I was looking forward to this year’s Humanics Action Day, and it turned out great. I wanted to mow a lawn and do some gardening. Nature has always fascinated me, and I always feel joyous when I am taking a stroll on a well-manicured lawn with flowers dotting the landscape. I wanted to be part of making a senior citizen’s lawn and garden look trim and tidy.
The gardening was fun. I was in the company of a colleague, and we started by planting some bougainvillea and lily flowers on a small garden at the centre of the lawn. I did not ...

Chapter 11 of the book “Society in Focus: An Introduction to Sociology” by William E Thompson and Joseph V. Hickey is titled Sex and Gender and explores the relationship between the two elements and their interpretations by different members of the society. There are countless debates about the differences men and women and this is something that two authors tackle in this chapter. They attribute the enormous debate regarding differences between men and women to people’s confusion of the terms sex and gender which they claim are totally different words. The authors discuss various concepts related to ...
I. Introduction
I will base my research paper on the isolation of the aged in the society. The paper will delve deep into the problems that face the elderly in the society today. The research was triggered by my service in an organization that exposed me to elderly people. After interacting with them, I was privileged to observe them and get a subjective view of the issues they undergo in their daily lives. I served in an organization known as ABCD North End, where I got to interact with the aged from Boston community.
My responsibility involved familiarizing them with computer skills ...
The impact of aging in United States
Currently, there are more than forty million elderly persons above sixty years in the United States. Statistically, studies show that the population elderly people will double in the next three decades. Such significant increase in the aged population is attributed to the better healthcare, good nutrition and overall improvement of human health. There is two percent increase in the population of elderly people over the last decade. The worrying ...

In this paperwork, I am going to discuss about the growing proportion of older adults in the United States and how it may affect the nation economic, politically, and culturally.
It has come to both the government and the citizens’ attention, of the unparalleled pace that the United States is aging at, hence resulting to an increase in proportion of the elderly. The economic, social, medical, and personal situations are strongly affected by this continuous increase in the number of people over age 65 years. Critics have argued that this imminent occurrence of aging will place unexpected pressure ...
Reflection Paper Based On a Real Interview of an Older Adult
Introduction
As one grows older, there is a stark difference in one’s nutritional needs. This is chiefly because of the changing physical condition of the body, resulting in changes in many bodily functions (1). Additionally, their ability to perform tasks that they performed erstwhile is greatly reduced. This is either due to reduced convenience or decreased mobility. Whatever the reason may be, it is important for clinical staff in addition to family members to show concern and sensitivity to the unique needs of the elderly population. This can only be developed by attaining an understanding about their needs ...
CHAPTER ONE
Most people across the world especially the in the United States have high expectations of longer life expectancies. The observed results if this high expectation is a vital factor in the demographic changes of a given country, and results to an increased population of the number of people who live past the age of sixty five years. The results of increased elderly population, therefore, results to the growth in the interest of the subject of gerontology, a scientific study involving the elderly and aging. Abstract
The phases that elderly people go through in their life leave them exposed to physical and emotional vulnerability. This paper explores the ways in which the elderly face challenges in day to day life, from physical and emotional difficulties to stereotypes propagated in the media. In the face of such stereotypes, the elderly population often behaves in a way expected of them. The elderly are forced to devise methods to cope with these challenges if they are to fulfil the last stage of their life journey in a positive manner. Either by putting a positive spin on situations or by getting the ...

This activity is carried out for an increased understanding of the customers and the market.
The agency has identified four key drivers of satisfaction, based on which the assessments were carried out. The key drivers were; product/service quality, speed and timeliness ...
The Dying of the Light is an article by Dr. Craig Bowron that captures the controversy surrounding the role of medication in prolonging life. The author describes that many medical advancements have become a burden to particularly elderly patients who in most instances are ready to embrace the reality of death. Dr. Bowron believes that dying in these modern times has become a tiring and unnatural process. “Everyone wants to grow old and die in his or her sleep, but the truth is most of us will die in pieces,” Bowron notes (Bowron). The article does not advocate for euthanasia or ...

Providing healthcare to the aged requires two times as much as that of younger persons. Less than half of the elderly have any insurance cover. This has also been made difficult by the rise in the cost of medical care. The aged are different from other age groups and, therefore, require special consideration. Neither age nor distance diminishes a family’s bond. This is my realization when I met my grandmother for the first time.
It is the eve of Thanksgiving. The morning breeze blows softly towards me in the waiting shed. I wish the bus would arrive now. It is sunny, but the bright rays are not hot enough to remove the goose bumps in my exposed arm. I am excited to meet my grandmother. She is coming over for Thanksgiving. I am apprehensive too. After all, it is my first time to see her. I hope she likes me.

