But the lasting effects of the modern period were felt in the early 19th century up to the early phase of the 20th century. Is this even possible in today’s vast and sweeping art market? It most certainly is, and records for highest priced artworks sold over the last century continue to be broken to this very day. However it is our intention to explore specifically as to why such simple ...

Introduction
In the 19th and 2oth centuries, artists found new ways of representing their work that was opposed to the conventional way in which art was done. Many of them developed new styles that incorporated modern art which sought to highlight the aspect of postmodernism in the ways of life of the people. Such art was different from what was identified in the centuries that were prior to the 18th, especially what was the case in the renaissance. The artists curved art and offered continuity if what their predecessors had left, but only did so with a sense of freedom and ...

The prison has become a much more dangerous place since the coming in power of California’s big four gangs. Prisoners are being forced into doing their bidding while they involve these unwilling participants in drug trafficking, contraband smuggling, and assaults. The same is what professor Vasquez says in lecture 2 for week 1, that if they order a crime; the inmates have to get it done. In case they refuse, they have to face ‘consequences’.
The urgency to take action on these prison gang members is because they have the power to be extremely notorious and they never ...
When taking the first look at this painting, it is impossible not to notice a vast discrepancy between the positive and the negative space of it. The positive space takes up the major and central part of the painting, particularly pushing the negative space aside in the upper half of the canvas. The disproportionate amount of the positive space against the negative space is prominent in this painting. Therefore, the figure of a woman appears to be instantly grasping one’s attention, and the focus is drawn to the upper half of the woman’s body. This is what ...

One artist captures you with his subtle strokes while the other captivates with the sheer drama that happens in the canvas. Chuck Close’s “Frank”: Everyman as Art
The late author Douglas Adams said that art is holding a mirror up to the Universe – although he then pointed out that there was not a mirror big enough, since the Universe was infinite in size. So what’s an artist to do? American artist Chuck Close brings that mirror down to size by making his subject huge. In “Frank” (1969), a grey-toned acrylic painting of a black-and-white photograph, an everyday man becomes a monumental work of art. Close shows that the everyman is just as valid a subject for art than classical themes or the upper class.
It has only been very recently ...
For the vast majority of the history of art, protest has been limited to the written forms. Whether it is the ancient story of Antigone, calling the codes of honor of ancient Greece into question, or Boccaccio’s Decameron, ridiculing the high horse atop which the Catholic Church attempted to perch during the Black Plague, or the portrait of infinite government surveillance in Orwell’s 1984 that still chills readers today, the tradition of protest is much older in writing than in visual arts. This should not be taken to suggest that artists in other genres did not have ...

“Modernist Painting” by Clement Greenberg is his first essay on modernism, and it is notable for showing his mid-life perception and importance of the avant-garde. Although he does not mention the term “avant-garde,” instead, he uses the words “authentic art,” He identifies Modernism with the intensification and according to him the essence of Modernism lies in the characteristic methods. He considers Immanuel Kant to be the first Modernist. He describes how Modernist trend applies to the painting disciplines, how the transparency of medium and technique is used on the flat plane of the canvas. He compares the Modernist painting ...

The focus of the essay is to analyze “Mercury and Argus” by Carel Fabritius and how effectively it conveys the impression of deep space.Mercury and Argus, 1645-47, oil on canvas - Carel Fabritius. This painting “Mercury and Argus” appeared in a saleroom in Monaco, signed by Carel Fabritius, who was one of the most brilliant students of Rembrandt (Raux 103). The rustic genre scene of the painting portrays a mythological theme according to which Argus, a ...

France is something like a Mecca to the art world, yet it would be fair to say the “god” of this sacred city has changed seats more times than a game of duck-duck-goose. I plan on comparing and contrasting two periods of art: the mid-19th century versus the early 20th century. One may be tempted to think that Realists and Cubists were light-years apart. After all, Realism depicted the world from an empirical perspective, focusing on veracity, while Cubism is considered by many to be the first abstract art style. Both art periods were a reaction to, a rebellion against, ...

Hierarchic scale refers to the act or process of manipulating the size and the space in a given picture. Usually, this is done in order to emphasize the importance of some specific object in the picture. For instance, when an individual undertakes to paint a picture of some woman in a farm of vegetables, one could do several things to the picture in order to emphasize the importance and the value that is attached to the object in question. If the most important thing in that picture is the shoe that the woman is wearing, then the person painting the picture would ...

I decided to visit the Norton Simon Museum of Art, 411 W. Colorado Blvd. Pasadena, corner of Orange Grove Blvd. and Colorado Blvd and can safely say that I was pretty much bowled over by the experience. Paintings are arranged in a very helpful manner and I was definitely spoilt for choice with regards to the array of works on offer. First off I decided to analyse Pierre Auguste Renoir’s seminal painting, ‘The Pont des Arts, Paris’ dating from 1878 and which is oil on canvas. This is a truly seminal painting in French impressionist style and it demonstrates the ...
The exterior of the Metropolitan along 5th Avenue is a wide plaza with small areas with greenery, fountain and places to sit and relax. The plaza is being renovated so the usual effect of the large plaza leading into the well lit and airy lobby was not one hundred percent but it could still be felt. The two areas, internal and external seemed connected and moving for one space to the other seemed perfectly natural. The lobby/front hallway of the interior of the museum was so open and airy I felt very small and that the design was made to ...
Georgia O'Keeffe is one of the most influential and well-known artists in modern American history. Her unique vision and her ability to expressly capture the environments and objects she paints are well-renowned, as well as her capacity to bring evocative feminist messages through in her works. Ever since her discovery in New York in 1916, she has existed as one of the most integral female artists in the world, providing a uniquely feminine voice to art long before women were able to successfully break in a major way into the art community. Her unique and vivid style is exemplified in the ...
The shift towards the Modernist Period from the decadence of the Baroque happened as a result of the outrage and disapproval towards lavishness in creating works of art, a trend once dominant and fashionable amongst the wealthy circles. What emerged as a result of this isolation was a new artistic movement that focused more on inspiring awe and sublime rather than theatrical presentation of the iconography. The term Modernist period has been debated throughout the centuries by the scholars since this period holds accountable of the changes in government and the people’s way of thinking. The Modern period from the late 19th to the early phase of the 20th century served as the catalyst for the beginning of avant-garde works of different artists whose works isolated their styles from the rest of the artistic movements that emerged in the previous eras. The artists who popularized these method includes Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, and Larry Rivers each of the defined the early ...

Paintings serve as the visual records that provide the 21st century with important information regarding the structure of the society, culture, styles, and the ideologies that prevailed in that period. Woman Holding Balance and Birth of Venus
While art may often imitate life, it also reflects passions and beliefs. These expressions are consistent, in some ways, across history and style or form, however, each expression is unique and contains qualities that others do not. This can be seen in two iconic works with female subjects in “Woman Holding Balance” and “The Birth of Venus.” These two works are similar in their iconic representation of the female form, and their religious significance, however their medium, form, and subject matter contrast significantly.
First, it is significant to consider the form. Both works are paintings, but that is where ...

His abdomen is vertically straight, his left leg is positioned on the ground while his right is above his bed—he appears to be in motion. This bodily position reflects Socrates’ proud demeanor to die as he lived: passionately discussing philosophy. David portrays Socrates as defiant in his confrontation with his impending mortality. ...

Salvador Dali can be considered the iconic painter of the surrealist movement. He was cheeky, provocative, ironic, and disrespectful in his attitude to all he came in contact with.
