There are many reasons for hearing loss during adulthood, a situation reflected in governmental data that approximately 2 - 3% of the population between 16 and 64 has hearing difficulty (United States Census Bureau, 2010; Skinner, 1993). Aging is just one factor within the hearing equation, so it is important that medical professionals acknowledge and address the effect of hearing loss in younger people. In particular, the disability addressed by this paper is hearing loss that occurs during the working years, thus excluding childhood and old age related hearing loss. Although hearing loss during any time of life has major ...

While it is clear that these children do not have much difference developmentally, the parents have to devise unique ways to ensure their children are not disadvantaged. Language forms the ...

Hearing loss is more than a medical condition. Recent studies have highlighted the importance of environmental factors on the psycho-social development of deaf children. These studies reveal that the degree of hearing loss, additional handicap and age at the onset of deafness have a negative relation to psychosocial adjustment of students. However, there has been a positive relation between psychosocial variables and other independent variables like use of hearing, speech, intelligibility, academic achievement and communication methods at school. The findings of this study suggest that, it is not only deafness but environmental factors are also influential on the psychosocial adjustment of deaf ...
Issues In The Workplace Amongst Deaf and Hearing Communties
ABSTRACT
There is a large gap in the communication present when it comes to the Deaf and the Hearing communities. Members of the Deaf community are being treated poorly, being assigned to jobs that they are not trained in, and are unable to learn and advance in their respective fields due to the lack of communication. This disconnect stems from both a lack of understanding and a lack of will to learn and understand from the Hearing community. The Know The Sign Campaign will eliminate this issue through instruction and direct immersion and interaction for members of the Hearing community into ...

Before I became aware of Deaf culture, I used the term “hearing impaired” to mean someone who had acquired a degree of hearing loss. I associated hearing impairment with older people. If a person was profoundly deaf from birth or an early age, I would have used the term “deaf.” I used the terms because these are the most commonly used words in the general population and also because I had no contact with the Deaf community. Now, I would be more inclined to use the term “hard of hearing” to describe people who had difficulty hearing and who ...

The hypotheses identified for purposes of this assignment is “Sustained middle ear infections among children from birth to 5 years will have a detrimental effect on language development.” The hypotheses states that middle ear infections have a significant impact on the ability of the infant to acquire the necessary information to inform the development of language. That has the effect of leading to language disorders that may spill into adulthood. The assay will discuss various articles that seek to approve or disapprove the above-stated hypotheses. The articles seek to identify the full impact that middle ear infections has on the language ...

A study population of 359 characters was selected for the testing of this theory with both exploratory and theoretical models fitting each other well with a variance of 50.6% and 36.3% respectively in hearing protection applicability.
The research identified barriers and values of hearing protection use as the vital forward planners in both the exploratory and theoretical models. In the theoretical model, health status was distinguished to be an individualistic predictor. At times when modifying factors were permitted to directly relate with ...
The case of Morrissey vs. Brewer, is a 1972 case. The petitioner had been convicted of forgery and was out on parole. He got re-arrested because of a list of violations. The petitioner claimed that his parole was revoked without a hearing, hence his right to a due process was violated. The court of appeal affirmed the District court’s ruling that a parolee is technically in custody, hence was not entitled to a full adversary hearing. The Supreme Court reversed this and stated that a parolee’s liberty is within the protection of the due process. It also stated that the parolee required a preliminary hearing ...

People commit a variety of crimes on a daily basis. Some crimes are minor incidents that do not have an extensive consequence or sentence to uphold by the offender. There are crimes that are committed that are in a higher bracket and these crimes have a more serious sentence. People often commit a crime for a number of reasons. Some crimes committed were not even done by the person who was charged in the incident. There needs to be proof or evidence that can place the alleged criminal at the crime scene when it accrued. It is important that ...
The modern education curriculum calls for inclusive classroom environment where a teacher takes both normal children and children with special needs. Teachers need more skills and experiences on how to handle children with lower incidence disabilities like those with hearing impairments. The institution should consider these accommodations when addressing learning and access needs of learners with hearing impairment.
First, the tutor should consider including a statement in the syllabus that specifies issues associated with accommodating such learners. Identification of all students with hearing impairment should be the first process towards developing accommodation needs. Second, the teacher should come up ...

