Raymond Carver’s short story “Cathedral” is a small intimate story, one which effectively revolves around two characters – the narrator, a regular Average Joe, and Robert, a blind man who is a friend of the narrator’s wife. Sklenicka describes the narrator as “a typical bumbling, addictive character with a load of human stains; prejudices blunt-mindedness about his wife’s concerns and needs, a large appetite for food, drink, and marijuana” (372). One of the prejudices he expresses when his wife tells him that Robert’s wife was named Beulah. “Beulah! That’s a name for a colored woman. ‘Was his wife a Negro?’ I asked. ‘Are you crazy?’ ...

"Cathedral" and Fences: Sight and Stubbornness
Sight is a very prevalent theme in a great variety of fiction; it can often be a symbol for understanding, comprehension, and enlightenment. Hindsight and foresight are often rewarded as virtues, or at least play heavily into the plot of a story. A blind person is often thought to ‘see’, or comprehend, more than the normal person, and sometimes people are not aware of a shocking truth, despite it looking them straight in the face. These two scenarios are found in Raymond Carver’s short story “Cathedral" and August Wilson's play Fences, as both main characters are ...
Insrtuctor’s Name
It is truth universally acknowledged that the theme of the human’s choice has always been popular with the poets and writers. It is not surprising that Robert Frost, an iconic American poet, addresses it in his most famous and most quoted poem, The Road not Taken (“The Norton Anthology of Poetry” 1232-1233). In spite of the widely spread opinion that the poem raises the problem of “being an individual” or “taking a different road from the masses” (Fagan 293), I strongly believe that the poet’s major intention is to emphasize that no matter what choice we make ...
“Cathedral” is a small, intimate story, one which effectively revolves around two characters – the narrator, a regular average joe, and Robert, a blind man who is an acquaintance of the narrator’s wife. One fateful night, invited over for dinner, the narrator attempts to understand Robert and his way of life, as well as his relationship to his wife. In the process of this, he begins to understand things about himself, life, and Robert that he could not imagine otherwise – this level of understanding is the ‘sight’ that is discussed in the story.
There is a direct discussion of ...
Robert Frost, an American poet of the late 19th century was dubbed as one of America’s finest poets. Literally, his poems reflect the serene appreciation of quiet living in the countryside, the simple appreciation over small things and the values of life (Fagan, 33). In this paper, I would like to argue that Robert Frost’s poems reflect individuality, despite the gentle poetic words of his poems. Normally, a reader might perceive Frost as an ‘effeminate; due to the quality of his chosen words. Most poets at the time of war use a much stronger voice in order to express ...
Final Essay: Robert Bresson’s Dictum & Film Analysis of “A Man Escaped”
Introduction
The modern film-viewer may anticipate feeling abashed, or risk feeling bored when scrutinizing an old, black-and-white movie that lacks an action package. However, Robert Bresson’s film made in 1956, A Man Escaped, offers a compelling example of filmmaking skills which captivate the attention of its audience. One of Director Robert Bresson’s favorite dictums asserts that “What is for the eye must not duplicate what is for the ear” (“Notes on Sound”). Control of narrative space, and command of sound perspective strategies in the film demonstrate an exercise of the filmmaker’s philosophy. The film analysis herein, ...