Growing older is an achievement for Mr. K that is very noteworthy. Many families care for the aging Mr. K since he serves as reliable advisor. Over the years, Mr. K has gathered experiences of life and has a wide variety of ideas that can help the younger generation in finding solutions to their problems. The problems that greatly need Mr. K’s input are beyond the capability of the younger generation. Dignity is a right that everybody enjoys or should enjoy. A good example is at a time when Mr. K is suffering from a particular illness, respect and love should be ...
Issues Faced by Aging Services
Introduction
Care for the elderly has become a challenge for many in the society. This care is important for the well-being of the people who have spent years taking care of their children and grandchildren. This is an important issue, because, while many are more than willing to take on the challenge of taking care of their elderly relatives, it is a difficult task that needs not only good intentions and love, but the expertise of a multidisciplinary team. The team can provide experience that will support, or augment the family’s efforts. Nursing homes and assisted living facilities can provide ...
Antipsychotic drugs are used for managing psychosis and other mental and emotional disorders. The primary indication of antipsychotic drugs is schizophrenia. It is also used to patients with bipolar affective behaviors and Tourette’s syndrome. Antipsychotics also have indicative components that manage depression. For the elders, it is most commonly used to manage agitated behaviours caused by dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. These two are the most common disease associated to growing old.
For the elderly, these are said to have adverse effects. However, these drugs are still being used to them. Because of their age, it is ...
Media portrayals of the elderly
Old age is one of the realities of life that most people dread to accept. Generally family, friends and society give upon elder citizens counting them as frail and unproductive population. This adversely affects the physical and mental wellbeing of even the positive and upbeat older lot. A lot of older people face indifference of all sorts and suffer in silence. Attitudes towards old age are as important as getting old. According to Hatch (2005) “people absorb impressions, ideas, images, dominant values and sounds that reflect society’s attitudes toward aging from media. In addition, media reflect dominant values ...
The unwanted remnants of our daily life usually end up in the garbage. The contents of the garbage can help in determining the culture of a certain individual or group of people. Garbage can also help understand the culture and behavior of the past inhabitants (Davies 34). The eating culture of an individual can also be determined with the content of his or her garbage. Archeologists also use the content of the garbage to tell certain traits of the past generation. The main setting of this garbage study will be at home and in specific the kitchen area. The paper has the objective of thoroughly analysis a paper on the impacts of age stereotypes in the older people in the society. Studies show that stroke survivors with poor oral hygiene have a poor quality of life (Armstrong and Mosher 2011). (Lam et al. 2014) have explored the effect of clinical oral health and socio-demographic factors on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in patients following stroke. Oral health-related quality of life results were received before and after provision or oral health promotion interventions. Eighty-one patients faced a stroke rehabilitation ward. OHRQoL have also determined the outcomes after in-hospital oral health intervention programme. They observed a significant association between the absence of regular daily brushing and majority of measurement scale items (6 out of ...

The rate of mortality of the elderly in the society has reduced over the years. There is also the evidence of the health of the people improving. There has been a notable rise in the demand for proper healthcare especially for the people who are on Medicare. The life expectancy of the elderly has even improved as people now live for longer periods of time (Fussel, 2004). Additionally, it is exceptionally critical to note that the cost that one endures when trying to maintain their healthcare costs have significantly gone up. A person who is in better health would spend ...
Older people have complicated health care demands that make the entire medical service unique. Studies show that more than half of the adult population above the age of sixty-five has more than three medical complications. Geriatrics refers to a special branch of medicine that deals on the health of elderly patients. Dorothy’s post response
Nurses can have a great impact in influencing health policies. It is indeed true that the nurses’ value has been undermined greatly in the past. As such, nurses need to become more politically aware of their importance in research and development of polices that affect the people. It is indeed true that most of the policies have been developed from research and nurses have played a big part in closing the gap between research and policy. Nurses play an advocacy role for the patient since they spend most of the time with patients compared to the time the doctors.

