Unfortunately, situations like this are not rare in the modern world. I mean both the overuse of internet and phone calls at a workplace and the unfair judgment and firing of the employees. However, although the situations are numerous, there are people like Lynn who stand up for their colleagues and who try to solve the problem at the lowest cost, that is, without having to make somebody lose their job.
What concerns Lynn's management skills, I believe she is a rather good manager. First of all, she knows her employees very well. She emphasizes it several times in her dialogue with Janet that William is a brilliant and responsible worker. She also repeatedly mentions that in spite of his phone and internet overuse he has never failed in producing the best performance. Secondly, I consider Lynn to be a great manager because of her trying to defend William by all possible means. It is clear that she cares not only for herself in the organization, but for each and every member of her team, and, in general, for the welfare of the whole company.
As for Lynn's overall performance, I guess she could do better. For instance, she should be aware of the company's policies so that situations like this would never happen. If Lynn had been aware of all of the policies, she would have been able to let her employees know that their phone calls and internet use are being monitored and the data gathered can be used against them. However, it is not only Lynn who is to blame. If I were the HR department manager, I would have used some notification system. That way, the employees who are in danger of being fired would think thoroughly about their overuse of phone calls and internet, and they would have a possibility to change their behavior.
