Thesis reading 1: the characters depict the loneliness they feel after they have lost love and all meaning of love, each action they do in their daily life tries to fill that hole which only leads to more misery.
Thesis reading 2: the use of two different setting in the film is a depiction that emotion is the same to all people even those of different status, the outcomes of the feelings are the same.
Question
Reading 1: what is the director of the film trying to depict and what is the purpose of each character when it comes to unveiling matters of emotion in their daily life? While doing this, try to bring emphasis to the different environment portrayed by the director.
Reading 2: What is the setting the director used to film the movie and describe the setting in the each of the narratives in the movie? The question requires that you have a geographical output regarding the film precisely the surroundings, and how the director used them to portray the characters or bring the movie to life while describing the central theme.
The most striking scene is Lin’s walk after the bar scheme (Brunette and Kar-wai 44). It is personally significant because her walk shows how optimistic she is about the day and she is happy as if the looking around the city just indicates that she is capable of fulfilling her dreams. It is the same feeling I have when walking in a beautiful part of the area where the air is serene, people are busy and seem as if they have no care in the world.
The scene has only focused on one character, and she was not having a conversation with anyone. The memorable part of the scene is the Chungking Mansion. It is a tourist attraction with popular hotels and shopping centers. It even shows hidden part of the mansion that has many suites (Huang 132). The scene did remind me of something, many scenes in other movies done in Hong Kong. It was not shocking due to the reason that the area is beautiful and attraction, most movies like to depict the culture and tradition of the country, specifically the region that produces the film.
The film has two narratives, in the other narrative; the memorable scene was the part where Fay jumps out of the closet. The reasons to why it was capturing are that it was funny and it had a personal relevance. The scene shows Fay doing the actions of the policeman’ previous girlfriend; she rearranges the house removes all forms of memories then goes and hides in the closet to surprise the police officer (Brunette and Kar-wai 48). It was an act that the other girlfriend did, the familiarity of it just made them look too similar in the eyes of the police officer.
The whole scene was memorable, and there were two characters involved, Fay and police officer 223 (Brunette and Kar-wai 44). They were talking about how Fay scared the police officer and asking the question as to why she was hiding in the closet. The scene did remind me of many Jackie Chan movies scenes filled with entertaining comedy. The scene was not shocking at all.
Joining the two reading materials as research, the topic for the study will be, the use of geographical setting to assist characters to bring out a theme of the film. The subject combines researches from Huang regarding matters of geographical surrounding in the movie and Brunette, who talks about the emotion and action of the characters that defines the theme of the film.
