When I was thinking about the possible places to realize my potential and continue education, I was more than pleased to discover the peculiarities of the honors program at the University of Delaware. It fascinated me that there was a perfect place for me to develop my multiple interests and apply my knowledge and experience. I understood that it was exactly the right place for me to realize my goals in life and get real enjoyment from this process. Below I will explain why this particular feature is so important for me and how I can contribute into the university’s vibrant life in my turn.
I have been involved in many different activities since the beginning of middle school. In that period of my life I felt more independent as to the choice of groups and organizations I was able to participate in. So, I decided to join Math Counts, basketball club, chess club, yearbook club, orchestra, and the pit in the school play. Although some people considered that it was too much and I had to choose something narrower in scope, I decided that I had to try it before rejecting. This was one of the best decisions that I have ever made. I was very proud that apart from active participation in all these clubs, I managed to get good grades and be a member of Boy Scouts, intramural basketball and intramural baseball outside of school. Thus, middle school provided me with a foundation of my interests for high school and my whole future. Managing all of these clubs and keeping up the good grades was a challenge, which got even harder to handle in high school.
In high school I met new friends and continued attending to my interests that I started in the middle school. Moreover, I succeeded to satisfy and develop new interests that were arising in the course of time. I enjoyed the opportunity to become a part of the German club, where I participated in the local Oktoberfest and learned about the German culture. I also joined science league, where I took tests in various scientific fields and built a trebuchet for a pumpkin chunkin’ competition. High school provided me with a great amount of new knowledge, owing to which I was able to develop my enthusiasm towards science and math. The latter has always been my niche. No matter what type of math, Algebra II, Geometry, or Calculus, everything seemed to click in my head and I was always able to understand even the hardest rules and principles in one day. I love math and I want to pursue major in this field when I go to college.
I learned the virtues of community service through my experience in scouting. It also showed me how to live my life along the moral principles. Boy Scouts provided me with knowledge that no other organization could ever bring and I will never forget it, always being grateful to them. I matured through Boy Scouts, where I learned the significance of community service and the benefits from giving back to the community. I became a dedicated Eagle Scout who underscored the importance of helping other people. I was driven by understanding that if a person succeeds to combine the passion for science and math with the passion for helping the community, the perfect job for such a person is to become a medical doctor. I took it upon myself to start volunteering at hospitals so as not only to gain insight into the medical field, but also to give back to the community.
Apart from my participation in community services and numerous interests, I also enjoy playing violin and viola. I had the honor to play in the Carnegie Hall with my high school orchestra at a music festival. Playing both these instruments requires a great deal of dedication, hard work, and practice. But at the same time this activity is soothing and relaxing for me, which is why it is always something that I look forward to every day. I have learned from my experience in playing these two instruments that nothing can be done well without dedication and hard work. I hope to continue doing it while studying at college and I consider a variant of pursuing a minor in this sphere.
While studying at the University of Delaware I hope to double major in mathematics and biochemistry. I believe that my unique background of various interests can contribute to the vibrant community of the institution. I am not involved in one particular club or organization and neither do I have passion for one field or area. I have a wide variety of interests in sports, community service, and, most importantly, an interest in studying. I want to learn and understand the world that I live in and I believe that the honors education at the University of Delaware is the best chance for me to achieve this goal.
