The first difference which may be noticed is the size. The journalistic profile about a professional poker player Jared Hubbard is bigger than the profile about a ballerina Chelsea Rittenhouse. As a result of its bigger size, the first profile includes more details and represents a better image of the professional poker player’s life. In the poker player’s profile, there are different points of views, so that the reader can find out about negative reaction and consequences which may face an average professional player. Moreover, the profile of the poker player includes more people’s opinion about Jared and his job. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s profile has got only one quotation which proves her words but doesn’t show the other opinion or position on her profession.
Honestly speaking, I like the journalistic profile about the professional poker player more than the profile about the ballerina. The reason is that the first journalistic profile covers more detailed elements which describe his life from the different angles. It, also, demonstrates problems and contradictions connected to this profession and his life in general. I, also, like that an author describes how his parents react on his profession and try to accept their son’s position. The other thing which I like in the profile is that the player points out that poker is not also just a game and the way he earns money, but also a hobby, passion and even the sense of his life. So bigger size and more details get the reader’s attention and provide the reader with the whole picture of his life.
There are visible differences between a traditional academic essay and a journalistic profile. First, the essay shows the ideas or general opinion on the issue, meanwhile the journalistic profile is nothing more a complex interview which describes someone’s experiences during their lives. Second, the profile includes eye-catching elements so that the reader gets the text and feels the same emotions which have the interviewee. Third, the profile includes extra-linguistic features so that the author tries to describe the surroundings and emotions which occur during the interview. Fourth, the journalistic profile is much easier to read since it covers more interesting and eye-catching stories. Fifth, there are more quotations in the journalistic profile than in the essays since the author tries to convince the reader that all the words are from the interviewee.
