INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE
LITERATURE REVIEW;
Human resource as a course teaches students skills which can be used in organization of businesses, hiring of employees or personnel and also offer trainings to individuals. HR students are taught on topics that cover on managerial principles, sexual harassments, how to motivate employees, issuing of bonuses, retirement process, budgeting among others.
Through the internship some of the experiences included attending interviews. Lesson derived from this was how to act professionally when it comes to hiring. Other topics covered in the course work include ethical consideration. WP as a company abides in this as they incorporate the labor laws in their dealing with employees. Not only do they abide with the law but the cultural practices of the Saudi Arabians are incorporated in the company.
Compensations and remuneration of employees is very crucial when it comes to the employer. If the system is efficient it will help keep the employees. Benefits are also included in the employment contracts. As HR personnel it is prudent to know to know how to budget as this will save on company’s resources and at the same time keep your employees motivated.
During the internship period most of these aspects were observed and sometimes involved directly. Though the period was short to cover everything comprehensively, a lot was covered with the exception of how to handle workplace conflicts.
TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE GAINED DURING THE INTERNSHIP
Activities undertaken during the internship period:
How to use Microsoft excel – the software was used in arranging and helped in comparing between the multiple lists and the he employees database which has more than 4000 employees.
How to operate different printers which were used to print Identity Cards for new employees.
Gained a better understanding of the rules in the ministry of labor and how companies are supposed to integrate them in their companies.
Learnt what GOSI is and its application in a company such as Worley Parson. How to make payment for GOSI. Added skills included how to make or renew Iqma for the employees.
Time management skills. Time management is really a key skill that needs to be mastered for effective operation of activities within an organization.
Personal managements skills make one a more effective and productive employee. This combined with the ability to plan and manage multiple assignments and task, learning how to set priorities and adapting to changes easily, be agile. These skills will set you apart in terms of your performance in an organization.
Human resource course is very wide and a lot is learnt during the lectures. However not all skills will be applied when it comes to an internship but it makes you a better prepared candidate. Some of the skills learnt at PMU that were used during the internship included;
Team work-WP is a strong believer in team work and highly advocates it to their employees. Team work helps different departments achieve their goals and meet the objectives of the company.
Need for employees to be proactive in their different tasks. This aids in avoiding mistakes that can easily be prevented.
The relationship between employees and their bosses should be a bottom to up one. In this the managers are able to listen to their employees and understand their positions. WP applies this mode of leadership.
The dos and don’ts of conducting interviews which were learnt by attending interview sessions in the company.
Computer/technical literacy is very key and it comes in handy in ones work station. During the internship this skills were used and other new skills were learned throughout the period.
Challenges faced during the internship period include:
Lack of proficiency in Microsoft excel operation was a hindrance at the very begging. To overcome this challenge, internet was used as a tool where one can learn through tutorials and they help you master the art.
Mastering the details; WP is very goal oriented and their service should be offered with the outmost perfection. This loads a lot of pressure on someone if you are not used or keen to details or used to work under pressure. This was overcome by liaising with other employees and learning by observing other employees.
Communication. Mode of delivery of information is key as it helps foster relationships within an organization and creates a friendlier environment to work.
EVALUATION OF THE INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE
This evaluation is based on the previous section. The pertinent issue that comes out very clearly is the idea of corporate culture. In my own assessment, internship at Worley Parson goes beyond focusing on skill training. There are additional including interpersonal relations and communication skills. This is a strong point that interns need to learn.
Finally, my assessment seem to point to the fact that trainers need to show how theory is related to the particular skill they are inculcating into someone during internship period. This boost the academic legacy and even strengthen the link that exist between academia and professionalism which certainly a good idea for posterity.
SWOT ANALYSIS
As observed during the period of the internship, it was easy to analyze the performance of the company based on its strengths; this included the relationship between the employers and managers. In that they interact freely and another strength is the work values adopted by the company, presence of a code of conduct for the company which will keepeveryone in check. Strength is their management of their employees. Weaknesses; disconnecting communication between the interns and the supervisor occurred, very little assistance was accorded to the interns. Opportunities; their employee relationship needs to be improved, and Threat; due to a cross-cultural background communication may become a threat to many employees due to the language barrier.
CONCLUSION
Having observed the dedication, resources, opportunities and challenges at Worley Parson during my internship period, I can logically arrive at one single conclusion that this is a great place to be for someone who is keen about building professional excellence in science, business and information technology. The skills gained during my internship period are not comparable with theory work that one can spend years studying. Being proficient in HR requires just more academics.
Despite the weaknesses that are actually unavoidable in any practical field, it is important for one to remember that the success of an organization does not depend on one single person but a team. Teamwork is crucial for the overall success of an organization. This success can be measured in terms of how the company promotes its employees in terms of building stronger and wider professional network for them.
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATION
The opportunity was a great learning experience. The exposure one gets from WP Company is great. The opportunity helped highlight on the strengths and weakness that contribute on to be as good human resource person. Learning is a two way traffic where the interns help the company identify areas that they’ve slacked in and also interns contribute to the goals and objectives of the company. One area that was identified is the intern-supervisor relation that the company needs to improve on.
The main purpose of this report was to present my internship experience in a holistic manner. In so doing, I monitored and analyzed everything as accurately as I could for the period I was at Worley Parson. As evident above, this report has captured; organizational marketing strategy, competitive strategy, my internship experience together with the accompanying evaluation of the same and finally analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWORT Analysis) and came up with the following recommendations;
Worley Parson should consider offering in service training for its employees in order to improve their skills and make the more efficient and productive.
The organization needs to design a new communication channel that is easy, efficient, and transparent and without any chances of victimizing those who freely give their opinions and suggestions.
The senior management at Worley Parson should develop mechanism to recognize merit. Employees and interns who depict exceptional skills and dedication to their work need to be recognized in one way or the other by the management.
There is need to allow employees at Worley Parson to be independent thinkers so that to encourage creativity and innovation at work place.
There should be a clear cut code of ethics in the organization. This will help the institution to incorporate liberty in non-essential things and give zero tolerance to essential things.
