Findings: What Conclusions Were Drawn From The Work? What Did They Learn/Discover?
The most crucial discovery was that reporters from bit newspapers were most likely to use descriptors on physical appearance, attire, personal relationships and family when describing men’s basketball. The findings were in contrast to previous studies that indicated that descriptors in physical appearances or personal lives were more common in media commentaries on women in sports. Coding results for gender-based descriptors showed a decline in conventional gender stereotypes in newspaper articles on March Madness. This trend, currently attributed to pacesetters such as The New York Times and USA Today will serve as the foundation for an emerging era of media coverage on trends in women sports.
Value To Me As A Communication Scholar: As A Scholar, Did You Find The Article Valuable? Was It Easy To Understand? Did You Like It?
The article was relevant because it shows the changing norms in gender balance in society and the abolition of stereotypes to give room for a new crop of modern gender embraces that are seen in sports and other activities. As a communication scholar, the article was easy to understand, and I liked it very much because it gives the needed approaches in embracing modern trends in covering issues of gender in society. As the author puts it, the coverage of women’s basketball has come a long way and is still evolving. It is upon us as communication scholars to continue propelling this modernity forward and encouraging the abolition of gender stereotypes by covering these issues in a most gender balanced and sensitive way such that the strengths of women in sports are also represented. Doing that will also discourage prejudice and discrimination of women and support their equal rights and roles in society.