How does hearing loss change the lives of the members of the Holland family?
A disabled child born in any family can change how that family functions. Mr. Holland’s Opus movie proves this statement when the family gets a kid suffering from a hearing impairment. The kid’s weakness initially becomes apparent to his parents when he does not show a reaction to the noise of a fire truck. In addition, he makes sounds and grunts to talk with his parents as an alternative of speaking. To achieve his parents’ responsiveness he throws the fits so that they can understand what ...

Public administration involves the performance of administrative justice and adjudication process which are the powers that are inherent to the office of a public administrator. In carrying out this administrative function, the law requires that due process should be observed in all administrative adjudication procedures. Other than this rule, administrators are given the discretionary power on how they may carry out the investigation process in order to help them perform their adjudicatory functions more efficiently. This paper will discuss about the essence of due process and hearing in public administration and to differentiate the rule making procedure and adjudicatory procedure ...
What happens with a patient who develops a cataract?
A cataract is the opacification of the crystalline lens in the eye. In a patient with cataract, there is progressive loss in the transparency of the crystalline lens; this is due to changes in the density of the epithelial cells. There is also a derangement in the fiber of the lens cells. Lens transparency can also be because of deposition of minute epithelial masses of apoptotic lens tissue in the substance of the lens leading to disruption of the internal homeostatic mechanism of the lens and accelerating the process of cataract formation. (Vincente Ocampo, 2012)
Cataract initially leads to an increase ...

I visited the Benton County Circuit Court in downtown Carvallis on May 23, 2016 at 1:00pm. The main reason for the visit is in compliance with the class requirement to observe a hearing. Seeing no problem with my request, I was assisted to Court Room no. 4. I arrived early for the hearing as the people were only starting to take their seats in the court room. The case ...

In summary, there are two types of hearing loss; hard of hearing and deafness which is severe hearing. Law enforcement officers experience difficulties when communicating with people who have hearing difficulties. It is also not easy for police officers to differentiate people with hard of hearing from those who are totally deaf. It is important that the police officers understand these people and know how to handle them in order to avoid situations that are not pleasing. For instance, the police should be aware that flashlight interferes with their ability to see and hear. When communicating with deaf people, ...

The Taming of the Shrew is one of the Shakespearean plays that are not traditionally taught in English courses. However, its lively plot and interesting characters make for a remarkable introduction to the Bard. This is because the story is mostly about various “courting” couples, which can be a lively topic as it elicits the timeless battle between the sexes. However, there are other themes and meanings which are explored in the play. The induction scene is an important part of this play because it shows how important different senses, particularly sight, are to humans. The induction scene begins with a drunken ...
Describe the factors to consider when promoting effective communication.
Effective communication takes listening skills. The Manila Bulletin (2010) explains how active listening means getting into the head of who is talking. This means trying to understand his or her point of view about what is being said. Cooper (1997) explains how practicing good listening makes a good tool for communicating because it shows concern for what the other person is saying so if there is need to answer a question then listening gives meaning to what is heard. Then it is possible to analyze the information so it is interpreted correctly. Other parts of communication, according to Craig (1995), Leeds-Hurwitz ( ...

The five sense organs of human beings: sight, taste, touch, smell and hearing are credited to Aristotle. Sight is considered to be the most developed sense, followed by hearing. More recently, the experts have also added another sense called proprioception, or an awareness of the body in space (Bjorklund 2009). Animals have the sensory receptors to sense their surroundings, and some animals can also sense the electric and magnetic field around them. All the 5 basic senses are the main components of perception. For example, music is associated with hearing, perfume with smell, food with taste, and movies are ...

