Angola is a country found in West Africa. During the 15th century, the Portuguese established contacts with the inhabitants of the North Western part of the country mostly the Mbundu and the Imbangala who actively engaged in slave trade. Their activities in slave trade had great impact in the Atlantic Slave Trade.
The black legend refers to an anti- Spanish propaganda which was commenced by the Italian and Protestant writers in the 16th century. It was in opposition of Spain’s brutality and aggression toward rebels in its properties both in America and Europe.
Dona Marina was an Indian American of the Aztec community. She played a key role during the conquest of Mexico by the Spanish. In the year 1519 she had been presented before Cortez among other twenty female slaves. She later turned out to be pivotal in the Mexico conquest since she knew the Aztec language and also learnt Spanish language sufficiently fast.
Cape Bajador refers to a headland found on the north coast of Sahara. The Spanish had a lot of interest in the region due to its support of fishing activities. Since 1500 Spaniard fishers, traders, whalers and hunters encamped the region up to just 1940.
While the Atlantic Slave trade continued in the 19th Century, Columbian Exchange became significant. It referred to a process where many animals, plants and diseases were shipped from one continent to another. John Eliot was a missionary and in 1637 to 1638 he took part in church and civil prosecutions of Anne Hutchinson. Canary Islands was significant in sugar cultivation and slave trade in the 1650s. Encomienda refers to an institution established by Columbians where Indians were forced to work for the Spanish Lords. Fort Caroline refers to a port constructed by Laudonniere where ships could stop in the 16th century. Grand Banks is a collection of underwater plateaus in North America. They provided rich fishing grounds for the Atlantic trade. Feitorias refers to trading posts set up by the Europeans in foreign countries which served as customs, warehouses and markets. Courier de bois refers to sovereign traders, remunerated agents of fur producing companies.
Castas is a group of lower-status persons in Latin America during colonial period that depicted combination of class, race and sexuality. Averia refers to an ad valorum levy system imposed on merchandise during the Atlantic trade. Boucaniers alludes to pirates who used to invade Spanish ships passing through the Caribbean Sea in the 17th century.
