I. INTRODUCTION
Choosing a University can be a daunting task. For me, it was all the more difficult, because of my commitment to active duty in the Army. After perusing the programs at several different institutions, I happened to come across Excelsior – quite by chance. Of course, the term struck a chord right away. I knew that the word itself meant “excellence”, and Excelsior College has already lived up to its namesake. To begin with, I needed a college that was flexible, and one that was strictly online. Ironically, I learned about Excelsior via word-of-mouth, and did not search for its website until I received a glowing recommendation from my friend. Arranging a face-to-face meeting with a guidance counselor at a convenient time in my schedule was a breath of fresh air. Flexibility and an extensive online curriculum are what made Excelsior the right choice for me.
II. BODY
Being able to work a course schedule into occupational obligations, I think, is the biggest challenge most students will face because there are only 24 hours in a day. Unfortunately, about one-third of those hours are needed to recharge our batteries. Just as my Army commitment made traditional colleges and universities inaccessible, other students quickly find themselves in the same boat, trying to go to school full-time and work – just to pay their expenses. Excelsior had no problem accommodating my commitment to serving my country. Their unique take on educational purpose is reflected in their flexibility. After all, flexibility is a part of the bigger picture of work and school balance. If one aspect is out of focus, the entire picture is askew. However, when a respected college, such as Excelsior, honors a student’s need for flexibility, it shows that the school has integrity. After all, is integrity not an important part of character development, at any level of education? Excelsior understands the concept, and worked right away to help me build a schedule around my active duty commitments, instead of me accommodating them. Excelsior has always made me feel that I am in the driver’s seat, and that I have a great deal of autonomy in choosing not just my courses, but their scheduled times as well.
An important part of flexibility is the strictly online format of Excelsior’s curriculum. I was not familiar with online education per se, but its user-friendly format, and its 24/7 accessibility dovetailed neatly with Excelsior’s emphasis on flexibility – its mission to provide working students with access to quality education. With just an internet connection, and a laptop computer, I was well on my way toward earning an undergraduate degree at Excelsior. No working student who needs a curriculum with flexibility should overlook an online education. Surprisingly, the online education at Excelsior is extremely personalized, and I have one-on-one communication with all of my instructors. Not many prestigious colleges or universities can boast such personalized instructions. In fact, many institutions of higher learning are only capable of boasting about large, cramped lecture halls with uncomfortable seating. Again, the myth that a college education must be physically uncomfortable does not apply at Excelsior. My desk chair at home is probably much more comfortable than any lecture hall seating, and I receive personalized instruction. It really has been a win-win scenario for both myself and Excelsior. They attract students who value an education, and students, in turn, receive a valuable degree.
III. CONCLUSION
Indeed, flexibility is the watchword of the 21st century, and if a college cannot deliver flexibility, it is time to move on. Excelsior not only delivers, but its very name means it is a cut above the rest, an institution committed to excellence. Its online curriculum accommodates the real life obligations of students who need flexibility, and are responsible enough to apply themselves to remote learning. Frankly, I came across Excelsior through a stroke of luck, and I have not since looked back. Online schooling may be the trend, but Excelsior is a pioneer. Fortunately, I can still fulfill my commitment to my country, and Excelsior has gone out of their way to show they respect that commitment. Flexibility and an online education have been the winning combination for me in working towards a degree that will help further my career objectives. Hopefully, your college search will not be as time-consuming, and my words of advice are to go with a choice that emphasizes excellence -- a choice that emphasizes you.
