When it comes to communication with the mass public, television advertisements are the most persuasive and peculiar forms. These commercials have profoundly influenced habit of thought. With great certainty, it has become a vital model in the structure of public discourse. With commercial advertising, there has been a drift away from the use of prepositions, a universe of address from which words as "true" or "false" come from, since the 1950s. Prepositions were substituted with images that created an emotive appeal rather than challenging the truth-value to form the foundation of buyer's assessment (Postman, 2005). This has widened the gap between advertising ...

The results of a personality test indicate a similar personality to what I expected. For instance, I do believe that I am an introvert. Based on the test I scored 5 out of 9, which indicates that I am in the 49th percentile hence an introvert. Additionally, I can relate with information regarding my level of conscientiousness achieved (6 out of 9). The personality test has only shown the weaknesses and strengths that I deal with every day. The structuring of the questions used in the test seem to bring out the qualities whether strengths or weaknesses that ...

In psychology there are three main types of parenting. They include Authoritative, Authoritarian, and the permissive parenting styles. The Authoritarian parenting style involves the parent feeling the need to control the actions of the child. The parent values highly obedience and respect and usually feels superior to the child. The child develops fear due to the harsh punishments given. Children of Authoritarian parent develop poor social skills and competences. In extreme cases the children may develop insecurities and have ant-social tendencies.
The Permissive parent has no control over the child. The parent avoids confrontation and does ...
- Considering the demand of the citizens, America has toughened its stand on the criminals and put them into prisons. However, this step has caused a different problem. The American prisons are overcrowded and the government faces the ire of judiciary as well as several human rights organization that demand a human treatment for the prisoners. An easy option before the American government is to privatize the prisons to provide the prisoners a comfortable life. The american government is exploring every option to look into the probaility of privatizing the prisons.

International and Domestic Terrorism
International terrorism usually involves violent actions, which are dangerous and harmful to human life, thereby, violation of the criminal laws as well as they occur mainly outside of the territorial jurisdiction of the U.S. On the other hand, domestic terrorism basically refers the violence that usually involve groups or individuals terrorists whose activities are directed towards the government’s people or population, however, without any foreign participation (United States, 1978). These acts entail planning, obtaining materials as well as other activities, which are directly or indirectly linked to the terrorism (Netanyahu, 1997).

Nobody is perfect. However, usually we notice flaws of other people and forget that we should come under detailed scrutiny. Personally, I do not feel that I am honest enough. I usually escape from responsibility and let others decide what should be done. I know that life depends only on my thoughts and attitude, but very often I react too emotionally and disappoint everybody. I might forget to be thankful, especially when my relatives help me. I just take it for granted and do not notice how valuable our bonds are. I think I should reconsider my behavior and ...

Judicial review of competency or reasonability in regard to defendant mens rea (mental state) at issue in case involves four general rule elements where 1) waiver of rights is determined accord to the 2) capacity of a party to plea and 2) stand trial, the criteria to 4) defense. Defendants “pleading not guilty by reason of insanity” forsake criminal responsibility in exchange for state mental health incarceration (Meyer & Weaver, 2006).
In the cases State v. Bates and State v. Stiller no assignment of incompetency should occur. If temporary insanity is determined to be in question, hospital ...
The meaning of brief varies among therapists, but there is one common aspect: it is a blanket term that incorporates a variety of psychotherapies. Some therapists focus on the current patient observable behavioral interaction, and aim to change the going system (Molnar & Shazer, 1987). This approach was engineered in response to situational limitations, as well as, patient needs (Molnar & Shazer, 1987). In practice, brief therapy has short versions of conventional and family therapies. The underpinnings of conventional and family therapies are employed but are brief. This approach is exceptionally useful if the desired therapy is unavailable or beyond the reach of ...

Private Prisons
Private prisons were banned in the Mid-20th Century because they were views as the new form of slavery. During the progressive era, the last private prison was closed down. Commercialization of Prison system was demonized by religious groups and Human rights activists. The business revived again in the 20 the century. This was as a result of the increased incarceration efforts by the criminal justice system. In order to reduce the crime rate, the courts opted to adopt tough sentencing rules. Currently, the United States of America has incarcerated over two million inmates. The phenomenon creates a situation ...

For many clinical psychology is a field that holds a lot of promise of wealth and power; you have control over a person’s mind in ways that brain surgeons do not have. My experience with my classmate; Janice, helped me realize my potential to help people especially persons who experience psychological conditions as a result of alcohol and substance abuse, both directly and indirectly. I hope to use my skills to help the youth who often bear the greatest psychological stress from social problems.

