It was not easy letting go of something that we really love and something that has been part of our system for so long. I know this, but I also know that I can only clearly understand the hardships behind it through experience. When I realized that I had to conduct an abstinence report for my substance abuse class, I felt worried at first. However, I realized that as a counselor, it is a good idea to also experience abstinence and the withdrawal symptoms associated with it so that I would understand what my clients are going through.
If there is something that I would not want to quit taking, that would be coffee. I love coffee, and my day was not complete without it. I was a heavy coffee drinker, and I used to take many cups of it throughout the day. However, I was not really proud of it. I used to take coffee to keep me awake and to give me extra energy when I needed it, but it did not really take away the fatigue. Instead, I knew that I was only filling myself up with loads of calories and sugar. Worse, the more I became dependent on coffee as an energy booster, the more I found myself eating too many snacks and drinking less water.
Initially, the idea of not drinking coffee was stressful enough. Despite this, I was convinced that it was the right thing to do not just for my body but also for my own growth in the field of counselling. Before I started my abstinence journey, I prayed and asked the Lord to help me so that I could be strong enough to do it.
The actual journey was far more stressful than I ever imagined. On the first day, I was very moody. I also had a headache that will not go away no matter what I did. Despite the struggles of dealing with headaches for the next eight days, I decided to continue with the journey of fasting from coffee. One of the hardest parts is getting up in the mornings with the smell of coffee in the kitchen. I even remember asking my husband not to make coffee until I was finished with my abstinence report. However, I soon realized that it was not practical and that I am being selfish. For other people who are also abstaining from any substance, they face temptations in their life, too. Therefore, it is important to be strong enough to deal with moments like this, which is what I did. Every time I smell coffee in the morning, I just try my best to ignore it and think about the reason why I am abstaining from coffee in the first place. The second week of my abstinence journey was a bit better. I was able to move forward much easier without the anxiety of not having coffee. The headaches were also gone. At the same time, I felt more energized because my cravings for sugary snacks were diminished. I also used the opportunity to drink more water instead of getting a cup of coffee.
Overall, the activity served me a good lesson because I realized that I was addicted to coffee, something that I didn’t pay much attention before. Although it is not as harmful as the other addicting substances, any form of addiction is still not good. It is important for us to have self-control and to always take things in moderation. Even if I can still drink coffee anytime, I must do it in moderation and not to the extent that I will be addicted to it again. Being able to abstain from coffee for fours week gave me an enormous sense of euphoria. I consider it as a one of a kind experience which cultivated my respect for substance abusers who seek assistance to quit drugs, especially those who quit cold turkey.
