A Quality System or Quality Management System (QMS) can be defined as a combination of the processes, procedures, people, organization, documents and actions to attain quality management. Quality systems are the base for the countries to be competitive in the global economy. Quality system detects the status of purchased and supplied materials, ensures the finished goods are developed, and carried out efficiently. QMS minimizes the product recalls, and reduces the faulty products. ISO 9000 is the widely implemented quality system.
Quality Manual is an official document that explains the quality systems and operating procedure of quality systems. The manual can vary according to the nature of the company and there are no set standards on the format of the manual. The quality manual includes the policies and goals of the company, and a comprehensive explanation of the company’s quality control system. The manual serves as a benchmark for the companies to produce and deliver quality goods and services. Depending on the regular audits the manual is updated regularly.
Quality circles encourage the employees to engage themselves to develop the skills, creativity, and also build confidence. Quality circles are the local groups of employees working towards improving the processes under an experienced supervisor or a team leader. The members in the quality circles recognize, investigate, and provide solutions to the issues that arise in work. These solutions are forwarded to the higher management for review in order to help the organization achieve its goals.
A few challenges in quality systems are to evaluate the actual business needs and develop an implementation plan, identifying the resource requirements to execute the plan, lack of support and participation from the management, precautionary maintenance schedules, absence of creativity and innovation from employees, and shortage of internal audits.