Psychological egoism: human conduct is selfishly motivated and people cannot perform actions from any other motive . It implies that psychological egoism is the practical belief that the determining motive of every action done voluntarily is a desire for a person’s own benefit. Egoist points out that a person often tries to hide the determining motives for his actions because his concealment is self-interest.

Summary and analysis of an article on decision making
Summary
Maria Lewicka indicates that people should choose the alternative with the highest sum of the products of estimated utilities and probabilities. A decision problem involves probabilities and utilities which are two important and independent variables in the decision making process. Additionally, people ascribe utilities and assess decisions using models of social cognitive (Rob & Ola, 91). How the evaluation of the decision is made is dependent on inherent factors surrounding the decision process. Such factors include how the decision is framed, its expected effects and the prevailing descriptive judgment.
In the decision making process, managers or leaders should ...
There are several theories that can be used to explain the antisocial behavior that shows the progression from juvenile to adult criminality. The subject can be said to be in connection to deviance, juvenile deviance, as well as criminal deviance. Deviance refers to certain behaviors that are contrary to social expectations or standards of conduct of a given society or a group. Juvenile deviance, on the other hand, refers to the antisocial behavior shown by the youths. These include the violation of juvenile laws as well as delinquent actions affecting the society and criminal acts. Lastly, criminal deviance can be explained ...
A successful and effective leader is one who has the potential to mould his/her behavior depending upon the needs of the situation. The cognitive evaluation theory stresses this point of determining the inner needs and desires of an individual. A leader who rates high on his cognitive abilities can be labeled as being conscientious. These leaders can clearly identify what they require and how the task is to be completed. Furthermore, the leader’s cognitive abilities allow them to bring out the best of others working with them. (Silzer)

Article 1 Attachment Theory and Adult Relationships
A-Compare and contrast this research to prior studies as described in the article. That is, according to the researchers, what makes this study unique?
Unlike other studies, this research involved testing series of theoretical predictors connecting attachments working models and their effectiveness. Specific types of caregiving of dating partners display at a stressful conflict resolution time were given a priority (Simpson et al., 2007). Upon admission, each partner had to complete an adult interview attachment after which they were video-taped during the process of their problem solving. The authors’ coordination and arrangement of every event that led to the broader ...

Privatization of Prisons
There is an emerging trend in the western countries of Privatization of prisons. Because of the huge costs that are incurred in the construction of a new correctional facility, countries such as the United States of America and Britain have opted to subcontract private prisons to cater for the rising need for space in the prison facilities. Mass incarceration has created an opportunity niche that is currently being exploited by American Business people. The privatization of prisons in the United States is caused by the punitive measures and the tough sentencing rules adopted by the criminal ...
Based on the concept of legitimization, what makes organizations such as Wal-Mart and McDonald’s legitimate?
Wal-Mart and McDonalds are among the big organizations which have gone greater heights in putting their employees on public assistance. McDonalds has McResource line that advocates that the full time employees sign up for food stamps and welfare. Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest private sector employer has the largest group of Medicaid recipients. The general argument is that these organizations are bigger, richer and hence less deserving of taxpayer subsidies. However, both McDonalds and Wal-Mart are engaging in perfectly legal behavior. Though seemingly taking advantage of the taxpayer, they are operating within the law. They draw their legitimacy through ...

The Hawthorne effect deals with the notion that any new change in a work environment will result to a positive response from the people (Jex and Britt, 2008). Small changes in the work place may cause an individual to react positively. However, the positive reaction only lasts for a short while.
An example of an experience of Hawthorne effect can be seen in new college students. The idea of joining a university may seem a big deal and may cause an individual to be motivated to study. However, once the student acclimatizes to the conditions of the university, laxity sweeps in and the ...
Both Piaget’s and Vygotsky’s theories have a common field, the cognitive development in children. Cognitive development refers to the study of development in children in parts of language learning, speech, processing information plus other brain development aspects. It compares children’s cognitive psychology from the point of view of an adult. The two theories try to explain how children develop using cognitive development.
Comparing the two theories, their similarity only lies on the fact that they both explain that social interaction is the underlying factor in cognitive development in children, but then different methods and factors are ...
Two pivotal approaches to cognitive development that challenged Piaget’s widely-known theory are Vygotsky’s sociocultural approach and the information-processing perspective. In spite of the distinction between psychogenesis and epistemogenesis, Lev Vygotsky’s and Jean Piaget’s views manage to complete each other and reach a similar conclusion—knowledge is formed within a certain social context and has a specific material (Tryphon, 1996).
Piaget proposes that, during the development of human thinking, we go through stable, predictably structured sequences of stages. The consistency and stability of these stages are undoubtedly questioned by today’s standards in psychological research (Baron 1995). For ...
There are three grand theories providing theoretical framework for studying human development: psychoanalytic theory, behaviorism and cognitive theory.
The fundamental concepts of the psychoanalytic theory are the underlying forces (inner drives, mental and emotional processes, motives) shaping the personality, behavior, thinking, attitude, decision making, etc. Central to this theory, introduced by Sigmund Freud, is a point of view that a individual in his or her development passes through specific psychosexual stages: oral, anal, phallic, latent and genital. Ericson, who also contributed to the psychoanalytic theory, offered different classification of development stages. Each stage has its unique needs, motivation drivers, challenges and relationships. According to Freud, people act from three major states of the ...

