Applying to college has to be one of the most common activities that high school students think about, prepare for, and actually take part in. I once hear my high school college counselor say that every year, over 700.000 high school students submit over three million college applications. Although I have no evidence to support those numbers, my own experience and observations in high school suggest that it is probably true. During my last year, if a conversation with classmates, teachers or parents did not begin or end with the topic of college, it would be mentioned somewhere in the middle.
Accordingly, the day that I started my application to the University of Southern Alabama was not much different than other days; or so I thought at that time. The reality was, however, that the instant I began filling out the application, would turn out to be one of the most significant moments of my life.
I would soon learn that filling in the application is really the easiest part of the process. What was hard was reviewing and analyzing my life in an effort to determine which parts best describe me and would persuade the admissions committee that I was qualified and worthy of being accepted as a student. While this process might me easy for some it was quite hard for me. The more I looked at my life the more nervous I became that I did not have the qualifaications to be admitted.
That was just one of the difficulties that filling in the university application not only made me remember but also made me think and fear that, although I confronted the challenges before me and worked hard to do well in school and on the IELTS exam; it would still not be enough. Moreover, filling in the application made me nervous that despite my efforts, the results would nevertheless be that the admissions committee would reject my application.
The apprehension stayed with me after I submitted the application, during the entire waiting period. It only dissipated the day that I learned of my acceptance into the University of Southern Alabama. The day was truly significant. It was then that I realized the oy of knowing that I would be going to the university of my choice and in understanding how much I’ve learned about myself through the process of applying.
