The process of writing an essay requires the analysis and assessment of some specific rhetoric factors and situations and this leads to the development of the structure and content of the essays. During my semester in the 188 class, I have done two interpretive essays (‘Tohe’ and ‘Behar’ essays) which were based on the social issues and involved the entire rhetorical composition based on the learning acquired for writing such essays in the class. This essay aims at reflecting the involved writing situations, processes, motif , and social factors behind the development of these two essays and how I used my learning from the class in writing them.
In terms of the underlying rhetorical situations behind both the essays, there was an evaluation of the purpose, target audience, predefined stance, genre, and medium classification for each of the essays. In terms of discovery, the Tohe essay idea came to me as a striking medium for targeting the male dominated and gender-biased societies to have a unique motif of learning something from a society that has stringent gender equality for women via the Dine culture. Similarly, the Behar essay was discovered as an ideal medium for explaining the plight of those immigrants who face identity crisis and the essay targeted addressing the society in favour of those people who are discriminated due to their hazy cultural backgrounds.
There were multiple reconsiderations regarding ascertaining my stance on each of the two topics and in classifying the genre of interpreting them because both of them focussed on the prominent social issues. So, I reconsidered over my chosen stance in favour of adopting and propagating feminism in the modern society via the Tohe essay and for negating the cultural and religious segregation experienced by the immigrant Jews in the American society. The development of both essays was relatively easier once the discovery and reconsideration of the chosen topics and undertaken stance for targeted audience were ascertained. Since, both the essays are interpretive in nature, deciphering the intended message by the two authors and presenting them in a coherent way to support their stance led to the development of both of them.
The composition and design features for both of the essays were easily affirmed by deploying the collaborative and social nature of the writing methodology. Assimilating the core idea proposed in the Tohe essay enabled a descriptive and supportive stance on the explained practices of women equality and the consequent absence of feminism. Similarly, understanding and explaining the social aspect of cultural differences for a Jewish family by gathering the actual implications of the topic made it easy for the development of the Behar’s essay.
In terms of ethical and moral considerations, both of my chosen interpretive essay topics are deliberately channeled on addressing the socio-ethical aspects for two prime issues. The Tohe essay uses the Dine culture to propagate the idea of a gender balanced society where women can be given an equal opportunity as that of men and provides an ethical and moral framework for practicing this in other cultures of the World. Similarly, the Behar’s essay puts a reinforced stance over the identity crisis issues and ways to overcome the difficulties and obstacles by establishing on one’s actual religious and cultural values.
This reflective essay has used the earlier done interpretive essays in order to assess the various rhetorical aspects of writing that led to the development of these essays and this essay is developed by analyzing the various facets of writing methodology focused on creating them. Thus, it can be concluded that the class 118 learning has given specific insight on carefully choosing the rhetorical situations and collaborative approach of writing for developing effective interpretive essays.
