Transport and communication has advanced over the years both within and without the United States. Since May 1908, when the first passenger flew by plane on European air, and the launching of the 1905 Flyer 3 by the Wright brothers, air transport has undergone radical development and improvements over the years. By 1914, the technology that was used in the construction of airplanes, had witnessed numerous innovation. It was in 1914 that the flying boat was established at an airport manufacturing plant in St. Louis, Missouri. The development of airplane technology was instrumental to the growth of airmail services. The innovation in air transport allowed the transportation of mails across different regions both within the United States and also to other continents.
The growth of the air industry boosted both interstate and intercontinental commerce. Despite the thriving airmail services, scandals emerged about the execution and management of this government service. The economic effects emanating from the scandals of US airmail prompted President Franklin Roosevelt to transfer the management of the airmail services to the US army. The establishment of The Federal Aviation Act and the Civil Aeronautics Board enhanced the handling of air transport and air-related commerce through legislations by US Congress.
The involvement of the United States, in World War I, was instrumental in the continued growth of US manufacturing of airplanes. Many planes were manufactured for war purposes. The massive production of airplanes for the purposes of war over time overtook the demand in the market for planes. The supply of planes exceeded the market demand leading many US plane manufacturing plants to run bankrupt.