Restaurants have a significant role in the business, the intellectual, social and artistic life of a prosperous society. Most of the important events take place in the hotels. Having a chain of restaurant is essential because it leads to decreased production cost such as purchasing raw materials, transportation costs among others and in return, high profits are likely to be experienced. With cost reduction, the pricing of products is also low hence attracting more customers. However, before buying an existing business, it is important to carry out an environmental analysis of the firm. The most appropriate tool for the ...
What is justice and how distributive justice may be defined? Which holdings and which acts should be considered as just ones and which ones should be seen as unjust? What is a just society and how justice correlates with equality and liberty? Two great American philosophers – John Rawls and Robert Nozick - tried to give answers to all these and many other similar questions in their well-known theories on distributive justice. Meanwhile, despite of the same subject two philosophers have quite different views on what is just and what is unjust in a society.
Robert Nozick, the author of ...
People who have a duplicitous nature not only have a hard time making up their mind, but they also have a harder time avoiding temptation. They have not yet made up their mind about what type of person they want to be, and so when illicit opportunities come, they provide a stronger temptation than they do for people who are committed to ethical behavior. Connie has learned to sneak around as a result of her relationship with her parents, and this lack of ethical commitment makes her a vulnerable target for Arnold Friend.
The only escape that Connie has from her mother comes when ...
Security and hacking
We had the privilege of hosting a guest speaker who gave us a lecture on “security and hacking” on the 20th day of November. The scope of the lecture was security on the internet and privacy. For IT enthusiast the speaker was very interesting as he linked theory with the real world experiences. He first introduced Robert Schifreen who is a self-proclaimed hacker. The captivating Robert reaffirmed the fact that with the internet revolution, we are all connected in one way or another; it is now easier than ever to talk to anybody irrespective of their geographical positioning. The ideas and art of Marcel Duchamp that occurred in 20th century had possibilities of influencing other artists that succeeded him. The uniqueness of Duchamp artistic process associated with surrealism and Dadaism remained influential to his succeeding artists. The concept of readymade altered the understanding of artists regarding the object of art. Duchamp refused to accept the existing standards of art hence leading to the development of a newly recognized style. Duchamp left a profound impact to the oeuvre of artists who succeeded him later in the century (Kuenzli, Rudolf, Francis and Naumann, 55). As will be analyzed in this paper, ...
Fiction often has the ability to depict significant spiritual changes in its characters; these people are shown to be significantly unmoored in their lives, needing an external factor or another person to help them find a measure of peace. In the case of James Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues,” the character of Sonny is a drug-addicted derelict who must find a sense of spiritual release through the support and solidarity of his brother, the narrator. With Raymond Carver’s “Cathedral,” an ordinary, blasé, cynical man is given a new insight into his life thanks to the perspective of a blind man whom his wife ...
Pauline is a three year old who is having learning disabilities. Robert is a five year old who is having trouble relating to other kids and the teachers. These two cases of developmental and academic risk are the subject of this paper. Kristina has been asked by the school principal to prepare a report on the biological, cognitive, and socio-emotional factors that would affect these children to the extent that they are having issues with learning and relating to others. Upon observation of the children, it has been found that these children are being affected by a combination of retarded growth that is ...
The narrator in the short story Cathedral does not seem to have much connection with anything or anyone. His wife has asked an old friend to come for a visit. The friend is a blind man she had worked for as his reader. The blind man, Robert, had just lost his wife, Beulah. The narrator’s wife had been a friend of Beulah’s too. The narrator is not in a very good mood about the whole idea. He gives the excuse that he has never been around a blind man before and he does not want to be around one now. But maybe ...

Raymond Carver’s Cathedral has been referred to as “dirty fiction” and this is probably because of his engagement in profound theme. In his book, he tries to explore the rawness and baseness of the human condition (Amir 2010 p 27). The narrator who is a man of limited empathy and awareness breaks through such limitations and socializes with a blind man. The author brings to light the narrator’s actions and also his subsequent self-realization in the end.
Raymond can arouse psychological dilemmas within the readers because of his skillful treatment of various issues. For example, while reading “Cathedral” the ...

Robert Hayden is considered to be one of the greatest African-American poets of the 20th century; writing many poems about the black experience, both contemporary and historical, Hayden also managed to tackle universal themes of loneliness, desperation, parental approval and freedom. Hayden’s work was deeply rooted in the plight of African-Americans, many poems dealing directly with the anxieties and tensions that existed for minorities even during his time. Living through segregation-era America and the Civil Rights Movement, Hayden’s work becomes seemingly synonymous with the struggles of black people to have a voice in culture and art.

