Gender and Sexuality are not equivalent. Nor should one imply the other. These two aspects are the biggest, if not singular ideas that I intend to remind myself. I wouldn’t call this a personal problem as much as it is a social issue. As a society prefers, I am conditioned to see one thing and accept the easiest and most uncomplicated possibility. Girls like boys. Boys like girls. There are only Girls. There are only Boys. But thinking this way leaves a lot of people out, a lot of people scared, and a lot of people feeling invalid.
I was misinformed about Sexuality. I thought there were two-and-half options. That everyone was Straight, unless you were Gay. That’s it. And it excluded women of being naturally, unquestionably, soberly “Gay”. And it would be cop-out to show favor or preference for both male and female organs—which I hadn’t even considered until the television told me so. But what about people who prefer Neither? and genuinely have no interest anyone else? There are also the lot who prefer “everyone” and that certainly opens up what “everyone” could be.
What I learned about Gender is that boys and girls are just a concept. Even worse, it’s rather single-minded and lifeless concept. This is because some of us may not have been be born the gender we are today; some of may change it the gender we were born with; some of us may surgically add-on, or permanently suppress, or temporarily adapt for a situation. On a more intangible level, there is the possibility of not believing in such binary terms. I love the idea of there being a spectrum instead of scale to talk about what we consider our self as. I find it more than empowering to feel in control, feel consciously decided that what we are is what we pick and choose. It’s a subconscious feeling that can encompass years. It is a tragedy that the lifestyles of our humanness dissociate how different we can develop and evolve, as well as be triggered, or perceived.
As one would fear, when becoming better-informed in the possibilities of Gender and Sexuality, depending on the culture, it crumbles a lot of brittle concepts we’ve kept for quite a while. Personally, I think it makes the variety of humanness a lot fuller. To speak of our defaults, actions, and choices as lifestyles is not to be meant as superficial label. But it should certainty get us annoyed enough to talk about how our bodies do not equal our interests.
