. The birds have gone. The teeming life that goes on down in the long grass is exterminated. The prairie-dog keeps his hole. The rabbits run shivering from one frozen garden patch to another and are hard put to it to find frost-bitten cabbage-stalks. At night the coyotes roam the wintry waste, howling for food. The variegated fields are all one color now; the pastures, the stubble, the roads, the ...
Globalization and its Discontents is a pleasurable and thought- inciting book. It’s written by one of the most renowned Nobel laureate Joseph E. Stiglitz in 2002. It is perhaps the utmost decipherable, lucid, and delicate attack against globalization during the past couple of years. Though the author struggles, in a slightly rigid style with some shadows of pride, against his ideology of deceitful free-market mindsets, his style is unpretentious and reachable to a widespread audience. However, this is also illusive to some extend. ‘Although the writer stresses on time and again that he is not directing an attack against market principles ...
Review of Tamsyn Barton’s book ‘Ancient Astrology’
Ancient Astrology written by Tamyson Barton is a fresh and an objective perspective upon a persuasive yet often overlooked subject of social science. The book has two important theses, one is the premise that astrology, physiognomies, and few other "pseudo-sciences," as are under practice within the various societies where they are largely accepted, have similar claim to the authenticity of these fields as in the case with the other subjects that contemporary Western societies consider to be "scientific." Secondly, it is suggested by the author that the study should be based more on the history of the "sciences"; and that every ...

Teaching is noted as a series of procedures taken into account by educators as they go along particular responsibilities of engaging in the process of passing on knowledge to their students. In relation to the concept of teaching, teachers are expected to take on necessary procedures that are considered essential especially when addressing the different needs of the students given that they are all unique learners. One of the most common patterns of approach taken into account by teachers is the idea of implicating holistic instruction; an approach that affects not only ...

The story by the narrator, Mitch Albom relieves an experience of touch and intimacy between a teacher and student. The teaching of Mitch by Morrie continues even after the latter’s final days in College 1979. It appears awkward that Mitch actually failed to fulfill his promise to visit the favorite teacher. The subsequent episodes reveal a deteriorating nature of Morrie as old age catches up with him.
Upon reading the story, the feeling that strikes me dwells on the nature of teacher student relationship. The linkage between Morrie and Mitch is commendable and unique. As I ...

In his work, Hume distinguishes between ideas and impressions. While impressions are caused by sensory inputs and vivid mental phenomenon, ideas are the thoughts or beliefs related to these memories. Three laws of association—resemblance, contiguity, cause and effect -- come into play in determining the link between impression and idea.
He links the notion of causation to inductive reasoning. He opines that an individual reasons inductively associating constantly conjoined events. This mental act of association is termed by Hume as the concept of causation. In literature, his theory is interpreted in three ways.

In A Shopkeeper's Millennium: Society and Revivals in Rochester, New York, 1815-1837, Paul E. Johnson explores the Rochester revival of 1830 and 1831, noting the social institution of religion as it played into society and culture in 19th century American, particularly in western New York State. In his compelling book “31 Days: The Crisis That Gave Us the Government We Have Today,” Barry Werth sheds new light on the four weeks after President Richard M. Nixon resigned and departed from the White House in 1974, and the ongoing effects of that period. After Nixon’s departure when Gerald Ford reluctantly assumed presidency, the country was reeling from Watergate scandal. All in all, Werth’s book highlights the burden of the demanding ...
In Milton Friedman's Capitalism and Freedom, Friedman argues that political freedom cannot come about without economic freedom, and argues for the perpetuation of the free market as a philosophical and practical solution to many of society's problems. Friedman's perspective is decidedly liberal, though this is framed through the European definition of the word (i.e. limited role of government), instead of the American one (expansion and increase in size of the social safety net).. In this way, he seems to be the quintessential libertarian, believing that the private sector can and should provide for the needs of a free society. This ...

He felt jealous of the dead SS soldiers because they had a connection to the living world through the sunflowers and butterflies could visit their graves. The two adjectives which certainly can be used when one describes father-son relationship within the novel “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” are the words “unusual” and “complicated”. In fact, one may mention two examples of father-son relationship in this novel: the relationship between Thomas Shell Sr(referred to as Grandpa) and his son Thomas Shell Jr. and the relationship between Thomas Shell Jr and his son Oskar who narrates most of the story. In both cases the relationship was developing on rather tragic background. Because of this they were notably strange, as the characters had to deal with life ...