On 13 December 2012, Robert Parker, a sports columnist and panelist made racially motivated comments about Robert Griffin III; a Washington Redkins rookie quarterback during an ESPN sports panel show. Parker, an African American himself, questioned whether Griffin was a true African American due to some of his characteristics and behaviors; both physical and social, which seemed to be deviant from those of the “conventional” or “typical” black individual. Parker referred to Griffin as a “cornball brother”, something that his fellow panelists had no idea about and that consequently left them bewildered. Parker then went into a lengthy explanation of what he r meant ...

The concept of higher education in America and policies relating to the application vis-à-vis societal and national importance has been an issue of great controversy in the present time. This is because different interpretations have been given on the real factors underlying the program. Like any other government program, providing education at tertiary level is a government responsibility and, therefore, it is the state that formulates the favoring policies to ensure that its citizens undergo a proper education system. However, this does not necessarily mean that the program does not experience challenges, and to a fact, it does. It is these ...
Edna Pontellier, through her complex and layered portrayal in Kate Chopin’s novel The Awakening, is one of the earliest female characters to be displayed in a sophisticated, nuanced light. Her continual struggle to overcome the often stifling pressures of motherhood and family, while still feeling associated with them, make up a significant portion of this novel. In this essay, the role that feminism and marriage plays in Edna’s journey throughout the novel will be explored. Edna’s search for independence, while admirable and brave considering the restrictions placed on her by 19th century society, is ultimately predicated on male ...

Judicial activism versus judicial restraint is one of the debates that has influenced American jurisprudence for many years. The reason for this is that it is very easy for any human’s mind to be clouded by their personal beliefs. In fact, in many professions, professional struggle with the ability to do what is right for their job versus what may be their moral principles or personal beliefs. It is based on this framework that the debate between judicial activism and judicial restraint originates. Judicial activism refers to the judicial rulings that are decided upon the judge’s political ...
There are various characters that people portray, whether in a formal or even informal organization. The two stories, “The Jewelry” by Guy de Maupassant and the Cathedral by Raymond Carver show a lot of similarities in various ways. Although the two stories were written at different times, with different characters and even environment, they possess a lot of similar themes and ideas, which are shown through the characters.
Two major characters are presented by both stories. In the Cathedral, the anonymous narrator and Robert are shown as people with two different personalities, while in the Jewelry, we have Latain, ...
Psychological development theories divide the development of a child to an adult into stages which carry distinctive characteristics. These theories study all areas of growth in a child till adulthood from the social and biological part to the emotion and cognitive processes (Ezhovkina & Ryabova, 2015). Arguably, it is evident that the story of The Lord of the Flies has many psychological, developmental theories that are applicable in real world context. Notably, the theme of bullying and its causes also comes to play. This paper seeks to discuss Ralph character traits about these psychological development theories. For a fact, the ...

