Sofna College started as a high school in 1923, with a small population of 36 pupils, and it has developed gradually through various school managements into international school. Despite of the school’s prosperity, it has also faced serious challenges which has made the school to shrink and hence lower the school standards. Some of the problems are internal (within the school itself) while other problems are external (factors outside the school) and these factors have significantly contributed to the current low standards of the college. Some of the recommendations and possible solutions to such problems which lower the standards of Sofna College are discussed below:
First and foremost, the college should have well qualified management team with good managerial qualities. The head of the school should be in good relation with the staff, students and the outsiders. This will call for respect and understanding among themselves to enable them implement good laws and projects for the prosperity of the college. Good relation among the three (administration, students and the outsiders) will give each room for full participation by giving out their suggestions and complains as well as sharing the new ideas for the prosperity of the college.
Secondly, the school management should come up with a proper school fee structure which is fair and affordable to most of the parents in various economic classes. This will enable parents from the different economic classes who are yearning to provide their children with quality education to enroll their children in Sofna College since they can afford the fee. The reduction of fee to the affordable amount will attract many students and this will curb the problem of population decrease. As a result the population of the students will increase, this is very vital since the presence of students is the fundamental business and without them, the school is likely to be closed and calls for the fall of all other departments and businesses carried out within the college.
The financial problem is basically solved when the management is in a position to account for every cent used as expenditure as well as coming up with other external sources of money other than the school fee itself. Sofna College in its position as an international school through good management should restore a trust with potential financial institutions, the government and even individuals to give the college some good amount of money either as donation or as a loan with fair interest rate to enable the school finance its projects to enhance its developments. The management can as well invest into some profitable business to earn more money. This will enable the school to settle its debts, provide employment opportunities to the community and also improve the infrastructure of the school.
Besides those, the administration should also involve the alumni of the college who are in various positions in their respective job places in generation of the funds and development. The college can involve them even through fund raising or assigning them their own project after a serious discourse between the alumni group and the administration is held. The alumni can even provide sponsorship and scholarships to some of the bright and needy students, and award the performing students to encourage hard work and academic competition platform in the college to improve the academic standards. The alumni group can also provide books, furniture, build new classrooms and other buildings and even refurbish the old buildings to beautify the school. All these are possible when the alumni are incorporated into the system and their contribution highly appreciated.
Furthermore, the head of the college should recruit both qualified staff and non-staff. The highly trained professionals when motivated and given a conducive environment will use their experience to truly deliver their services. Both the staff and non-staff should be highly incorporated into the system and should be given chance to contribute accordingly where necessary. The relationship between the students, staff and non-staff should be superb to enable sharing of ideas among them. The staffs should be motivated accordingly through rewarding them where necessary, organizing them training facilities to enhance their skills and experience, provide them with better housing facilities, maintaining proper hygiene and taking them for a retreat. This will create an environment of hard work, commitment and unity in the college thus better performance and standards of the school.
Nevertheless, the administration should always confirm the recent ministry recommendations and implement them as soon as possible. This helps the school to be up-dated with the correct curriculum which provides the students with the required skills for the white collar jobs and the technical knowledge. This calls for the up-dating of the mission and vision of the college to suite the curriculum provided by the ministry which has been witnessed to be the same in Sofna College since 1996. The college should also work hand in hand with the government through the ministry when in need of the government assistance in various aspects such as security, funding various projects, providing infrastructure like roads and so many others.
In addition, for the prosperity and high standards, the college through its administration should invest seriously in sports such as football, rugby, athletics, volley ball, hand ball, net ball, tennis, hockey to mention but a few. Sports encourage unity among students, hard work and commitment among students. Through winning various titles and trophies, it helps to build the reputation of the school and it also provides employment opportunities to the youths as sports men aces and also provide scholarships to the students who are doing well in sports.
In conclusion, to mention but a few, the points discussed above, are some of the recommendations and the solutions to some of the challenges facing not only Sofna College but also affecting other learning institutions globally. When the suggestions are given a serious approach and implemented accordingly by the relevant authorities and departments, our learning institutions will improve their standards in all aspects such as academics, sports, health, and various infrastructure thus generating skillful professionals to the society.
