The two articles in context, one penned by Donna Laframboise, titled “Roll Back the Red Carpet for Boys” and the other written by Stevie Cameron, titled “Our Daughter, Ourselves”, have two very different perspectives to the issue of gender equality and feminism. In my view, a close scrutiny of the respective writings would enable one to understand how the articles explore two very different avenues of gender discrimination citing proper examples and subjective arguments. According to my analysis, while Donna Laframboise focuses on the fact that the boys find themselves in oblivion of the society while there is outcry for feminism and rights and equality for women, the other article points to the innate nature of the patriarchal society to discriminate against the females, thereby widening the gender gap.
In my view, both the articles appeal to the emotions of the avid readers with subjective descriptions of the situations that males and females have to face in the society. The first article emphasizes on the pitiable condition of boys as they have to face the onus of the society. It is my point of view that they are expected to be strong and privileged in comparison to the females. However, they are the ones who are on the receiving end in the present day scenario as per the opinion of Donna Laframboise. The author points to the fact that feminism has come to establish that females are subjugated while males are privileged. In my opinion, this makes the discriminatory acts and woes faced by the males remain in sheer oblivion. In contrast, Stevie Cameron points to the fact that the society establishes the gender discrimination via the societal influences. The article shows how the girls’ confidence gets broken with time when they face the impediments in their lives. Thus, as per my analysis, the two articles point to two very different pictures that complicate the issue of gender equality.
In my point of view, the two authors substantiate their respective claims with evidences. The author of the first article opines that during the age of 15 to 24 years, boys commit suicides as many as five times in comparison to females. This works to show the immense vulnerability and problems in the lives of the males in comparison to the females. On the other hand, Stevie Cameron points to the violence in Montreal where the females were on the receiving end. If I am to analyze, this works as evidence for the fact that women are seen as inferior and are subordinated by the patriarchal society. As such, the two articles provide opposing evidences to establish their respective stands.
It has to be comprehended that the articles endeavor to prove that feminism is a paradoxical concept as the truth remains that boys and girls are not treated equally in the society. I have comprehended that while feminism is truly needed in today’s time to uproot discrimination between the sexes, the males should not be pushed toward oblivion when it comes to their problems and issues. Feminism aims to establish a society where men and women are equal. Hence, a thorough reading of the two texts enables me to have a holistic understanding of the two sides of the matter and makes one realize the intricate issues related to discriminatory practices in the world society in the present times.
It would be correct to conclude by saying that feminism is a complex concept which needs to be understood. One should aim to contribute toward a society that has a uniform perspective for both the sexes. While male domination should not be tolerated, men should also not be cornered in any way. On the other hand, females too should be given their due importance and respect in the society. The two articles in context work to enhance the knowledge about attitudes of the society toward the sexes and how there needs to be massive transformation in the perspective of the individual and the society.