In Raymond Carver’s “Cathedral,” the primary lesson learned by the main protagonist, a provincial man who is glib about a blind man whom his wife invites over for dinner, is that it is more dangerous to be blind to one’s emotional and moral centers. In the man’s attempts to understand the blind man (Robert), he learns himself that he is being too narrow-minded and lacking in understanding. While he judges Robert for his blindness, he himself is blind to the true perception that Robert’s kinder nature brings out in himself and others. Carver addresses these ideas by ...
Dr. Jekyll Is the focal character in “Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” a 1886 novella written by Robert Stevenson. The novel was later transformed into a film that garnered massive attention and criticisms from the public, as well as the media. Apparently, what many people fail to understand is that there is no Jekyll and Hyde. Hyde is just Jekyll after being transformed as a result of taking a concoction that the scientist, Dr. Jekyll, had made. This paper shall candidly and comprehensively strive to explore the thee traits of Dr. Jekyll, and try to elucidate and analyze the settings ...
In the short stories by Carver “Cathedral”, we are introduced to three characters; narrator, narrator’s wife and Robert who is characterized by his blindness. The narrator’s wife was once an employee of Robert where their friendship blossomed. There is an understanding to a hint that they knew and understood each other’s deep secrets. One day Robert pays a visit to his old time friend where he gets to interact with the narrator.
Carver describes ‘looking’ with relation to the physical vision whereas ‘seeing’ is more of an insight level of engagement. Immediately Robert arrives at the ...
Kate Chopin’s late 19th-century novel The Awakening, and its protagonist Edna Pontellier, demonstrates a protagonist with a complex and layered inner life, pioneering the extent to which female lead characters in American fiction could be displayed. Throughout the novel, her sense of self as it is positioned within the societal expectations of wifehood and motherhood in the late 1800s is continually challenged, as she must weigh the pressures placed on her by her husband and community against her own individual wants and needs. In this respect, feminism and marriage play a significant role in Edna’s growth and ...
Identify and describe the different categorization of crimes? How are crimes different than torts?
The common categorization of crimes includes treason, felonies and misdemeanors . Treason, which is rare, is one’s act against the state threatening its sovereignty and integrity. Felonies are serious offenses like murder, manslaughter, rape, robbery, kidnapping, tax evasion etc. that attract several years of imprisonment and a heavy fine. Misdemeanors are less serious offenses, mostly punishable by fines or a brief stay in the jail. Some of the examples of misdemeanors include simple assault, gambling, prostitution etc. However, other simple offenses like traffic violations are not considered as misdemeanors and are generally considered as violations or infractions. The fact that literary works are aimed at mirroring the reality of the human society whether local or global means that there will be a point of convergence among them. The mirroring of the reality of the human society is informed by the need to facilitate and sustain debates that will lead to the finding of solutions to better human society and life. The converse is also true that literary artistes have their works colored by personal, ideological and sociocultural settings and because of this, literary works will diverge on structure, ideas and themes. The case is exemplified by the ...

In many instances, authors use powerful ideas that shift their readers in a way that intrigues their every day understanding of life. It is not debatable that Robert Browning and William Shakespeare were legendary writers of their time. It is also not ironic that although there are years separating the two writers, their work contains similar themes. As a common ground for my comparisons, this paper examines the common ideas and how the themes are brought out in William Shakespeare’s “Othelo”, and Robert Browning’s two poems “My Last Duchess” and “The Laboratory”. Using characters Iago in Othelo, The Duke ...

“The Awakening” was written in an age when women allow society to dictate how they should behave and feel. In one summer Edna changed from a woman voided of feelings to one overwhelmed by her feelings, so much so that she feels she could no longer live in this society.
“The Awakening” is a book written long before its time; it is a satire of the prudish New Orleans’ society of the nineteenth century. In his essay, Robert Cantwell says: “The book was banned from library circulation, and the author refused admittance to the St. Louis Arts Society. Mrs. Chopin was disgusted, ...
The play “Proof” by David Auburn describes how close genius and madness are related. If forms an imagination of the relationship between the two rather distinct qualities of a person. The play focuses on Catherine who leaves schooling to tend to her aging father, Robert, who happened to be respected mathematician in his youthful age. His death brings into surface Claire, her daughter who wants Catherine to travel back to New York. Hal, a former student of Robert, resurfaces after his teacher’s death in search of any helpful piece of work left behind by the mathematician. The discovery of an ...
Robert Frost has written the poem “To Earthward” by using eight cross rhymed stanzas. The author has selected his very regular meter, iambic for this poem. Three iambic feet are visible in the first three lines of every verse of the poem however fourth line of the stanza contains only two iambic feet. It is easy to recognize the meter of the poem for those who are familiar with the hymnal representation meter. There is a prolific cross-pollination of sounds and rhymes throughout the poem. The lyric richness used by the author in this poem is exemplary. The author has ...
Raymond Carver’s short story “Cathedral” is, on the surface, a reluctant acceptance of an unusual guest into the household of a man whose bitter resentment and petty jealousy define his perception of the world and the subsequent erroneous conclusions about it. Despite the fact that unlike his guest, he is blessed with the privilege of vision, he willingly chooses not to put it to good use and instead of truly probing through the velvety surface of things, he will remain stuck in a perpetual state of psychological blindness, until his guest opens his eyes for him.
Even though the narrator’ ...

