FBI’s View
Apple was requested by a Federal Court to assist the FBI to unlock an iPhone, which one the terrorist who killed individuals in San Bernardino had used (Isaac par.1). According to the FBI, the unlocking of this iPhone was in the best interest of the Americans. The aim of the FBI in requesting Apple unlock this phone was to ensure that the Americans are safe. The FBI viewed Apple’s resistance as a self-centered act of putting profits over the safety of the citizens. The FBI maintained that their request was a sensible request since it was all about fighting the terrorists and protecting millions of Americans. However, the FBI succeeded in unlocking the iPhone without the help of Apple (Selyukh par. 1). The FBI could not push Apple to unlock the [phone because this constituted hacking, which is against the law.
Apple’s View
Apple was required to create a new version of software, which would allow the FBI bypass certain restrictions (Isaac par.4). According to Apple, this constituted an infringement of the privacy of the customer. Apple viewed the request in a bad way. The company maintained that doing what the FBI wanted them to do would undermine its product features. Apple claimed that doing this would essentially require providing the FBI with the backdoor access to the iPhones (Crovitz par. 2). It also maintained that accepting the request would make the FBI access the phones of millions of its customers whenever they want. In fact, Apple’s Chief Executive believed that nothing would stop the FBI from accessing the phones of others if it could access this iPhone (Kharpal par. 5). Consequently, Apple perceived the request as an infringement of the privacy of its customers.