I disagree with my classmates who claim that watching television cannot make one smarter. This is because television is informative and tends to educate a person on the realities of the world. The media offer the current happenings in society. For instance watching, the episode of 24 one can integrate a lot of information. The review report will evaluate the methods and conceptual framework that the article published with the title of “Positive Psychology in Progress” discusses. I have searched the article from Google Scholar with the helping of inputting search terms “Positive psychology in healthcare”.
The article is a rather milestone in the field of motivational interviewing and psychological practice because it validates a very loud claim that modern psychology made in the recent years. They argued that psychological healing provides the basis for physical one. However, there was no scientific proof that can be produced in order to back up the value ...
Theories on personality have been variously described by psychologists. Different psychologists have proposed different theories that attempt to explain and identify the origins of personality. These theories of personality include the psychodynamic theory, humanistic model, five-factor model and the social-cognitive theory. Sigmund Freud coined the famous psychodynamics theory in relation to his psychoanalytical approach. The psychodynamics theory focuses on the interrelationship of different parts of humanity. These includes the mind, personal character, personality, or psyche in relation to the mental, motivational drives or emotional forces particularly at the unconscious level (Frick 8). The theory studies the psychological forces that ...
In life, it is not always easy to identify oneself with a particular quality or features. Despite this fact, it is easier to count on oneself than counting on the other. This is contrary to the fact that knowing yourself is one of the toughest things in this society. These features not only portray me as a person with positive personality but also brings out the negative side of me. This is sometimes referred to as being ...
There has been much speculation in regards to whether at least some, if not all of the deaths that occurred at Virginia Tech could have been preventable. One of the biggest conflicts on this topic is the lack of communication within the school about the gunman, Cho Seung Hui’s prior history of violence and mental illness. According to a New York Times article (2007), “because university officials misunderstood federal privacy laws as forbidding any exchange of a student’s mental health information, the panel’s long-awaited report concludes, they missed numerous indications of the gunman’s mental health problems” ( ...
Physical and Motor Development
Children witness substantial physical changes and an increased ability to control their bodies. Their long bones lengthen; in the arms, fingers and legs. They harden and become stronger altering their appearance. In terms of motor development, every progressive year witnesses improved control. Milestones include running, kicking balls, riding tricycles, throwing balls overhand and skating. Their motor drive ensures they practice these abilities and discover new ones. Their health gets impaired with reduced sleep and poor eating habits. They do not sleep as recommended and are at risk of health problems due to obesity. In order to compensate for energy ...
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), which at times is simply termed as a solution focused therapy refers to a form of therapy that is not only goal directed, but also collaborative; this is orchestrated by analyzing the response of clients to a set of precisely designed questions (Bannink, 2007). This therapy explores the history and etiology of clients’ problems and seeks to understand what these clients intend to achieve. Therapists who use this approach concentrate on the present and the future. The past is only examined to understand the origin of the client’s problem.
However, therapists who use this approach are shifting ...
The big five traits have a remarkable universality aspect. Studies focusing on people across different cultures indicate that these dimensions are accurately applicable in describing personality. With this research, psychologists believe that the character dimensions share universality and have biological origins (Ashcraft, 2011). It is proposed that the evolutionary explanation for core personality characteristics suggests that the personality characteristics are representative of the important qualities shaping the social landscape.
Behavior involves interaction between the underlying character of a person and the situational variables. Situations that people find them in have a major role in the way they react. In most cases, individuals ...
There can be many reasons for and importance of developing skills when it comes to detecting deceit. Such skills can prove to be useful in the field of criminal justice and law enforcement. Professionals who work in these fields often engage in interviews and interrogations with suspects, witnesses, and other key persons involved in a subject incident, and making sure that every key person is telling the truth is often vital to the process of solving cases or even in gathering information in a surveillance operation.
Detecting deception can be considered both a science and an art. There are many tricks and ...

