A $20million book deal, speaking deals with Ari Emmanuel and a half billion dollar library - what Obama can look forward to in his retirement- By Hannah Parry (Daily Mail Online).
This is an article that speaks about the President Obama’s retirement plans. Following the election of President Elect Donald Trump as the 45th US president in 2016, the time come for the outgoing President Barrack Obama to vacate the White and he will do so on Friday, January, 20, 2017 as the writer puts it in the article. The writer has employed various elements of the 5W’s and H in the article and this makes the article complete and very credible.
Who: When answering the question, the article is talking about the out-going US President Barrack Obama as the subject. The article starts like this: “President Obama’s presidential terms are close to its end but he has no” (Parry Pg.1).
What: This attribute here seeks to be answered with a response that would denote the event that is taking place. In this case, the answer is the President Obama’s retirement that has come close it is implementation. There are other issues in the article that may be used to answer the ‘what’ question as well. They include the fact that Obama family is planning various functions that will occupy their time after serving the nation.
Where: This seeks to reveal the destination of President Obama after the retirement. In this case, the article gives a response that the family will move to their Kalorama home in Washington D.C. before moving to their other new home (Parry Pg.3).
Why: This part is about the explanation or the answer to provide the explanations on why something is the way it is. This has not been explained so much in the article but its meaning is implied. By mentioning the inauguration of the President Elect Donald Trump, such is sufficient evidence that can explain that President Obama’s term has run out. In addition, the Mr Obama will be engaged in other duties like giving speeches and writing a book in order to ensure that his time is occupied while in retirement.
How: This can be about answered in reference to the manner in which the actions have been undertaken. In this case, the writer answers this question through the explanations of how President Obama has planned his retirement. Reported activities include taking his family for vacation, building a library, writing a book and giving speeches.
The news story was been done by Hannah Parry on January 16, 2017 and was been published by the Daily Mail Online. The reader needs to understand that President Obama will officially vacate the office on Friday January 20 and that every retiring president must have a retirement plan. This story has been reported previously. A writer known as Dr Stefan Grobe once covered it for Euronews in an article that was titled: “Vacation, new book and staying involved: Obama’s retirement plans”. It was about vacation, the library building plan as well as the book to be written and promoted. (Stefan Pg. 1&2). The same subjects were mentioned but not deeply as they have been mentioned in the discussed article.
The Head line only has the ‘who’ part of the 5W’s. The news values in the headline can be traced from the timeliness of the article and the way the retirement is going to be executed. The ‘how’ aspect of the lead makes it to have more value. The story has the fact information lead because what may have been given is more of generation actual information. The lead has the “who” aspect and it contains timeliness and it is of human interest because the subject is the out-going president. In this article, there is no nut graph but it may be considered necessary because it is pertinent in explaining the importance the meaning of the article.
There are 3 direct quotations in the article which are direct attributions that make the story to be much more credible. Example include: 'And it’s going to be good work, because there are a lot of good partners in this room. And I am so looking forward to really diving in,' she added (Parry Pg.4). They add credibility to the story. Attributions are present in the article and such can be depicted by words such as “she added”. Not all the nine guidelines to positioning attributions have been used because not all attributions have been used in the news story. But the attribution that has been used has met the expected requirements.
In this article there is no clear diversity of voices only or the quoting of both President Obama and his wife. The primary sources that have been quoted in this article are mainly authoritative and credible. The three attributions are from the President and the First Lady. There are no “hard words” used in the article. Fog Index: 12.50 words per sentence (avg), 57.50 letters per sentence and 1.57 syllables per word e.t.c
Interestingly, the article has been constructed on active words and has no notable redundancy. There are no jargons, clichés and many other problems. The story is fair and has been constructed on the inverted pyramid format. There are no notable transitional statement and the ending is well time too because the last bit is a quote. The article has adopted the APA format and that is found in attribution. The content is good for students in AUK and Kuwait and it is of interest to US and the world. There are no further concepts and there is no article prohibited in my textbook. Also, no new concepts need to be explained except for the writing formats. This story can only be reported when the projects begin during President Obama’s retirement. The next story may cover the post 100 days of President Obama’s retirement. Such coverage will ensure that the progression to building the library is covered, as well as the book writing.
