Human arrogance towards sustainability of the planet can be traced many centuries in history. It is obvious that the earth was once a sustainable place where all the components of the environment found a common balance for survival. However, human negligence slowly stripped away the ability of the earth to sustain its components unnoticed until the 1970s’. It is absolutely true that the current world population is gradually exceeding the earth’s carrying capacity. There are many occurrences currently that prove the fact that the human population is quickly outstripping the earth resources.
Global warming is one of the most contemporary issues being addressed globally. It is clear that some of the most popular causes of global warming such as deforestation are a result of man’s excessive utilization of natural vegetation. This clearly indicates that human beings have grown in numbers to a point where they utilize earth resources faster than they can be restored.
The overall gradual drop in the global economy also implies that the available resources are becoming insufficient to satisfy human needs. The quick replenishing of essential resources that are used as raw materials in industries is one of the reasons why most products are hiking in prices. Alternatively, it also implies that the earth has reached, or is almost reaching its growth limit.
According to Figure A, it is clear that sustainability is essential for the planet, the economy and the people. However, the aggressive push of people to sustain their increasing needs outweighs environmental growth and sustainability efforts. The sustainability of the economy on the other hand depends on the effort of the people and the ability of the earth resources to sustain their demands.