In this paperwork, I am going to discuss a case study, whereby, I will be giving my recommendations for Ruth condition and giving the appropriate living environment that I believe will have the greatest likelihood of success. I will also include what modern research say about the practice regarding the long term care for the elderly. According to the case, Ruth is described as being unsympathetic and unbearable towards Beth, hence creating a good environment for the establishment and growth of ...
Capture and control; this is the current system of policing in the country. Instead of giving attention to improving options of providing rehabilitation options for the incarcerated inmates, the police office is more concerned about catching more to put behind the bars. As a result, the prison population continues to increase and the need for expanding jail facilities become a great problem not only for the administration but for the whole community as well. Supporting the needs of these incarcerated inmates post distinct problems when it comes to managing the budget allotted for the support of the justice systems imposed in ...
Stroke is also referred to as a brain attack, occurs when there is a blockage of blood circulation in the brain. Decreased blood flow which results to the lack of oxygen in the brain causes the brain cells to die. There are two types of strokes. Stroke is caused by the restriction of blood vessels in the brain and stroke caused by known as ischemic stroke that is the most common(Moser, 2006, p. 6). This type of stroke is, as a result, of a clot in the vessel that leads to a blockage in blood flow or the narrowing of the artery leading ...

A protective order is a ruling or order given by a court of law that protects an individual from physical, sexual or emotional harm or torture from another person or party. In principle, it protects an individual from harm from another person. Harm can include stalking a person. The laws have given specific attention and skewed focus to the children, the elderly and persons living with disabilities. Over the years, the state has reviewed and revised legislation to cover aspects of domestic violence holistically (Foo, 1994, p. 2184). This means that these orders are in place to inhibit the behavior of one ...

In almost every country, in the world, it is evident there is gender inequality. Even though, the problem varies in degrees depending on the age groups and across countries. According to Lorber (2010, p.67), there are many good reasons as to why the inequality gap should be closed; this is because it is good for both girls and boys. Gender stereotypes as well as inequalities usually set back Women and girls as well as men and boys. They learn this when they are very young age and a variety of factors influence them. The problem of gender may, however, be ...
The article “Old McDonald’s,” written by Stacy Torres, a Doctoral Candidate at NYU, offers an interesting view on the value of public spaces in anchoring the lives of elderly who are no longer working and often distant from families and family responsibilities. The article discusses scenes common to places like McDonalds and Starbucks, “public dawdling,” as she calls it that serve a valuable role in the lives of elderly people. Torres calls these places “third places.” These are places outside of work and family institutions and serve as meeting places to foster a sense of community through watching people, interaction and ...
I agree with the notions contained in Alotaibi, Albuthi, and Alalawi presentation on the nutrition education for the elderly population. In the presentation, the authors focus on the premise that nutrition education of the elderly populations should be centred at creating awareness amongst them on the health implications that are likely to occur during old age. Based on a personal thought, nutrition education of the elderly should focus on reducing the rate at which the elderly population depend on others for upkeep. Nonetheless, the current presentation notes that creating awareness amongst the elderly on the nutrition and health related predicaments ...
Age-Based Heath Care Rationing
Death is the final destination of all human beings. No one has ever escaped the claws of death and the same trend is going to continue in the future. The older members of our society are more likely to die as a result of biological aging than other factors. In a market driven society like the US, Health care rationing for the old has become a subject of controversy. With inadequate and scarce health care resources, proponents of health care rationing argue that the government should deny the life sustaining medical care for those above the age of 70. The point of ...

In the article “Blue-Collar Boomers Take Work Ethic to College”, Sander Libby talks about how people that are older that were born in the 1940’s, would not retire until an old age. In addition, she estimates that in 2014, 41 percent of adults aged 55 or older will still be working. This does not necessarily imply that the government would raise the retirement age to above 55 years, but because retiring employee would choose to remain in employment to continue being self-reliant as well as socially and economically active. Thus, people are not able to retire until the ...
Depression refers to medical illness where the body of a person, the mind and the thought are involved. In addition to that, personal feelings are affected and the manner in which a person perceives things is also affected. Depression in most cases is said to affect the ...

