The university of South Alabama provides students with an opportunity to visit Symphony Orchestra and enjoy well-performed classical music concert. This month, on April 7, the University of South Alabama Symphony Orchestra, directed by Dr. Robert Seebacher, presented its Spring concert. The series of concerts included works by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Weber and Hindemith. This concert featured the University Concert Choir under the direction of Dr. Laura Moore, Dr. Jasmin Arakawa on piano, and six vocal soloists as well: Dr. Thomas Rowell, tenor, Dr. Patrick Jacobs, baritone, and four student soloists: Elizabeth Bemis, soprano, Kate Frazier, soprano, Brianna Smith, alto, and Myles Garver, tenor.
The musical performance is conducted every year and this spring, Symphony Orchestra is giving their seventy-second concert. The Orchestra opened their performance with Beethoven's famous Fantasia for Piano, Choir, and Orchestra. Alabama Symphony Orchestra disposes of concerts for all musical tastes. The rendition was impeccable and very impressive due to thorough planning and conduction, which enriched the ensemble. To be able to like classic music, there is no need to be an expert.
Symphony Orchestra is a large collective of musicians to perform classical music. The main characteristics for Orchestra were formed in the early era of the Viennese classics with the emergence of a new genre that was known as a classical symphony. Later, any music of the instrumental composition was called “Symphony”. The basis of the symphony orchestra consists of four main groups of instruments: bowed strings (violin, viola, cello), woodwind (flutes, reed pipes), brass, and percussion (drums) instruments. In some cases, the orchestra included other instruments such as harp and piano, organ, celesta, harpsichord. To enjoy the classical music, however, it is not necessarily to learn all about these instruments, because orchestra performance is not about one instrument in particular but a collective complex of the sounds. Symphony Orchestra was created with the aim to reach the ear of the listener and ensure the strong blend of a tune. Huge orchestra performance can include up to one hundred ten musicians, but local concerts gather auditoria in smaller halls; therefore the number of musicians are usually less than sixty. During the history of symphony orchestra’s formation, there were many options for musicians location. Nowadays, there is a special principle of arrangement. For instance, I noticed that all homogeneous instruments are brought together in one line or a group. This helps musicians to hear each other in cooperative play and to create a compact and consistent sound for each orchestral group. And, of course, all of the musicians should be able to see the conductor.
I really enjoyed the opportunity to listen to Symphony Orchestra because it fulfilled me with energy and realised the stress. No wonder that scientists say classical music helps to relax and focus on something important. Before, I have never heard The Symphony No. 9 From the New World composed by Antonin Dvorak. At the beginning, I did not like it but the more I listened, the more I enjoyed and at the end, it turned out to be a very strong piece of musical composition. I know that there are a lot of young people who have a prejudice about the orchestra and therefore, do not visit such performances. However, I found it very powerful and thought-provoking part of musical art and I would recommend everyone to attend such performance.
