` His sudden arrival stirred the village. The village nurse admitted that they had not encountered such even in their big books. The prophets said it was the sign of the end of the world. Even the witch doctors, the dying breed, made their own input. They called it the invasion of the dead. Tongoona tried to be honest with the crowd. Promising them that he meant well. He was just on one of the few missions that inhabitants of his galaxy were going to embark on in the future. An inhabitant of one of the black holes, surely no one cared about the dark star of Marabi. They were running out of some of the precious elements that made for immortality possible. There was no way to explain the elements, their nature and how the village would help. It is reported that the government was informed about this unusual occurrence but decided to ignore it as one of the many mysteries associated with these villages. They were not ready to waste resources in investigating and taking care of village petty mysteries.
It was because of Tari that Tongoona was caught. That little goat milking sad creature. He was illegally prospecting for the elements behind the small hill next to the village when he noticed her. He had seen humans before. This one was different. Was it in distress, was it happy. They were told not to mix or to be seen by any humans. They were supposed to stick to the mission - find the element and board the ship back home. He abandoned the prospecting and watched. She was talking, kicking bushes, throwing stones and shouting at the creatures she was taking care of. She looked different from the jovial creatures he had seen before. They were given a lecture before the mission. The earth had millions of species and they were to be careful of one in particular- the human.
While Tongoona was marvelling at Tari, she was pre-occupied with her own thoughts and demons. She could hear voices coming out of all sides. She looked around and there was no one in sight, just her and the eight goats. She realized that the many voices were coming out of her. Was she possessed, was she getting insane. She was afraid but more so angry. No she wasn't angry at the goats, not even at Auntie Connie. She was startled by her own voice. It was drained. Connie had redrawn the lunch charter. The proposition was bizarre. The amount of how much she ate was going to be decided upon depending on how much the goats had had. There was no way to really tell how much the goats had had. "How can you sit down and eat when the goats are not fed" inquired Connie with a piercing and angry voice. "Come back when they are all full and you can have your own share" She retorted. It was not Connie’s fault. Since Masango left, she had turned out to be venomous, with instant bouts of unprovoked anger. She had forcibly been made the headmen and was in charge of the vile village. The villagers said that she was fair and just. Tari thought the village was insincere.
Before the drafting of the charter, Tari had wondered what could happen if she had walked home for lunch before the mere sign of bulging stomachs that would amount to evidence that she actually did her work. Convincing Connie that one had fulfilled their duty without her own personal judgment was fruitless, so Tari moved towards the goats that were resting under the huge Mopani tree, she made some noises and the goats stood up. She directed them towards the area she thought she could get the richest pastures, that way they would all get full quickly and she can rush back home to eat.
Dusk came and she wasn’t sure if the goats had had enough to eat. She could not gauge, so she wandered around the grazing area until she got to a nhengeni shrub. She collected a handful of the yellow sour fruit and placed them in her folded dress. It was getting really dark and she decided to take the goats to their pen. It was dark and Connie was not going to be able to see if the goats were full or not. Since it was dark all the goats went straight into the pen without any trouble. The pen was at behind the house. As she was placing the last log on the pen opening she saw a human figure approaching. No it wasn’t human, she was sure of that. The ending day had drained her enervated her making it impossible for even fear to grip her. The purple shining thing kept on walking towards her. She held the one log firm in her hand. She couldn’t take pranks especially after going through one hell of a day without enough nourishment. Whoever was behind this prank was surely going to be sorry if they got any closer and tried anything funny.
The green-purple object kept on moving towards her. Whoever you are I will strike of you get any closer. There was no response. She could tell that whatever the purple thing was, it couldn’t hear her and was not going to back away.
The purple thing was Tarich, whose fascination had taking him right to the edge of the village. It took him to the headman’s kraal. While Tari was busy fighting the demon in her eyes. Machena laid at the back of the pen with her eyes half-closed. She shook her head chasing away the annoying flies. She had spent the day annoyed. It was the flippancy and unforgivable playfulness of the other baby goats that annoyed her. Most of all it was Tari who constantly foiled Machena’s attempts at seeking solitude behind the thorn bushes. Tari threw stones and one got close and lashed Machena on one of her hind legs. The bitterness grew and she wished for a miracle. There was need for a revolution. A goat revolution to break away from the human, even its destruction. The smug on the human face was unbearable. She hated the name Machena too. She was not even a white goat. Just a few spots of white made Tari think she was white.
It was on one of her missions of seeking sanctuary away from the head that she met Tongoona. Tirach was not a cow, a chicken, a goat or a donkey. He wasn't even human. The most fascinating thing was that Tirach spoke the goat language. She talked to him about the goat revolution. He listened attentively. Machena’s accusations against Tari and other humans were unbelievable. He had watched Tari and without even talking to her, he had become fond of her. He wanted to save her. To do something for her. Now here was Machena with these revelations. Machena was also a pretty goat, eloquent, intelligent and self-assured.
