Domestic terrorism entails those acts of terrorism staged within the borders of a country whereas international terrorism has the terrorism activities carried out by terrorists across borders and a Al-Qaeda is one example of groups doing international terrorism.
Since terrorism is an extreme evil that comes about with much havoc to the affected country, extreme measures need to be taken. U.S. is known to take some of the most drastic measures in dealing and responding to terrorism may it be domestic or international. There a numerous ways to frustrate terrorist, the first way may be the subjecting of the captured terrorist to forced interrogations. The second way may involve holding the detainees for long periods without charges and even denying them access to legal representation. The third way may be to jail detainees for longer durations under restrictive condition, and that may even involve putting them under solitary confinement (Raphael 185).
Difficult trade-offs occur when a compromise has to be reached because of some adverse conditions between the terrorists and the nation. The nation may be making an effort to protect its citizens from dehumanizing conditions or genocide. The government may also be looking out for the well-being of the innocent persons even in the terrorists’ mother countries. A perfect example is the case about the U.S. freezing Iran. The U.S. thought that Iran’s acquisition of nuclear weapons posed danger to the security of the U.S and the international frontiers. The negotiators on the U.S side took to de-linking the nuclear issue from the other issues that mattered (Raphael 115).
It is important to look into both the advantages and disadvantages associated with the U.S. DHS reorganization. The first advantage is that it became much easier for the U.S. government to ensure the safety and security of its citizens. The Department of Homeland Security is a large department band comprising of a number of components. The components include nuclear detection, health affairs, border protection, immigration, and transportation security. These components from the outlook show that the re-organization targeted much more than providing citizens with security. Reorganization of this department has made it easy to tie together several intelligence agencies as well as give a boost to the communication between the operating bodies, and that is definitely a major obstacle to terrorism (Raphael 145).
Many people may observe impediment to their privacy during the checks at airports as a major disadvantage. Others may think that the security checks at airports and other places eat much into their time and as a result inconveniencing them a great deal. One thing everyone needs to do is prioritize safety. It is better to stay safe (Raphael, 166).
