The debate on abortion is one of the most controversial topics in American culture. Abortion, as defined in the dictionary, is the termination of the fetus or unborn child in the mother’s womb. In 1973, the US Supreme Court legalized abortion and made available to all women wherein legal abortions are allowed up until the sixteenth week of pregnancy. The debate continues to soar in the last few decades and has been tagged as “Women’s Right to Choose” which means every woman has the right to make her own choice. For a number of reasons such as rape, incest, teenage pregnancy or health risks, women would resort to abortion. On a personal level, I strongly support abortion because I believe that no one has the right to force a woman to give birth against her will or bear an unwanted child.
Women who have been raped or a victim of incest has the right to have an abortion because keeping their babies would remind them of the horrible pain which would eventually make them hate their children. Teenage pregnancy is hard to deal with knowing that young girls are not ready or mature enough to take so much responsibility. Since they cannot provide a good life for their children, abortion would be the right option than raising miserable and emotionally disturbed children.
Health is also a major factor. A pregnant woman with a congenital heart disease would put her and her baby at high risk of death. A report from Medical News Today (2006) written by Michael Gatzoulis, professor of cardiology and adult congenital heart disease at Royal Brompton Hospital in London states that, “Women with congenital heart disease are 100 times as likely to die during pregnancy as women who do not have the condition”. On the other hand, pregnant women with diabetes are more likely to give birth to a child with multiple defects. According to Arthur Schoenstadt, MD (Nov 6, 2008), uncontrolled blood sugar during pregnancy could lead to a miscarriage, preterm labor or birth defects. Choices are either to save the mother and let the baby die or let her die and save the baby. In this case, women would rather choose abortion which I believe is more sensible.
Anyone would feel that aborting an unborn child is cruel and inhuman. Every woman loves having a child. Pregnancy is one of the most exciting times in a woman’s life. But if their pregnancy could lead to a sudden death or could affect the babies’ health, then there is no point in continuing it. The mother has the right to decide what she wants to do with her unborn child. Since it involves her own body, a woman should have the right to choose what is in the best interest for her and her unborn child.
Pro life supporters argued on the basis of morality and religion. Their “Thou shalt not kill” campaign was directed towards the destruction of a fetus. To their belief, a fetus is a human being that has the right to live and ending its life means murder which is a crime. I don’t believe that a fetus or embryo is a human being. A fetus is related to the mother and is dependent on her in order for it to grow. A human being is a state of being born so a fetus becomes a human being the moment it is born. Therefore, an unborn fetus doesn’t have the legal right to live and can be terminated at anytime.
The freedom to choose is a constitutional right that should be free from any religious and political interference. Every woman has the right to make any decision that involves her reproductive system which should be treated with respect by our government. “Life is a matter of choices” and her future lies on the choices she makes.
