Introduction
Educator’s Impulse for Teaching this Level
Why Are You Interested in Teaching This Particular Grade and this Age Level
I am teaching history in high school and this gives me the opportunity to impart knowledge about different historical events to students who, in just a few years, will play their distinctive role in the society as adults. I am interested to help the students become more aware of themselves, and the society as well. Moreover, it helps that the students are already in an age when they start to be curious about the environmental, political and economic settings. As a teacher, it is invigorating to see these young people take their gradual steps towards their development.
Educator’s Philosophy of Teaching
What is Your Philosophy of Teaching and Learning Regarding Your School Aged Students?
I believed that teaching should be student centered, and I based my philosophy on the idea that the focus of the classroom activity should be more on the leaners. By allowing the students to actively participate in the different activities, the teacher is encouraging them to develop their critical, social and problem solving skills. In addition to that, it is my goal to make them freely think about the topics and critically related them to the current times. I give them time to do group activities to encourage camaraderie among the students, as well as time to do a certain activity alone to let them develop their independence. While I always plan my work ahead, I recognize that I also have to be flexible when teaching because there is almost always a need to make adjustments for improved instruction.
Educator’s Teaching Strategies
Could You Please, Encrich My Educational Outcome by Sharing Three of Your Strategies That Make Learning Accessible and Meaningful for Students of Diverse Backgrounds?
Classroom teaching involved the interaction with students coming from different backgrounds. In order to make the learning experience more meaningful for the students, first, one must embrace the fact that cultural diversity is a a reality in the classroom and this should be communicated to the whole class early on. Second, as a teacher, one must endeavor to develop a full understanding of the student’s background to avoid unnecessary confusion in the future. This is also a means to convey a welcoming and caring attitude towards the students. Third, I always make it a point to be culturally responsive, by allowing the student to share their own culture in the classroom.
How Do You Best Serve Student’s Families?
One expects to have students that come from different cultural and family background. As teachers, we are entrusted with the education and learning of the students. However, teachers should also endeavor to communicate with the families in order to better understand how best to serve them. The importance of communication with the parents cannot be set aside, because as parents, they must also have an understanding of the school curriculum and the learning objectives that are supposed to be attained by the end of the term. Moreover, parents play an important role in the education of their children, and encouraging them to track the progress of their child will result in better learning outcome.
What is Your Advice for me as a Perspective Teacher?
For prospective teachers, my advice is for you to keep learning about the most effective principles in teaching. The time is evolving, and as a teacher for several years, I realize that there is no one way to define the best method in teaching. I think this is for the individual teacher to learn, because teaching principles are sometimes dependent on an individual. Nevertheless, I vouch that every teacher should continuously improve themselves by furthering their education, even after graduating from the basic education course.
