Evolutionary theories have been deep rooted in the field of Biology. Much of modern day Biology is what it is due to the knowledge and application of evolutionary theories. Study of evolutionary theories have made it possible for many areas of Biology to advance including medicine. However, there are limitations to evolutionary theories. This, however, does not mean that the evolution itself can be renounced, as many non-biologist believe. This paper discusses the advantages and limitations of evolutionary theories rooted in Biology.
As for advantages of evolutionary theories for Biology as a field, there are many. Medicine is probably the most prominent example of advantages of evolutionary theory being beneficial to Biology. Studying evolution has improved the understanding of scientists about various disease causing microorganisms including viruses that cause flu. Study of evolution in viruses is possible due to their short life span, thus helping us understand how flu viruses evolve so quickly, having different trait, so that we need new flu vaccines every few years to fight the evolving flu virus.
Talking about limitations of evolutionary theory, it will be fair to say that evolution can also create hindrance in scientific discovery. Sticking to evolutionary theories has slowed down the understanding of human body for scientists in the past. Evolutionary theory suggested that there are some vestigial organs in many organisms. Scientists considered appendix and tonsils to be vestigial organs and operations for their removal became common practice until the purpose of each organ was found. Thus, evolutionary theories do hinder the understanding of scientists about certain things which could be better understood if not for evolutionary theories.
