The article by Suna Senman the link of which I provided below discusses about a law passed in Israel in order to curb the rage of anorexia in women trying to enter glamor industry. The growing trend of abnormally self-starving among women has resulted in the untimely death of a number of fashion models with many still fighting the disease tooth and nail. The article highlights how the show business world projects anorexic models as an ideal image of a beautiful woman due to which many young girls start believing that one needs to be thin to look pretty. One such girl is Keti whose anorexic condition makes an Israeli fashion photographer Adi Barkan realize about the detrimental effect people of his profession are leaving on young minds by showcasing ultra-thin women as icons of beauty. His realization leads him to break ranks with the tide of fashion industry and his initiatives end up with the passing of a law that prohibits models with BMI below 18.5 from working.
The article in discussion has helped me realize the gravity of Anorexia nervosa which is an eating disorder marked by abnormal eating habit developed due to irrational fear of gaining weight, self-inflicted notion of being fat and obsession with thinness. People suffering from anorexia try to reduce weight by excessive dieting or exercise, deliberately misusing laxatives, self-induced vomiting and enemas. The factors triggering anorexia are an amalgam of biological, psychological and social reasons. The culture of associating beauty and sexual desirability with thinness has been created by media. Unless some strict laws are enforced to redefine the parameters of the glamor industry that puts huge pressure on women involved in the profession to stay thin, young impressionable minds would continue to get brainwashed by the idea that thinness is beauty and would nurture the practice of self-starvation in pursuit of that beauty.
