Some people do not see why people engage in contact sports such as Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). For some, it is just an outlet to unleash the inner aggression people are feeling. However, for me, MMA is not only my passion, but my way of discovering aspects of my life that I never knew existed. You see, I was uneasy about myself before. I would often label myself as ordinary or typical. I felt that there was nothing special about me. I was a guy who lived in Atlanta for seventeen years then had to move again to Washington. There were times that I would ask myself what I wanted to do with my life, and it would often take me hours just to come up with an initial idea.
During my high school days, I decided to engage myself in boxing. I liked the sport not because I was hurting others, but it gave me the feeling that I can be someone. That moment marked the start of my passion for contact sports. After boxing, I quickly tried to familiarize myself with other contact sports, and now I am a mixed martial artist. Difficult would have to be an understatement to define what I went through to get to where I am right now. I had to endure hard training. The training was more mental than physical because I had to push myself to keep going despite where my body almost gave up due to the painstaking drills. I remember my first training session; my body was being covered with blisters that I could not move properly for several days. However, as time progressed, I got used to the physical demands of the sport.
I remembered my first fight in a cage. I had butterflies in my stomach (no, a zoo, to be exact). Backstage I could not keep calm because it was my debut and I do not even know what it is like out there. When I first entered the arena, I was literally blinded by the lights and overwhelmed by the crowd. It was noisy to the point that it was almost suffocating. I knew that if I was to win the fight, I needed to compose myself. When I was sitting in my corner, I was fidgeting because flashbacks of my hard training kept on surfacing. I knew that this moment was my gauge to find out if every hour I spent working hard was worth it. When the first bell rang, adrenalin quickly took over my system. I know that my opponent was not a pushover, so I had to be careful about my movements. We were both measuring each other during the initial minutes, but eventually got into the action. My first punch was jittery because I hit nothing but air, but when I got into my groove, I was able to land some punches and attacks to my opponent. My opponent was quick and strong, and he managed to land several blows, but I was fortunate to have found an opening in his defence. I mustered up all my strength and punched him in the jaw and he fell down. I won via knockout.
When I saw my opponent fall to the ground, I felt the place silenced and then immediately blow up due to the roar of the crowd. When they raise my hand, I did not know what was happening, but when my corner came to ring and congratulated me, it all sunk down to me that I had just won my first fight. I could not contain my happiness. I looked across the sea of people and I told myself that this was something I want to do. I finally found my passion.
Now I am twenty-three years old and continuously training. I discovered that MMA was not only a sport of interest but my way of life. I found confidence in the sport. It taught me life lessons such as getting back up despite falls. I am now more confident because I know I have accomplished something with my life. When I train, I now that I am adding to my skills that is why despite the fatigue, I do not complain. I am into MMA not because it is violent, but it instilled within me life values such as discipline and self-worth. If people would ask me what is the greatest lesson, I could take away from the sport? I would say trust. You need to trust yourself that you can do it. Trust yourself that you remain disciplined enough to show up for practice despite being covered with bruises because you now slacking is not an option. I also trusted my coach and the people around me that despite my weaknesses or shortcomings they will stay by my side and egg me on. I know that I still have a long way to go and that I have yet to reach my full potential as a fighter. However, I am more than willing to push myself even further because of the sense of fulfilment that sport is giving me. I also learned that it was not always about winning, but the pieces of learning you get from each fight. It is true that what does not kill you make you stronger, because those instances make you see the things you need to improve within yourself.
