Analyzing Parent-Child Attachment Through Observation Essay Samples

I am a specialist in early childhood development, and I visited a colleague in her offices. She is a pediatric consultant, and we were seated in the waiting room. The waiting room had three people, and one of them was a young mother with her two-year-old girl and supposedly her nanny. The waiting room is colorful and has friendly objects that children can use to play. A television set is also available and with the kids’ songs playing. The child has been brought for a general check-up, and her weight is somehow below average.
I sat there for more than twenty minutes observing the relationship between the mother and the child. During that time, I observed a lot of interactions between the young mother and her baby girl. There was an instance where the child was playing with the friendly objects, and she accidentally tripped on one and fell. The child cried immediately, and the mother ran towards her baby and held her as she tried to soothe her by calling her beautiful names. The mother is happy when her baby stops crying, and she puts her back on the floor to continue playing as she keeps an eye on her. The baby then cries out of no reason, and the mother asks the supposed nanny to feed the baby. The baby still cries and refuses to feed. This makes the mother wear a worried look as she asks kid what was wrong. The child goes to her mother to seek comfort, but continues crying. There was an instance where she wanted one toy on the ground, and she cried that the supposed nanny should get it for her. The baby also kicked and threw stuff in the air, and the mother threatened to spank her.
The baby was quiet and then continued playing, and the young mother would call her baby with different affectionate names while making funny faces. The child would look at her mom and respond by laughing heartily. The child would however not look at her mother while playing unless she called her out using sweet names. The mother showed concern when the baby was not looking at her, and she felt uncomfortable. She kept on calling the baby out to look at her as she made funny faces. The baby would laugh and run and hug the mother and kissed her severally.
In the category of cues reading, the positive responses showed by the mother and child was when the mother tried to comfort the baby by using sweet words, and the baby responded positively. The baby also ran to the mother when she was upset, and the mother showed sensitivity to the baby’s crying. However, the concerning bit was when the baby continued crying and the mother seemed worried and asked the nanny to give her food. The baby also threw unnecessary tantrums and showed demands. In the affection category, the mother and child were affectionate, and the mother showed interest in what the baby was doing. However, the concerning part was where the baby threw heavy tantrums, and the mother threatened to spank her. Another positive part of the gaze, facial expression, reciprocity, vocalizations and physical contact were positive. The mother followed what the child was doing, and the child would laugh at the funny facial expressions made by the mother and the sweet names called by the mother. The baby also hugged and kissed her mother when she made her laugh. The concerning art was when the mother felt uncomfortable when her baby did not look at her. She would call out to her girl to look at her as she made the funny faces.
