There is no known cause for the disorder though genetics and environment play a significant role in exacerbating it. This paper examines the journey of one Carrie Mathison, a CIA agent who suffers from bipolar disorder. Like other patients with bipolar disorder, Mathison experienced frequent maniac episodes.