Though there is no way to track such things, one very widely asked philosophical question that rings throughout high school and college classrooms as well as bars and dinner time conversation is “If a tree falls in the forest and there’s no one around to hear it, does it make a sound?” The question in itself is not complicated but its answer says much about the worldview of the respondent. Of course, no one argues that a person’s presence affects a falling tree—it emits the same sound waves whether or not there is someone to detect it. But it is a ...
Sound is the sensation that is produced when the longitudinal vibrations of molecules from the external environment hit the tympanic membrane. Such vibrations in the external environment are called sound waves. Sound waves are produced when vibrating molecules generate changes in pressure. The speed of sound waves in air is approximately 344m/s at 20 degrees at sea level. An increase in temperature and altitude increases the speed of sound. Other media conduct sound at different speeds. For instance, in fresh water, sound travels at a speed of 1450m/s. Sound can be referred in a perceptual response and a physical stimulus. Sound reaches ...
A right to fair trial is an entitlement endowed in constitutions of civilized nations and those that abide by the rule of law. In such countries, trials which do not meet the standards of a fair trial are usually done again to ensure that justice is done. For a person or a case to have gone through a fair trial several standards need to be met. These standards are numerous and sometimes complicated though they are uniform in many countries. These parameters can be found in legal documents which have respect and can be taken as a guide to the direction evolution of law ...

Communication in the workplace, how the people interact, and how they work together to achieve the ultimate goals of the company or the more specific goals of a team will always be an important factor to consider. The quality of communication between employees in a particular workplace setting can spell the difference between a flourishing and a stillborn organization.
There is a myriad of choices and approaches as to how administrators and leaders can improve the quality of communication in the workplace. For decades, the issue as to what the most important skill or communication component to develop has been the topic of debates, ...

Negligence refers to the act of perfuming an activity that can not be done by any reasonable person or doing the reverse to cause pain to another person. This is definitely a violation of one’s right and hence a legal action should be taken for such a person (McDonald, B., 2007). As a branch of civil law called tort, a case may qualify to be regarded as negligence if an incident involves more than just careless conduct, and involves a combination of the concepts of duty and breach of a well established law. These are some of the grounds upon which a case can be based ...

Ethical violations occur in every business field, and the criminal justice system in no different. News reports are not scant concerning individuals in law enforcement, corrections and the courts who have violated ethical codes. Ethical codes exist in the criminal justice field to not only protect the official, but also to protect the public. When an individual in the field of criminal justice violates an ethical code, typically, many people are affected, and it does not matter if the violation was intentional or unintentional, or real or simply alleged.

Marriage is an essential component of many societies, as it involves the union between two people in love with one another who would eventually create a family. As a form of social organization, marriage has become the subject of several controversies, with some outside of the purpose of romantic union. Notable pieces of literature attest to that fact, and this study aims to construct an analysis between two literary works – The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin and A Marriage Proposal by Anton Chekhov, with both literary works establishing that marriage, as a social practice, has found associations with ...

This chapter provides a detailed analysis of emotional and behavioural disorders. These disorders often affect children negatively as they grow and impact their lives in a bad way. Children with EBD (emotional and behavioural disorders) often exhibit difficulties in the way they interact with other people (Michael, Clifford & Winston, 2011). In addition, it also causes great difficulties in the way such children learn and socialize. There are many causes of EBD, some of which could be attributed to internal or external problems or both. Based on statistical derived classification systems and clinically derived classifications systems, various EBD can be identified (Michael, ...
Interviewing the Elderly
When interviewing elderly subjects to see if they have ever been crime victims, certain special techniques are required. As suggested by Reid & Associates (2008), because elderly people as a group may be subject to varying degrees of a range of age-related deterioration of faculties, your first task as an interviewer is to assess the subject’s age-related impairment of faculties, particularly the person’s memory function and senses in general.
If the person interviewed says they have recently been victim of a crime, it is clear that assessing their eyesight and hearing is important. On the other hand, it would be ...

Arguable, the importance of communication are immense in the modern society. It is an extremely difficult and continuous process that enables us to contact persons in the world. The world has been reduced to a village by the various inventions and innovations in the communication sector. Communication can be summarized as the activity of passing meaningful information. The two parties in the communication process should understand each other (Schwartz, 2009).Communication process comes to an end when the receiver understands the sender.
Communication process refers to a guide in the realization of effective communication. Through communication process, the receiver and ...
Principles of Natural Justice
NATURAL JUSTICE
As a law student, Administrative law and Regulatory law has changed my view towards law as it is based on the principle that every action and decision made by the government has consequences. One of the topics that stood out throughout this course is natural justice/procedural fairness. Natural justice is a branch of Administrative law that deals with fairness, reasonableness and equity in judicial offices, quasi-judicial offices and administrative agencies that have legal authority to determine issues affecting rights of individuals.
According to CA Ashish Makhija’s article on “Principles of Natural Justice”, natural justice is based ...

