Zika virus is one of the dangers that people face. The virus is caused by Aedes mosquitos. Based on the article there are various techniques that can be used to deal with the Aedes mosquitos. There are several stakeholders who are involved in making decisions on the best strategy to deal with Zika virus causing organism. The decision made by Food and Drug Administration seem to be right based on the nature of the situation. FDA should not have made the decision they did because of the risks posed by the Zika virus. The pubic play a crucial role in decision making, but FDA should have made the final approval to use the genetically modified mosquitos in dealing with Zika virus. Waiting for public opinions may delay the process, which may adversely affect the society. The Zika virus may spread faster even before FDA makes the final decision. In such a situation, what matters most is the speed in dealing with the Aedes mosquitos. The decision to use genetically modified mosquitos is right, but the final approval should be made swiftly. Based on the article FDA and Intrexon company assert that the mosquitos are environmentally friendly and do not harm people (Pollack, 2016). Also, the traditional methods have proved to be ineffective; hence, the approval of genetically modified mosquitos in the fight against Zika virus is justified.
Based on the nature of the issue FDA is not the best agency to deal with the risks associated with the use of genetically modified mosquitos. This is because the main focus of the strategy is the ecological effects. The agencies that should take control is Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Health Organization, and Environmental Protection Agency. His is because the focus is not only dealing with Zika virus but ensuring that environmental sustainability and health is guaranteed (Pollack, 2016). Environmental protection agency will ascertain the environmental and health impacts of genetically modified mosquitos to the environment and human health.