Introduction
In August 1945, America dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing a total of 129,000 people. The two incidences remain the only known uses of atomic and nuclear bombs in history. The events brought to an end the World War II that had been going on for close to a decade. Paul Tibbets was the pilot of the plane that dropped the two bombs, and up to his death in ...
Q1. The Matthew effect in Robert Holmes project
The Matthew effect refers to the situation in which the richer get richer while the poor continue to be poorer (Gladwell, 15). The lives and prospects of the people of Robert Holmes coupled with the exposition of Gladwell in his book “Outliers” tend to justify the Matthew effect. They lend credence that it is extra ordinary opportunities that we are faced with in life that shape us rather than extra ordinary talents. It is therefore no surprise that the people of Robert Holmes, who are predominantly black, are stuck with poverty no matter their tacit attempts to escape from ...
Was it a surprise attack?
On the morning of December 7, 1942, America woke up to the news of a ‘surprise' attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor. This would trigger America's involvement in the World War II by joining forces with the British to defeat the Germans and the Japanese. The Germans were a great threat to the U.S.A at the moment, and its victory over the British would further threaten the United States' national security. The U.S.A feared that the Germans would join forces with the Southern Americans and incite them against the U.S.A. To resist this, North America had to go ...

The theory of moral sentiments and the poem ‘A Mouse’ talk about the sentiments of human beings. The two writers have different views on human feelings. In the theory of moral sentiments, Smith believes that other people's sentiments drive a person's sentiments. According to him, human beings are driven with sympathy. They tend to be touched by others sad moments rather than the happy moments (Zhang, 33). When someone is sick people will feel sympathy towards that person but when they are in their happy moments, other people are most likely not to share in with the happiness. People become ...

WOMEN’S HEALTH AND CANCER RIGHTS ACT AND HEALTH CARE COVERAGE
The American Cancer Association (ACS) states that “the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA) is meant to protect most women who opt for breast reconstruction after a mastectomy.” This Act signed into law on October 21, 1998, requires most group insurance plans that cover mastectomies to also cover breast reconstruction. In Ms. Jones’s case, her insurance company’s denial of coverage for the procedure does come as a surprise. One reason for this could be that Ms. Jones may not have asked for such a cover or would have been ignorant of this fact. However, it is mandatory that ...

Great Depression has been an unforgettable historical event that led the people of America to experience a big hole of nightmarish misery and poverty. It has been one of the most significant economic events that highlights the 20th century, as foretold by Graham, J. R. Banks had been closed, stock markets had been crashed that later inflicted the significant loss of people’s savings and money—their primary way of survival. From a single, big blow in the economy, a wide-range of variables were greatly affected, leading to a massive recession of economy that later arose into depression throughout the land. This single, ...
Histories of modern law enforcement started about 166 years ago when London Metropolitan Police District was formed in1829. The British Parliament’s objective in a police force is to address the rising number of crime incidents in the area and around the capital. The decision was made by the parliament because of the attributes to crime such as unchecked immigration, alcoholism, poverty, poor infrastructure, aggressive political groups, lenient judges and unmonitored juveniles. London Metropolitan Police had their first chief Sir Robert Peel and he adopted several principles for the he called as “bobbies”. His principles served as the foundation of ...
Formalist Criticism of My Last Duchess
My Last Duchess is probably the best example of the dramatic monologue, a poetical form that was invented and applied essentially by one of the foremost Victorian poets, Robert Browning. A dramatic monologue should certainly have a character who speaks to some particular person, mainly certain silent listener, in the manner of a dramatic speech and has to take place in specific physical setting like that of a drama.
The poem My Last Duchess definitely belongs to the dramatic monologue because it, at first, possesses three formal elements, such as an occasion, a speaker, and a hearer. Secondly, the ...
