IT Projects
- Temporary
- Unique
- Progressive Elaboration
All projects are temporary meaning that they start and end at definite date. They are not for forever and end once the objective is achieved. These projects deliver unique product, service or deliverables and milestones. The end-product of these projects is usually utilized by the companies that benefit from it. The last characteristic is that these projects are progressive. They are started with a purpose, but with the passage of time and as the project nears completion, more benefits and the scope of the project widen and new solutions and deliverables are found and achieved (Setiawan).
IT projects are usually not physical. There benefits are also intangible. IT projects often lead to higher costs than normal projects and their true benefits are unknown until the work is fully completed. The budget in IT projects can be smaller than say civil or construction projects. These characteristics make IT projects unique (Winnora et. al).
Successful projects have a definite purpose. They are started with appropriate budget and time. These projects also rely on team work and expertise of different members of the group. The failure of project depends on inappropriate budget and time. If the budget consideration and time given is not realistic, the project will fail to achieve its targets. Also, it must be kept in mind that most of the projects fail because there is no leader or project manager in the team, hence, all good projects should have an experienced project manager.