The development of criminal profiling is very important in crime investigations. It is defined as a behavioral tool that is used in investigations. Investigators, use the criminal profile in order for many reasons. Many criminals have the tendency of committing crimes and trying to run away from the authority. However, when a criminal profile it developed, it helps the authority is able to start their investigations and if carefully carried out, the ...
The problem solving process shift thinking from emotion based to the fact based at it requires critical thinking. The problem solving process involves analysis of facts as well as generation and organization of ideas to solve problems. Emotion based thinking does not bring viable solutions of problems as it cannot draw inferences or evaluate arguments. This establishes the differences between facts based thinking from other aspects of thinking such as emotion based and creative thinking. Fact based thinking when done well guide the establishment of beliefs and impacts on the behaviors and actions of individuals to arrive at solutions ...

Abstract
Virtues are inherent among people. Virtues are positive qualities possessed by every individual and that which makes the person morally upright. The virtues that people possess tend to impact their cognitive, emotional, and behavioural well-being. This paper presents three of my top virtues namely honesty, self-regulation, and humility. The three virtues are examined based on their impacts on cognitive, emotional, and behavioural health.
Value refers to a human’s ability to sense whether happenings in the environment are relatively desirable (Dolan, 2002, 1191). Dolan (2002) describes emotion as something that is apparent in what people remember and notice but that ...
Perhaps one of the more interesting elements of the plays of William Shakespeare is that his romances typically do not progress as one might expect. Instead, he uses peculiar situations, such as identical twins falling in love in the same city, fairies casting spells on mortals, and women falling in love with women dressed as men. Appropriately, his comedy The Taming of the Shrew is no different. In this play, Petruchio tries to woo and tame the outspoken and domineering Katharina so that Lucentio or one of the other suitors might be able to marry her younger sister Bianca. ...
According to Slagter and Georgopoulou (2013), “attentional blink refers to impairment in detecting the second of two target stimuli presented in close succession in a rapid system of distracters”. People will have problems in identifying the second stimuli when it comes after the first stimuli within 200-500ms (Slagter and Georgopoulou, 2013). Different reasons have been provided for this condition such as the brain having inadequate capacity to process information in the working memory (Slagter and Georgopoulou, 2013). Additionally, the authors note, “attentional blink has been attributed with the dysfunctional gating of information to working memory rather than the ...
Language psychology is a unit that involves the study of the processes in development of words and expressions used in making a speech. This sub-discipline can be categorized into cognitive psychology and neuroscience of the human brain. It explains the relationship and interactions that exist between memory and language formation by an individual. This is significant for a person in communicating and conversing with others. Information is stored and retrieved from the memory element, which is vital in understanding what has been said and what is useful in a discussion. The adaptation of an efficient language to pass information is a process that an ...
I think, Siddhartha Gautama’s quest to find enlightenment is not a question of noble action or sacred call, but, it is the understanding of one’s convictions. Siddhartha Gautama left everything he had for the sake of humanity and for the betterment of humanity. The great one left his family in good hands and with great wealth. Leaving one’s family might be considered bad in today’s culture, but, the great one sacrificed his family and his preaching lead to the happiness of many families for thousands of years.

Role of parents in the social and emotional development of children
The availability of parents in close proximity to their children especially in the initial stages of their growth is crucial to the children’s social and emotional growth. Children have the tendency to form strong emotions on their feelings and when they are convinced of an aspect it is extremely hard to make them think otherwise. If a child grew up in an environment of abuses and mockery, it becomes hard to convince such a child of self appreciation and recognition of others. This is because they have not grown up in such environments and all they know are negative sentiments from ...
Treatment of abnormal behavior and culture
Many ways of treating abnormal behavior and culture exist, and they vary from time to time-they are not static so as to remain relevant with time. A psychological intervention is one of the preferred ways. This treatment is performed through psychotherapy that broadly refers to the method of curing that emphasizes an unequivocal focus on the self. Another recognized and commonly used intervention is the cognitive behavioral treatment that emphasizes on the improvement of strategies for training cognitive skills. It relies on this assumption that by changing our thinking, we can change our behaviors, and subordinate versa. These interventions ...