Rights of Workers and the Consequences of Unfair Labor Practices
The National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) was enacted in 1935 by the Congress to protect the rights of both employers and employees, to encourage collective bargaining and prevent unfair labor practices that may harm the welfare of workers and the country’s economy (National Labor Relation Board, 2016). The NLRA assures employees of the private sector the rights of being able to organize into trade unions, participate in collective bargaining to champion for better conditions at work and better terms, and take collective action (strike) when necessary. Introduction
There are a couple of important fundamental differences between a criminal action and a civil action. One of the most apparent differences is the nature of the cause of action underlying the suit. As its name denotes, a criminal action is derived from a past crime that has been committed. A civil action, on the other hand, does not involve a crime, but rather a private wrong to an individual or a group of individuals. Another fundamental distinction between a criminal and civil action is that the parties go to the court. In a criminal action, the prosecution represents ...

After reading the case-study of Juan Hernandez it was difficult to erase the thoughts in my head of the abuse that this little boy was suffering at the hands of his own father. It not only disgusted me, but made me angry. My natural response, had I been hearing something like this would be to be outraged and do whatever needed to be done to get Jorge Hernandez locked away so that he could never harm this innocent little boy or his sister again, or any other innocent child for that matter. Sadly, I also became convinced that this ...

Townes-Brockes syndrome is a genetic condition characterized by deformities in several parts of the body. Obstruction or lack of anal opening (imperforate anus) misshapen ears, and malformation of the hand—usually the thumb. People diagnosed with the syndrome usually display at least three of these characteristics. People with the syndrome may also have kidney abnormalities, some degree of hearing loss, heart defects, and genital deformities. The combination of the symptoms may vary by individual. Although it is not really a characteristic of the syndrome , some 10% of those with Townes-Brocks syndrome showed signs of mental disability.

The Supreme Court case Kent v. United States, 383 U.S. 541 (1966) raised a number of important issues regarding the treatment of juveniles in the criminal justice system. The facts are as follows. The defendant, Morris A. Kent, Jr. was arrested for breaking into a woman’s apartment, stealing her wallet, and raping her (Kent v. United States, 1966, p. 543). He was 16 years old at the time he committed these offenses and, because of his age, was subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the juvenile court (Kent v. United States, 1966, p. 543). Kent was subsequently taken ...
According to Murphy, Fraenkel, and Dalton (345), irrelevant distractors are produced based on the perceptual load of the delegated tasks. Most studies limit the information to the perceptual demands found in hearing. The article thus attempts to provide extensive research and experiments using various load manipulations to measure the level of distractor processing through an awareness and response competition report. The four experiments utilized in the study do not support the duty of personal loads in determining auditory attention. This summary delivers the essential elements and recommendations of the research provided by Sandra Murphy, Nick Fraenkel, and Polly Dalton ...

In psychology, there is a learning theory that states that as we learn, we adjust the manner in which we perceive our environment and the manner in which we interpret the incoming stimuli. Consequently, all this alters the way we interact, or behave. It is from this theory that one learns about behaviorism. The latter is the study or our behaviors after exposure to given stimuli within the environment. This helps us in understanding the effects given stimuli have on us.
In the learning theory, we have classical and operant conditioning. In classical conditioning, one learns to associate one ...
Human perception of sounds is not only performed by an ear as a part of the body. In fact, a person hears through the organ of hearing, which has got complex structure. The ear is only a visible part of it.
Auricle or pinna essentially acts as a funnel through which a person catches vibrations in the air. Coming through the auditory canal, they affect the eardrum – a thin membrane that separates the outer and middle ears.
Then the eardrum vibrations are transmitted to the auditory ossicles and reach the inner ear, the main part of which is an organ called the bony ...
