- Give at least two different reasons why the author suggests that Americans may be anxious about the economic future. Explain the economic causes and consequences of each of these issues.
- Two different reasons causing anxiousness in Americans are unsustainable policies of the state and the shifts in demographics. Policies like the Medicare and Medicaid have begun to show signs of unsustainability with the fast increasing age of the working class and the comparatively slow growth of public economy. With foreign market influences and impending consumer debts the system relapses into slower growths of economy rendering policies for welfare as a burden on the tax payers. This may lead to abandoning of these policies. However, many citizens, especially retiring working class depend upon such policies and discontinuing them would give them a great disadvantage.
Demographics have changed for United States with white people losing a majority in population rapidly to Mexicans and Afro-Americans. The concern lies in the fact that immigrants, especially Mexicans have not raised their standards of living. This could have severe implications on the future working classes in America economically with tax payers of higher orders paying more. Lower standards would mean lower literacy rates amongst Americans. The implications of lower skills have already been seen as in an example of dismissal of 32,000 teachers in California alone since 2009.
- Explain the views of Presidential candidates Obama and Romney regarding the role of government as it affects the issues you raised in question #1. How do the two candidates differ in their approach to dealing with these issues?
- President Obama’s perspective for the people is to support larger governments. However, the credibility of Obama’s statement loses charm with the current facts. State governments have already shrunk with states governments’ dismissal of 500,000 employees since 2009. This leaves Americans uncertain to the validity of Obama’s statement of better governance and job opportunities at federal level, because implications show that the federal government may follow suit to state government dismissals. His approach lies in the fact that the people requirements for jobs to pay their debts off. But the success of this promise seems bleak when the present scenario is brought under consideration.
Mitt Romney targets social and welfare policies on the other hand, saying that such policies as Medicare and Medicaid would become vouchers for the working class below retirement age and would shrink, restrictions would be lifted from finance industries etc. Romney’s approach is aimed at targeting the demand for change in policies that are proving useless or even harmful for US citizens. The two approaches are stark in difference, while one addresses one issue, the other concentrates on a different issue altogether. Both issues are inter-related and neither of these views provides a concrete solution to the anxiety of Americans.