Many people who suffer from a substance addiction also suffer from a mental health problem at the same time and the difficulties they are faced with far outweigh the effects of either alone. Often, only one of the two problems is identified and that depends on the primary problems treated where the diagnosis is given and which problem is most prominent. When one of the problems is severe it may eclipse the other problems the individual is suffering from.
Although one problem may be considered primary and the rest secondary, this does not mean that the individual isn’t experiencing serious ...
Economics of motivation is a concept that is associated with the costs that must be met and availability of the required resources to cover these costs for a motivated behavior to happen. Arguably, there are five categories of motivation costs. The first cost is the response cost, which is related to the behavior that should be made in order to realize a goal. Second is the time required to work on achieving a goal. It would take a given span of time before the anticipated goal is realized. The third cost is the physical energy, which is the amount of calories that is spent on ...
Systemic therapy, according to McDaniel (1992), seeks to address issues affecting groups of people in relationships, but not individuals. It deals with the interactional dynamics and patterns of groups. The roots of systemic therapy are anchored in family therapy. Family therapy as Bowlby (1949) argues, helps to resolve the tension that may exist among different members of the family.
As such, total family structure is prioritized. Just like family therapy, systemic therapy helps people to live together and at the same time reduce tensions that could be driving them apart. This therapy does not perceive problems analytically but, practically. ...
This paper discusses the strengths of family therapy and why I would use it in practice.
Family therapy, according to Broderick and Schrader (1991), refers to a branch of psychotherapy that primarily works with couples in intimate relationships and families in a bid to nurture change and development.
This therapy is anchored on family relationships, which is regarded as the foundation of psychological health. Family therapy views change as systems of interaction among members of the same family. Proponents of this therapy posit that irrespective of the origin of the problem, whether it is a familial or individual issue, clients benefit when their families are involved in seeking solutions. As such, family of the clients is actively involved ...
While every child will grow and develop and his or her unique pace, some lags in meeting the milestones of the respective stages could be red flags for developmental delays. Developmental delays in infants and young children are said to have occurred when the infant or child experiences a significant delay in showing the milestones. Such delays are caused by such factors as genetics, fragile X syndrome, fatal alcohol consumption by pregnant mothers, and such other things as prenatal stress and depression. This paper endeavors to explain various aspects of delays in language, motor, emotional and social, vision and cognitive ...
Strict liability and the insanity defense share some very interesting and ironic components. Strict liability penalizes for “lack of thought or reason” while the insanity defense excuses this “lack of thought or reason.” The law operates quite strangely at times. In regards to the insanity defense, I firmly believe that it should be eliminated because it often excuses the criminal act and can be used as a loophole.
In a criminal case, the act and consequence should be the primary concerns, especially when considering violent crimes or crimes that harm individuals in other ways. However, when the insanity defense ...
Learning strategies are the operations that a learner utilizes to facilitate the acquiring, storing, retrieving and using the information. In short, learning strategies are the particular actions that a learner may take to make his or her learning process easier. There are five strategies for learning TESOL; cognitive strategies, mnemonic strategies, metacognitive strategies, effective strategies and finally social strategies.
The cognitive strategies allow learners to learn by making associations between the new information and the already known information. They also facilitate the mental restructuring of information. Examples of such learning include; analyzing, guessing when relying on the context, taking systematic notes, ...
1) Experiential cognition refers to activities we are skilled at which we can do without having to think, given our innate experience with them. Reflective cognition takes time and effort, as people have to actively think about their actions in order to accomplish them. This latter one is better for good academic performance, as reflective cognition can deal with more complicated problems, and is essentially the process by which we learn new things. 2) The two criteria for critical thinking are 1) the existing skills to generate and process beliefs and information, and
2) the ability to use those ...
There are multiple websites that aim to teach students about electrocardiograms (ECG/EKGs). One website that was quite effective is the one build by a paramedic, Aaron Segal (n.d.). One positive attribute of this site was the use of analogies and humor. Although the toilet analogy for the description of absolute and relative refractory period might be considered by some to be in poor taste, it is certainly easy to remember (Segal, n.d., Cardiac contraction and ECG). From this site I learned basic information about ECGs including how to read a normal one, the steps of interpreting an ECG, and some examples ...

The theory of connectionism seeks to explain the human intellectual activities with the aid of artificial neural networks which are also called neural nets or networks. These neural networks are simply models of the brain that are made up of larger units. They help with weights that are used to measure the connections between units. Connectionism offers an alternative approach to the classical theory of the mind and philosophers are interested in connectionism because through it it is easier to learn skills such as reading and face recognition.
Connectionism offers the principle of explaining how mental phenomena can be ...

Culture has a great influence on the development of our self-identity. Various factors that include; tightness, complexity and individualism versus collectivism found in culture, influence a person’s personality traits. Individualistic cultures emphasize independence, development of self-goals and competitiveness (Matsumoto, 2001). Collectivistic cultures, require an individual to belong to a certain group. Group goals are the priority and one’s behavior is expected to conform to what is acceptable in the group. Collectivist cultures embrace working together whereas in individualistic cultures individuals are self-reliant. A lot of studies suggest that the big 5 personality trait emerge from a variety of cultures.
