Many people say that if a movie does not contain something more than just a plot, it is not worth your attention. To my mind, it depends on what the viewer wants and what the audience is.
It is obvious that if a big company gathers together to watch some film and relax, they will not pay enough attention to some serious movie and will be easily distracted by something else. However, a film with a lot of action and comedy will definitely be suitable for such event. When a person just needs to relax and get away from daily grind, it is highly unlikely that this person wants to get into some deep thoughts about some serious topic. A good comedy or action help unwind and not think about your own problems. Sometimes we need just to immerge into the plot and absorb in the imaginary situation. Moreover, comedy movies are always uplifting and immediately improve your mood. It is proven that happy thoughts and emotions are contagious, and it is hard to resist the desire to smile or laugh on jokes or funny situations in the movie. That is why comedies are so popular within people of all ages and movie preferences. They are the best choice for watching with your friends or family as this genre is quite various.
In addition, there are many cases when movies drastically changed somebody’s life. For example, after watching movies about subcultures or rock bands from the 1970s, youth can start to imitate them and involve into drugs or alcohol, as teenagers are especially affected by movies. Everything that happens in films has a great influence on our thoughts and actions. Viewers often become jealous of movie character’s lives. Children dream about magic powers, teens want to have a lot of friends, adults seek for love and their dream partner, and old people look for some drama and action, which they miss so much in their lives. Therefore, it is not a surprise that they let movies capture their attention and drag them into the imaginary perfect world. There are even examples of adults, who are so obsessed with some fiction movies like “Star Wars”, that they spend all their money on DVDs with extended versions of the movie, collection statues of main characters and many others traps for fans, which bring a lot of money to the creators of the movie. Some films should be only of entertaining purpose for people who just want to relax instead of be involved into some deep thoughts.
However, we must admit that movies with entertaining purpose only are usually very stupid. They often speculate on sex and some pointless jokes, which make no sense and sometimes even become racist. Children who watch such movies will not learn anything useful and develop a sound sense of humor. Movies about love and friendship will teach teens about relationships between people and help them understand their personality better. Films about people who never give up, achieve their goals and become a success will be very inspirational not only for adolescence, but also for adults. We tend to compare our lives to movie characters’ lives, which often gives us hope or even a desire to change something in our everyday life. Some people take their musical instruments or brushes, which were lying for many years in some closet, and try to refresh their skills after watching a movie about a successful painter or musician. Those who think that their life is boring find some hobbies or activities, or learn not to refuse to get the possibilities life gives to them.
There can also be other examples of positive influence of movies on some serious topics. Sometimes people completely revalue their lives after watching a movie about wars, disasters or other tragedies. They start to appreciate what they are given it their lives, for instance, the possibility to hug their loved ones, knowing that they have a place to go. Furthermore, there is a huge variety of educational movies, which tell us stories of life of famous scientists, historical figures, politicians and other people, who brought changes to science, culture or public life. Viewers often cannot even imagine that the story of another person can touch their heart so much. Movies, which are based on real stories, give us an opportunity to learn more about some historical events and imagine ourselves in such situation. In addition, such movies help us discover unknown stories about people, who made serious inventions, performed some deeds or travelled to distant places. This really broadens our minds and lets us start an interesting conversation or share some facts with our friends.
Still, there are movies, which both entertain us and make us think about some serious issues. In the beginning, we can think that we are watching a relaxing comedy or some action film, but it brings a question of love, friendship or tolerance, which combine in a sophisticated way and define a genuinely good movie. It changes our attitude to some things, but does not bring some drastic changes, which often is a perfect combination. Such strategy is also used while creating cartoons, as they must be not only entertaining, but also teach kids how to be kind, friendly and supportive. Sometimes cartoons can be educational even for adults, who can distract from serious problems and let their inner kid out.
In conclusion, it is hard to decide, which sort of movies is the best one, as entertaining is not always enough. Sometimes we need to get away from our problems with a movie that does not question some serious problems up. Nevertheless, it is often boring to watch a film that has no point apart from making you laugh at characters and situations in their lives. It all depends on person’s mood and preferences. If somebody is satisfied with no deep meaning in the movie, this person can enjoy a wide choice of such movies. As for me, I appreciate movies that make me think and do some research on various topics. Therefore, it is up to us to decide, whether we want a movie with an educational or entertaining purpose. We just have to remember that our choice often defines our interests and intelligence and make sure that the movies we choose do not influence us badly.
