Anticipating My Nurse Practitioner Career
As I reflect on my future as a nurse practitioner, I envision applying my knowledge and skills to help those that do not have access to quality healthcare. My chief objective is to improve the life of each individual I treat in some way. Specializing as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), my work will begin in an area of the United States that has a shortage of qualified candidates and a high incidence of health-related problems. Hence, my initial efforts will be made in community health centers and/or hospitals in underserved, urban areas, helping families understand the importance of making healthy choices and disease prevention. In this case, my primary barrier immediately after graduation is relocating and adjusting to a new city and way of life.
As I gain valuable experience as an employee, I will begin preparing for missionary nurse work with Doctors Without Borders, an organization that places FNP’s around the world “where it is needed most” (DWB, 2016). This organization has very specific participation requirements, which are the primary barrier to entering this field. The requirements I need to fulfill before joining this organization are:
Minimum of three (3) years of experience,
Minimum of one (1) year of management experience,
Specialized training in infectious disease, public health, or tropical medicine, and
Specialized experience in a designated area of expertise.
This course marks the beginning of an exciting and fulfilling journey. Initially, the course will facilitate the transition into my FNP career by providing the framework of knowledge and skills I require to become a certified and licensed nurse practitioner, including an advanced nursing degree. This program will also help me develop the leadership skills needed to be successful in the medical industry, both in the United States and abroad.
