Terrorism is the continual use of violence or the threat to commit violence acts so as to achieve ideological, political or religious aims. Terrorism is amongst the major threats of the world and society and it is illegal under most countries. Terrorism is also considered as a heinous war crime as it targets mostly civilians through the use of combatants while military personnel may also be attacked as a result of terror activities. Political organizations have practiced terrorism worldwide to act as a military wing to their political ideologies and to strike fear among the residents of the areas in which they are based. Terrorism thrives on inflicting fear to the civilians to help achieve their objectives.
Causes of terrorism include ethno nationalism which is the need for groups or sections of the population to refrain from government or create a state of their own liking. This was mainly evident in the 20th century as regions attempted to gain independence from certain states that led to the creation of such groups which used military actions to commit terror attacks. Another cause of terrorism is discrimination as the diaspora population feels alienated leading to terror activities. This leads to the individuals moving from poorer states to better states as they are easily swayed through terrorist ideologies to commit crimes. Religion though not a cause is wrongly misinterpreted by individuals for selfish aims and driving of the terror networks activities.
Congress passed the patriot act after the 9/11 terror attacks to help strengthen the nation against future terror attacks. The law mainly centered on the strengthening of the nation’s surveillance system. Another change was allowing of the FBI to conduct search orders against any individuals that are considered to be involved in terror activities. The president’s administration has also tightened the restrictions on visa and travel papers for dual citizens from countries that have a high rate of terror activities that includes Iraq, Iran, and Syria.