Fire outbreaks are particularly dangerous. They often catch people off guard. The danger is not only posed by the fire but also by the noxious harmful fumes produced that leave the affected disoriented. The situation is worse when the elderly are involved. Getting them to safety is a task since they poorly respond to alarms raised. The situation is compounded by motor and cognitive deficiencies brought on by advancing age. Any injuries sustained are likely to be fatal.
It was therefore quite shocking to find out from Paula Span's article written September 30th 2013 in the new old age ...
Interviewing the special population and in this scenario the elderly usually poses a great challenge to detectives and investigators due to a number of factors. Collection of evidence especially through interview of witnesses is critical to the criminal justice system and when the complainant or a witness happens to be an elderly person or persons, proper techniques of interviewing them have to be employed to ensure that no stone is left unturned.
About 13 percent of the population of the United States of America comprises elderly persons aged 65 years old and over. This is approximately 40 million people and for ...

Explain the problems with stereotypes and give examples of stereotypes of the elderly to illustrate these problems
Ageism has been described as stereotyping where the young are considered more superior. In many cases, just like racism and sexism, ageism stereotyping has its own consequences. Over the years, ageism has developed where more value has been considered in being young rather than being old. This misconception is mostly with those who do not have frequent contact with old people as compared to those who do.
Stereotyping has many negative consequences. One of the views of elderly stereotyping is that they are viewed as being alike. In her article for the Oregon Government, Nancy R. Peppard, Ph. ...

A recent Japanese research reported that beauty begins to fade at age 35.09, the question what most people have asked is, what’s this got to do with attitude and happiness in life? Another study recorded that measuring women’s power quotient for women of different ages, scientists concluded that after 35 years and 33 days, women begin to look older and any impact on the skin would be detrimental. Perhaps the question is not when to look ugly, the question is, “how does beauty influence our attitudes to life? Is the pursuit of surreal and plastic beauty helpful ...

Ideally, my interview with the 68 years old man was fruitful. I gathered quite a lot of information pertaining senior citizens in our society. It is therefore important to note that each of us is aging and there are a number of ways in which life will significantly change. From his facial expressions, you could note that he very much treasures his family which has always stood with him. He is very proud of his children who are now grown and independently working and ...

The beginning of the treatment would aim for the survival of the patient by resolving his breathing issue and pulmonary edema caused by cardiomyopathy. Diuretics would be used in low doses to manage the edema, and the treatment would include loop or potassium sparing diuretics because thiazide diuretics are often ineffective in elderly patients with heart failure (Davies, Gibbs, & Lip, 2000).
Once the edema are alleviated, the treatment would switch to ACE inhibitors because previous studies showed they decreased mortality and morbidity rates in all stages of heart failure (Davies et al., 2000). As a general rule, the initial ...

The core of shared governance is partnership and partnering support. Many healthcare organizations are implementing shared governance to expand empowerment and partnership within the organization. Discuss ways in which shared governance enhances employee satisfaction. Describe ways in which shared governance may influence patient outcomes.
Shared governance empowers employees by enabling them to exact more control over their work (Barden et al., 2011). This in turn enhances employee satisfaction and in health care settings translates into improved patient outcomes. Employee satisfaction is the outcome of the process via which an employee appraises his or her relationship with an organization. ...
Introduction: Is there a problem in the Corrections system when it comes to imprisonment of the elderly?
The problem of mass incarceration of elderly citizens has become a growing problem for the U.S. Corrections System in recent years. This problem has been attributed to the financial deficiency and the after-effects of recidivism by offenders who spent over 15 to 20 years in prison. The social security and pensions allowed by the U.S. State and Federal Governments has provided for the needs of the elderly until the years of recession that took the nation by storm in the last decade. The cost of commodities has increased astronomically and with no stable medical facilities, the elderly in our nation ...

Integration model: used to provide seamless and effective healthcare for the elderly population in Singapore
Currently Singapore has no model in place that it uses for providing seamless healthcare for the elderly. This paper therefore suggests for the introduction of integration model in Singapore to be used to provide seamless healthcare for its ageing population. The reason why this model is highly recommended in Singapore is because if primarily focuses on geriatric care and as a trained geriatric nurse it is my passion to see that medical care and treatment of old people is done in the best way. The current system being used for geriatric care in Singapore is in service for the elderly. ...

Arguably, since the spin of the 20th century there has been impossible demographic change in aging. Ageism is the abuse, discrimination, avoidance and stereotyping of the old people in the society (William & Julian, 2008). We are presently living in a society in which its population is growing tremendously, especially individuals over the age of 65. The modern world is probably characterized by a rapid rate of aging. Ageism comes up with different types of social problems. For example each year in America, a minimum of one million and a maximum of three million elderly people are exploited, injured and mistreated by those ...
