Andrea Yates was married to Rusty and the two were dedicated Christians. Andrea underwent post partum misery that was provoked by her previously existing psychological imbalance and restricted living environment. After a while, Yates’ condition started to deteriorate as she rejected medication and feeding the children hence this exhibited symbol of a mad woman (Roche 3). June 2001 is well recalled following her actions of forcibly drowning children. She was found guilty of capital murder after which she was sent to jail.
After being questioned of her killings, she declared that she was a “bad mother” who deserved being ‘punished’. Yates’ argued she thought the children were not performing in a manner that Jesus would find sympathetic (Montaldo 1). In her trial, Park Dietz the psychiatrist claimed Yates’ was not mentally sick, but had skillfully arranged her children’s murder following an incident of “law and order” where a lady drowned her kids although she was found not accountable by cause of madness (Ramsland 1). She was given a re-trial in the year 2006 which found her not responsible by the cause of madness and thereby moved from jail to a mental hospital for prescription.
The Mental Health Association director declared that the judgment portrayed impartiality to a lady whose harsh cerebral sickness was never in subject (McNamara 1). However, Dietz’s false testimony was never shown for lying under oath. Yates’ case can be looked in different perspectives. Injustice is shown through the psychiatrist who swore falsely. It is evident that the killings occurred following her existing ill health (Walsh 1). It would be better if Yates’ health was examined before going to the courts in order to avoid controversy and confusion. Judgment should be given after in depth examination and investigation of the wrongdoer in order to grant fair trial and thus avoid injustice by all means.
