Managers who do not work in their native country should be particularly aware of the cultural limitations of a particular leadership style. Studies show huge differences between leadership styles within different countries. This gives food for the research, especially important in today's world of multinational corporations. Europeans generally are more influenced by traditions, and they are more susceptible to the autocratic leadership rather than, for example, Americans. On the other hand, despite the fact that the Japanese culture appreciates tradition and loyalty, the Japanese widely and effectively use workers' participation in decision-making.
The manager who wants to work as efficiently as possible, to get everything he can from his subordinates, cannot afford to use only one style of leadership throughout his career. The manager would rather learn how to use all possible styles, types and methods of influence. It is the most appropriate way of leadership for the situation. If you once ask somebody to name the "best" style of leadership, it would be the "adaptive" one or "focused on reality." In addition, new decision rules are now developing and they can serve as guidelines on how and when to change leadership styles. If we analyze the relevant literature, we can understand what is considered an "effective" leadership style. Therefore, effective leaders are those who can behave in different ways - depending on the requirements of reality.
Leadership, as well as management, is to some extent an art. Perhaps, this is the reason why researchers failed to develop and justify any theory. In some situations, managers can achieve an efficiency of its work, structuring the tasks, planning and organizing them and separating the roles, showing concern and giving support. In other situations, the manager can count more on his influence, but allowing employees to participate in decision-making. Subsequently, the same leaders recognize the need to change the management style.
