The Challenges of Working Women
Nowadays, we consider women as the equal citizens of the country who have the rights to vote, but, unfortunately, it was not always the same. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the women were only partially citizens as they had no tight to vote, so they had to work on the farms and conduct only the hard work which can hardly be called feminine. Even though women are the weak part of the humanity, they had to work really hard and fight for their rights and earning the respect of the manhood society.
The women that were working on the farm had plenty of duties, except of the traditional bearing the children and keeping their husbands happy. They had to take up the whole farm without being recognized as a meaningful member of society. Except of the working on the farms, the main duties of women were to nurse the children and teach them.
We may justify the fact that men have not been allowing women to vote because they believed that they had too much on their minds, but that would not be true and slightly exaggerated. The idea of voting women did not occur in anyone`s mind because they simply did not consider women as smart and intelligent human beings that can think and act in the way of changing the society and influencing the important matters.
There were plenty of opinions, whether the women should have had the right to vote or not. But the important thing is that no one believed that women can make any difference in this cruel and violent world. That is why they had to step up and fight for their rights.
Solutions for Working Women
As mentioned by the famous suffragist and women rights fighter Rose Schneiderman, a real worker women needs not only a bread, but a flower (Orleck). These words may be interpreted in many ways, but we believe that their true meaning is that each woman should be treated appropriately at least having equal rights with the men. Since all of the working women have plenty of responsibilities and duties, they are as well entitled to a much wider variety of the human rights that are guaranteed to her by the constitution.
In their fight for getting their legal rights, women had to use many of the famous actions such as strikes, incarcerations, domestic terrorism and damaging of the anti women politicians` property or even hunger strikes. All these strategies demonstrate the great desire to be accounted for something bigger in this world than giving the birth to the child and teaching it.
The flower is more than just an object that smells good and brings women some joy. It is a symbol for some things that goes beyond the women`s rights and is concerned with their possibilities to realize themselves as it was very hard to do in the society of that time. There was no possibility to study and acquire some education for an ordinary woman from the farm as the society would just make fun of her.
Nevertheless, we can observe and even enjoy the social evolution as the modern society approve the intelligent women who are willing to vote, to change the life of people in a better way.
