While Alessandro was more or less convinced about the benefits of replacing the earlier incandescent with a CFL, Judy and Carmela’s arguments have put him in a bind. It is true that CFLs can be highly energy efficient and save cost as well as greenhouse emissions and heating.
On the other hand, the usability, electronics, disposal etc. of CFLs can be tricky and need to be handled very carefully. Judy is correct in the fact that CFLs require a lot more energy in manufacturing and that regular on and off can reduce its life, thus nullifying the cost savings over the longer term. Carmela too is correct regarding potential exposure to mercury.
Some information which is not mentioned in the case is that the traditional light dimming controls do not work with CFLs, which means that they will continue to run at full brightness even when it is not required.
Also, in low temperatures, CFLs may take a lot of time to heat and glow, which can be tedious in some regions. In addition, it has now been well documented that new generation LEDs are even more efficient than CFLs and do not pose the above problems associated with CFLs.
It is true that using some CFLs may provide cost savings and energy efficiency currently, but when newer LEDs are more popular, switching to LEDs from incandescent makes more sense than shifting to CFLs.
So Alessandro might not be wrong in trying CFL this one time to judge the advantages of using a CFL, however, in the long term it may not be a good idea to shift to CFLs. Instead other better alternatives are available and are under research.
