This RSA video depicts speech of Sir Ken Robinson who shares his ideas and observations about modern system of education. Also, he discusses true purpose of it as well as illuminates its weak points by investigating its main goals and priorities which are: preparing ‘bricks’ that will perfectly well fit into the wall called society. Moreover, Sir Robinson compares process of educating to line factories which are alike divided into rooms, bell signals for breaks and shift/lesson start or end and children are separated accordingly. With this in mind one may see that education is a great tool of industrialism that is aimed at manufacturing copies of copies aimed at performing well in particular domains. Moreover, there is a little room for creativity and cultural development. Taking this into consideration one may see not only devastating aspect of education but also how it damaged indigenous identity and culture.
Significantly is that Colonists` attempt to make savages ‘normal’ and ‘educated’ has destroyed their unique way of thinking and as a result way of passing knowledge and world perception. Moreover, as can be seen from Sir Robinson`s talk the Western educational patterns and course promote materialistic values while indigenous teachings are focused at spiritual development and understanding inner and outer worlds. With this in mind Native Americans were implementing correct course of educating their youth which was misunderstood by colonists as a ‘primitive’. Moreover, forced westernization not only distorted lives, culture and identity of Native Americans but also took them far behind in their spiritual development. It should be mentioned that violent treatment of indigenous children at schools for using their language or demonstrating connection to their culture implemented huge sense of shame for who they are. Significantly that this pattern of shaming comes from educational concept which promotes – if one does not do well at school or college it means that one is a total failure. As can be seen unwillingness to share knowledge, cooperate, understand and fierce replacement of indigenous values with the Western ones led to spread of false and alien educational concepts which do more harm than good.
