The impact of Affirmative Action on public- sector employment rate of African American in the State of California
My research topic will be ‘Comparing the periods 10 years before and 10 years after affirmative actions on the State of California on Higher education, Navy and California Labor and Workforce development Agency’.
Affirmatives actions led to changes in the State of California structure, this includes Higher Education, Navy and California Labor and Workforce development Agency as compared to the periods before the affirmative action, 1950s. In my research am going to show that these changes actually took place comparing the three industries before and after affirmative actions
Affirmative action’s also known as positive discriminations refer to policies that take major factors including religion, color, origin nationality or sex into consideration in areas of employment, business and education to benefit the group that is underrepresented. It was introduce in the United States of America to increase the number of African Americans in employment and also to reduce racial discriminations in the California. In 1967, the concept was also introduced on matters concerning (Gray, 2001).
In 1946, a federal court case was taken to court to challenge Racial Segregation in Orange County, California Schools. In its ruling, the court came to a conclusion that segregation of Mexicans and Mexican American students into separate schools for Mexicans was unconstitutional. This sparked various uproars concerning school segregations and racism in the country leading to various other court cases, appeals and later on resulting to the affirmative actions imposed by the president.
Affirmative actions were introduced to so as to enable the less presented members of the public to get representation in various fields such as education and employment. The African Americans in The State of California were majorly affected before the introduction of the affirmatives actions as they were not allowed to join white schools, denying them the chance to join good white jobs and even if by any chance they had meet the qualifications, employment in white collar jobs was not as easy(Gray, 2001). This led to increased unemployment among the African American resulting to major insecurities issues in the state. Those who were employed were mainly employed as manual laborers as those were the only jobs designed for the African Americans in California.
Affirmative Action is important as they led to the development of all communities and races as all were given equal opportunities in employment, education and other areas. As can be seen in the 1980s,Employment rates among the African Americans had increased as compared in the 1950s, this shows the extent to which affirmative actions have positively impacted on the economy of the state of California. Affirmative actions will also be considers in today’s world so as ensure that all races especially the African Americans benefit equally from employment opportunities as compared to other races.
Various literatures have been written by various writers concerning affirmative actions on the employment of African Americans. But most of them are focused on the impacts on the economy and how they have all occurred, with little focusing on the time before and the time after the period affirmative action took place. This gives my project originality as its though out and original just relying on works which relate to my work but not fully
Secondary data will be used for data collection, this will involve military employment data, school enrollment data in the state of California and employment data in the state as well. Quantitative and qualitative means of data methodology will be used to ensure effective and efficient summarization of data. This will result in the analysis of the various models more specifically resulting in accurate conclusions being reached at. Quantitative methodology will deal with data such the employment rates and GPA of the country changes due to affirmative action and qualitative will deal with the overall conclusion and analyzing of information as seen so as to come up with well understood and summarized information
