The main hero of the novel “The Dispossessed” is Shevek. He is a young physicist who is willing to show the world his theories and discoveries. He is a resident of Anarres but it is not a place for him to show and discover his full scientific potential. Therefore, Shevek’s freedom is quite limited on his home planet.
Towards the end of the novel Shevek is trying to build that moral society is possible. His discovery and theory is being neglected on his home planet because it is viewed as the way to boost his personal ego. However, on Anarres everyone should be equal. Therefore, Shevek is special from the very beginning because he is leaving his planet and goes to Urras. When he realizes that people on Urras are not willing to share his new knowledge with everyone else and just willing to use his ideas in order to be able to control the power on Urras. He found the way to share his innovative ideas with many people all over the universe in order to enable people travel faster than the speed of life. He was not scared to go against the system and break the rules. The planets for him did not matter. Shevek cared more about the opportunities that his discoveries would open up for the others. The author states: ““You cannot buy the revolution. You cannot make the revolution. You can only be the revolution. It is in your spirit, or it is nowhere.”
(K 127). His outstanding intellectual abilities did not allow him to pretend that it is all fine.
Therefore, in conclusion it is important to state that Shevek’s character is very free and he was trying to construct a moral society by not hiding his ideas from societies. He was responsible for his actions and innovations but his goal was to stay moral.
